• Bon Jovi Hits The Big 1000!

    11 Jul 2006, 9:14

Yay! So now that I have 1000 plays of Bon Jovi (300 of which were in one week) I feel the need to explain why I suddenly listen to Bon Jovi, more Bon Jovi and nothing but Bon Jovi.

Since the 10th of June, I am no longer a concert virgin! I was at Milton Keynes, Saturday, 10th of June in the baking hot sunshine enjoying Bon Jovi like they're meant to be enjoyed, loud and live! We all know thats the environment Bon Jovi are made for, you can sing along, punch your fists in the air and try to shout louder than everyone around you.

Anyways, I hadn't heard much of Bon Jovi before that, just Crossroad: The Best of Bon Jovi and This Left Feels Right. Apparently, those two albums were enough for me to have a helluva time and I came back and got lots of Bon Jovi albums as soon as I got back. Unfortunately, they're just downloads right now, but as soon as I have some money in hand, I'll buy them :) Anyway, here they are in order of preference. I didnt include the compilation albums, just the studio albums.

    1. New Jersey - This has got to be Bon Jovi's finest album. Fantastic songs such as EscucharBorn To Be My Baby, EscucharLiving In Sin and my personal favourite, EscucharBlood On Blood. Many more great songs on there, and definitely worth buying.

    2. These Days - This is Bon Jovi at their best lyrically. The songs are all fantastic and really, there isnt much between this and New Jersey. One of the few moody, dark Bon Jovi albums with slow ballads like Bitter Wine and EscucharMy Guitar Lies Bleeding In My Arms and brilliant songs like this aint a love song and EscucharHearts Breaking Even.

    3. Crush - This was Bon Jovi's comeback album, with a fresh new poppy sound (although you wouldnt know it from songs like EscucharIt's My Life) they dominated the charts once again. This album has a very happy feel with songs such as EscucharNext 100 Years and EscucharCaptain Crash & The Beauty Queen From Mars but theres also some harder rockin gems like EscucharOne Wild Night which I love.

    4. Keep The Faith - This has some of Bon Jovi's greatest hits as well as some of their most underrated songs ever. EscucharIn These Arms, EscucharKeep The Faith and EscucharBed Of Roses are all songs that are definitely worthy of their fame but there are some songs that are tragically overlooked like EscucharDry County which may just have the greatest solo in a Bon Jovi song, ever.

    5. Slippery When Wet - Its a very close call between this and Have A Nice Day, the only reason I chose this being that I haven't heard HAND enough to really form a proper opinion of it. Anyway, SWW was Bon Jovi's breakthrough album, and its easy to see why when you have one of their most famous songs EscucharLivin' On A Prayer on it. Add concert staples like EscucharYou Give Love A Bad Name and EscucharWanted Dead Or Alive and you have one brilliant album.

To be honest, all these albums as well as the ones that didnt make the list (Bounce, Bon Jovi) are all albums more than worthy of being bought, its easy to see why Bon Jovi is still a brilliant band today with sold out concerts and chart topping albums. The only reason I completely evaded the subject of 7800 Fahrenheit is because I haven't heard it yet, but I'm sure I'll check it out soon enough =P

Anyway, as I've rambled on for far longer than necessary, I think I'll finish now.

Btw, was anyone there at the MK gig on the 10th of June?
  • I Believe In A Thing Called Love!

    17 Mar 2006, 21:01

The Darkness are arguably one of the best Rock bands out today. Screw all that sad, teenage angst and my girlfriend left me shit, this is the real deal folks. These guys are reminding the world that Rock is about stickin it to the man and having some fun while you do it and I think theyre gettin some major hate because of it!

The first time I heard I Believe In A Thing Called Love, I dismissed them as a mick take, or a one hit wonder. True I loved the song, but wasnt it all a bit tongue in cheek? A bit like they were taking the mick out the old glory days of Glam Rock of Guns N' Roses and Poison and David Bowie? Well heres a shocker. Theyre not!

I think The Darkness are seriously trying to revive classic rock and you know what? Good on them! You haters have no reason to hate them! They make quality music. One Way Ticket To Hell...And Back is brilliant and so is Permission to Land. Brilliant songs, mind blowing vocals and solid guitar playing. Yay for some real music again! So what if theyre still caught up in the 80's? It makes a very nice difference from all those baggy jeans and stylish shirts or girl bands with tight jeans and dance videos with nearly naked women. These guys are bringing back music as it should be and I hope you can join me in applauding them!

To The Darkness, spreading the light of Classic Rock and dispelling the musical darkness!
  • A day once dawned, And it was beautiful...

    5 Mar 2006, 18:12

I discovered Nick Drake recently, about a couple of months ago. I heard someone compliment his simple but emotional style and I decided to check him out. I got Pink Moon and was immediately floored by not only his heartbreaking songwriting, but his breathy voice. Why didn't anyone tell me about him before? Why doesn't the world give him the attention due? Why did he have to die and leave just 3 albums behind?

Pink Moon was a gentle eye-opener for me to Nick's style. The ethereal voice, the gentle strumming and the the spirit of depression was all that was needed to get me raving about him. I played the album non stop for hours. It might be short, but wow, it packs a punch.

Nick Drake deserves every bit of attention he gets and it eludes me as to why he didn't get it when he was still alive? Maybe we would have more of his music to lose ourselves in had he been recognised for the genius he was.

