After a lot of searching, I was able to find the interview in which Turla talks about taking voice lessons: "Well, basically, I took voice lessons 2004, and I had been trying to sing all high, because I didn’t know how to sing. We started this band when we were like, eighteen, nineteen years old. And part of it was, I didn’t think your voice really changed from eighteen to twenty-eight. But it does, and I’ve noticed how it’s changed. I listen to my voice on past recordings, and I wonder, “How did I even do that?” And I can’t even sing the higher notes that I could sing back then. So, when I took voice lessons, they were like, “Why are you trying to sing high? You’re supposed to sing low.” I've seen them in concert and Turla hits those low notes like a dream now, not as much high stuff anymore. Here is the interview if you want to read more :) http://inflatableferret.com/interviews/interview-murder-by-death/

In response to your question on the Murder by Death page: Yes, it is Turla. He went to a vocal coach for Red of Tooth and Claw and was told he had been singing too high. So for their older stuff, he is more of a tenor. Newer stuff, more of a bass.
