Mon 3 Mar – The Opiates, Billie Ray Martin
There is a review of the gig in today's Metro. Highlights of the article include:
"Sporting a New Romantic quiff, Billie appears in a black tunic with take-your-eyes-out shoulder pads. The look may be Sheena Easton dressed for a funeral circa 1982, but the sound is catchy industrial post-punk disco that owes more to Gary Numan and Yazoo, crossed with an early Prince 45… played at 33rpm."
and my own favourite paragraph:
"Who could fail to warm to lyrics such as 'Her lips are injected with half her ass, so now she looks like Pete Burns'? Certainly not a gaggle of giggly gay guys up front. Suggestively grinding their pelvises as their idol works Rough Trade's stage, the shaven-headed clones look like they'd be up for a bit of the same with any old Billy, Ray or Martin."
(Yes, I was at the front…)
