Song of the Day: Archive I

For more recent Song of the Day selections, check my profile. Assuming I actually manage to keep this updated (not likely), I'd like to make the archives a monthly thing.

3 Aprilis 2760
I very strongly considered making the return to updates today, but it was my birthday two days ago and I got Killer 7 for GameCube, so I'm going to play that. However, I will offer a preview of what you can expect in the very near future by letting you in on the CDs I got for the b-day:
"Kicking Bird: Music From the Motion Picture" (It won't let me enter this as an album because I'm probably the only person on Last.fm who's heard of this.)
Two burned CDs (Various artists; these can't be entered as albums either because hey aren't. If you actual care about what music I'm listening to and were looking for a legitimate preview of future Songs of the Day, my apologies)
Oh, Inverted World
"The Best of the Crack" - The Crack (You also don't know this music, but you should, because it is amazing. I don't actually have it yet - it's in the mail and I'm going to have a hard time not typing long, boring posts once this one arrives. I've been trying to track something down by this band for years, and now it's finally on its way)

Oh, if you're reading this (Ha! I made a funny!) and you were in any way involved with my attainment of the above objects, many thanks! Now I'm going to look for invisible bad guys so I can shoot their heads off. Video games are the best!

I'm really busy lately. SoTD will return when I'm less busy. I hope you survive the brief recess.

Lonely Day

I read recently that Daron Malakian never intended for this song to be for System of a Down, and it is apparent. The song sounds nothing like what you've heard from System of a Down before, and it is truly a testament to the amazing power of this band. If anyone else had written this song, I'm really not sure I would like it. By any other band, I dare say it could be disposable radio music, but as it is, it's something lovely. The biggest criticism I've heard regarding the song is toward its lyrics. The song opens with, "Such a lonely day / and it's mine / the most lonliest day of my life / Such a lonely day / should be banned / it's a day that I can't stand." I'm a mega-System of a Down fan, but as hard as it is for me to do so, I will admit that in print, it doesn't look too good. However, the incredible emotion that goes into the singing and instument-playing launches this song into the realm of greatness.
I was having quite a bit of trouble figuring out what today's song would be (I'll explain the process eventually), but after discovering that the music video for this song premired today, their was no contest. As with far too many videos, it's a tad repetitive, but that doesn't stop it from being totally rad. But don't take my word for it! Watch it!

Lemme break this down for ya - I don't really feel like writing one of these right now, but I know that if I put it off any longer, it won't get done. (Right now, this is the song of the yesterday, 'cause I didn't have time on the actual day that this was the Song of the Day to write it.) Regardless, with songs like JuicyJuice and Last Nite playing pretty frequently in my head, I'm sure it won't be long until I get another opportunity to write about these delightful fellows. Anyway, this song rocks, I enjoy playing it with the setting on my keyboard which I believe is called "Synth 3," because then it sounds like music that belongs in an old video game, and I can't find where I downloaded it. This also happened with Monster Hospital. I swear I got these legitimately someplace. I'm opposed to stealing from the musicians I like, and I have no reason to steal from musicians I don't like. Oh, well. You're getting stuck with Last Nite. Sorry: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/stores/artist/-/digital-music/218858/ref=pm_dp_ln_j_2/102-5064648-1692946

Colt 45

Today's song is nothing more than typical comedic gross-out rap. Although I never made the connection between the two songs until I started writing this, it came as no surprise that this is by the same guy who brought us Because I Got High. It's dumb, it's overtop, and it's fun. Really, how many dirty rap songs do you know that work this well as sing-alongs?

Spiderwebs

No Doubt was a huge disappointment of a band. There was so much talent! They should've been the next Blondie! In fact, Spiderwebs was, according to The Singles 1992-2003, inspired by The Tide is High, as well as Bob Marley. Of course, being inspired by good music is certainly not enough. No Doubt, as previously mentioned, seemed to have the talent to back this up, though. Listen to the instruments in almost any of their songs - there is some really fantastic stuff. Gwen Stefani surely has the vocal talent that was present in Blondie, and her solo work shows that she can display some sort of attitude. I remember wandering around a music store and hearing Hollaback Girl before it had become a hit. I can't say for sure that I'd have the same affinity for the song had I only heard it after it exploded as it did, but under the circumstances of the real world, I think it is a darn catchy tune.

Anyway, back to whatever stuff I was writing about. Spiderwebs: it's not bad, and it's definitely one of the best No Doubt songs I've heard, but like all of their music, it's lacking something I haven't yet identified, so it gets a big, fat, sideways thumb. If you have any idea what's lacking, please let me know.

Monster Hospital

I'm very upset by how little music I know by Metric, 'cause if this is any indication, it is very important that I hear more. Great vocals, great music, wild shifts, and the chorus offers a lovely nod to I Fought the Law, with "I fought the war, but the war won!" I also very much dig the opening "Bam-chicka-bam-chicka-boom-boom-boom", or whatever it is. Check it out here: http://www.mp3.com/albums/20066315/summary.html
I can't find where I got the mp3, so you'll be watching the video, which is okay with you, because the video's not bad. It's not amazing, but it's not bad. Except the stuff with the electrical outlet. That is totally bad, but in the way old way, where "bad" means it's good.

Wow, how odd. Nothing really stuck out to me today.

Little Room

I guess there is a certain mainstream acceptability to songs like Fell in Love With a Girl and Seven Nation Army, but singles aside, I really don't understand the popularity of The White Stripes. I love them greatly, but I just can't imagine many people getting into something like today's SotD. It's just so weird, and it's a perfect example of one of the most bizarrly endearing traits of the band - they have no talent. Maybe that's not exactly the best way of putting it. They are quite good at providing highly entertaining music, yet unlike so many bands, they're clearly not trying to impress me. I'm not much a guitarist. I play, but when I say "play," I mean it in the same sense as I would if I were to tell you I play with Legos. However, I can play many of their songs simply because the songs aren't about how many hand-breaking chords can be thrown into a small amount of time, it's about making likeable music. Little Room features an incredibly simple beat and out of tune vocals, is less than a minute long, and is on White Blood Cells, an album which has sold over 900,000 copies. I just don't get it.
I do like it, though.

Note: I don't like the way this reads with the artist proceeding each song title, but I do like the link on each song, so you're just going to have to deal with this being a tad funky and disjointed.