Has anyone ever been as good as him at emotionally knocking out his listeners? I'm listening to Made To Love Magic as I type this and I dont think anyone ever has. As soon as I wore out his albums, I was immediately on the hunt for more like it, but unfortunately no one has ever been able to come close, never mind match him. If you know of any you think I might like, please do let me know.

His music has inspired many and I think it will continue to do so. I dont think its ever gonna age a single year. I picked up Pink Moon not knowing when it was released and when I found it was released in 1972, I was amazed. His music does not age and if it does so in the future, I think its gonna age beautifully.

If you havent already listened to Drake, I suggest you go out and buy Pink Moon. Totally heart wrenching, but leaving the last uplifting EscucharFrom the Morning as a prophetic tribute to Drake.

    "And now we rise
    And we are everywhere
And now we rise from the ground"

Maybe there are more and more of us rising to Drake's melancholy music every day.

    I sure hope so.
  • Yet another one of those "Top 5" artists lists...

    16 Feb 2006, 11:02

Maybe you've read my top 5 bands, maybe you havent, to be honest it doesnt matter. This is my top 5 artists sure, they play with bands, but they are known by their name.

    1. Nick Drake. I discovered Nick Drake only recently and subsequently, I now own Pink Moon and Way To Blue. Pink Moon is simply one of the most beautiful albums I have ever heard.Maybe its the myth around the album, maybe its because its the sound of Drake falling apart or maybe its because it was recorded over two nights. Whatever it is, Im grateful. Drake's wildly complicated chords and heavenly fingerpicking and extravangant strumming combined with his harrowing lyrics complimented by his otherworldy voice is perfect. Please for your own sake buy Pink Moon ASAP.

    2. Buckethead. Its a pity that most people know him for his wierd (at best) stage persona than for his music. He is considered a joke by many, but listen to his music before dismissing him.His style is impressive, ranging from lightning fast solos ala Binge And Grab to semi-acoustic melodic beauties such as EscucharFor Mom and EscucharMachete. His background is the subject of many websites, and even if it is all a marketing gimmick, its still a fun read. His best album is Colma even if it doesnt show off his spectacular speed.

3.Johnny Cash. I know what you're thinking, "Here we go, another guy who thinks hes Cash's greatest fan just because he watched the damn film" and you would be right to a certain extent.I did only start listening to Cash because of the film, but I am so thankful that I did. The Man In Black's charisma is powerful, At Folsom Prison is a showcase of his attractuve stage persona, and a very very good live album. Songs such as EscucharA Boy Named Sue are still as good as they were back then and The Essential Johnny Cash really is an essential buy.

4.Roger Waters. Even though I do blame him for Pink Floyd breaking up, his solo albums are well worth a look. Amused to Death is definitely his best album so far with very good songs such as EscucharToo Much Rope and EscucharThe Bravery of Being Out of Range, Waters deserves atleast a download (legal ofcourse) and if you are so inclined, you should buy Flickering Flame (His best of album) as a starter pack so to speak.

5.Damien Rice. I doubt if anyone outside the UK have heard of this guy, but he definitely does deserve to be more well known. Simple acoustic songs, personal lyrics and a haunting voice. Only released one album so farO but it is a very good album. Check him out or atleast get some songs. I recommend Cheers Darlin', I Remember and the overplayed Blower's Daughter.

Those are all definitely very good artists, and I hope that I have (as I promised in my best bands journal) bored you to hell. My next journal I hope to be vaguely entertaining, so watch this space. Till then, farewell
  • I dont care if everyone has one, this is MY top 5 bands

    13 Feb 2006, 10:53

So what if nearly every single person already has one of these? You got a better idea for a journal buddy boy? No? Well shush and read.

    1. My favourite band of all time...Guns N' Roses. They were the ones who reeled me into music with that strangely calm EscucharNovember Rain and then slapped in the face with Rock Anthems like EscucharSweet Child O' Mine and EscucharParadise City. Kudos to you GNR, you guys rocked this world like no other. Now lets have a moments silence for the terrible state Axl is trying to recreate you in.

    2. Pink Floyd. No sane person can deny these guys are pretty much the definition of flawless Progressive Rock. From Arnold Layne to Time, theyve consistenly blown me away. They've written some of the best music ever (Shine on You Crazy Diamond anyone?)and I hope they will continue to do so.Only with Waters back with them.

    3. U2. Again, these guys are masters of song writing, whether it be simple tunes like Sweetest Thing or meaningful masterpieces like EscucharI Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For, their songs are simply classics. Go pick up The Joshua Tree if you dont have it already. Like right now I mean, forget this list and go get it.

    4. Eagles.Ah the soothing sound of the Eagles. They might not be amazingly brilliant at what they played but the genuine calm country sound is so good to relax to. From EscucharHotel California to EscucharBest of My Love, they transcend genre, they were the kings of Themed Songwriting and EscucharHotel California is still one of the most debated songs ever.

    5. Dire Straits. As they sing, "This aint what they call rock and roll" they sum themselves up perfectly. They are the Sultans Of Swing and they broke the barriers of Rock and made their music their own. They're considered a bit naff but you just forget that as soon as you listen to Tunnel of Love or Romeo And Juliet and just revel in it. Also, pick up Alchemy it really is a great live album (This is from someone who HATES live songs)

Well I hope you enjoyed reading that, I shall return with another blog soon enough to relieve my boredom and re-establish yours. Till then, Rock on.
