The Melodious Funk

Sun 4 Nov – State Radio, The Beautiful Girls

I first heard The Beautiful Girls when I downloaded Controlled Substance from the now defunct OINK.

Myspace let me know that they were coming to town but failed to mention an opening band. It was difficult finding tickets but after several phone calls there was success.

The show was on a Sunday night so I was glad The Beautiful Girls were the opening act. The lights went dim almost promptly at 8:30. Mat McHugh on vocals and guitar with Paulie B on bass and Bruce Braybrooke drummin' walked threw the wooden doors of The Rhythm Room to an appreciative crowd.

Right away Mat brought us into the melodic funk of Black Bird. Those in the room who were there for the headliner perked up and started to sway with the music.

Song after song the anticipation grew inside me as I knew they were aware of what songs we had come to hear. First came Thoughts of You with a groove and punch that screams radio hit. Only to be followed by Sir, Your Fashion Has The Cold Heart Of A Killer which sounds remarkably like early The Police sound. The set seemed to short but we were promised a headline show which would be fantastic.

After buying a CD and T-Shirt to support the band we were pleasantly surprised by the headliners State Radio.

We did not stay for the whole set as it was a work night( I hate getting old ). But after hearing CIA and Gang of Thieves I will definitely be keeping an eye on their progress. Viva Le Funk!!!!
