I've put a friend request in because I really liked your comments on the El-P page and your chessey grin and thumbs up combo. Also, I'm looking for hip hop recommendations.

Hmm - this says we've got super compatibility, but I recognise hardly anything you listen to!

Just saw your comment on the fugazi page re: the live recordings - couldn't agree more. I don't know why I slept on them for so long, but I just picked up El Paso, TX 93 (where I grew up), and Helsinki 2000. Any recs for other shows worth picking up? also, "Your musical compatibility with substancex is Super". great job!

And no problem, I love getting recommendations! I'll be honest, I don't always manage to listen to everything in a timely or orderly manner, but I enjoy expanding my taste and learning about different sounds.

Thanks, I'll check them out soon. It sounds like you have a deep knowledge of this scene - have you been listening to "no wave" music for a very long time already? The first time I heard of "no wave" was actually just last year (the same year that I discovered Swans).

I forgot to mention -- I did enjoy "Hey Joni", though the version that I downloaded was the live version, which may be different from other versions they put out.

I like groups that focus on the music itself, because that stuff is what interests me much more than the vocals/lyrics. That's why I like instrumental music a lot. I've been digging around on Wikipedia a bit and I noticed that Sonic Youth has an album where they collaborated with Merzbow - that sounds really intriguing. Anyway, thanks for the recommendations, I plan to keep listening! I can't promise that I'll be converted to being a true fan of Sonic Youth, but you've definitely gotten me curious about the other stuff they put out. Not having previously listened to any of their work, I was indeed expecting another indie rock group similar to The Shins or The Arcade Fire. I have no idea why I had that in my mind, but I just did!

When you first posted, I listened to "The Wonder" and for some reason didn't like it that much. But after you mentioned Swans I started getting a little more excited and re-listened to the song, listening purely to the instrumentation, and I started liking it a bit more. Now I've listened to Confusion Sex -- it does indeed remind me of Swans but it's a weird "transitional phase". Like, to me, it's lighter than their material from the early 80s like Filth, but it's still a lot more noisy and dissonant than their 90s stuff like The Great Annihilator. And I had no idea that there was any connection between this group and Swans!

I'm excited, I'm going to check out those tracks later tonight. I actually just remembered when I first heard of Sonic Youth - there's a video by the "barelypolitical" YouTube channel called "How to seduce a hipster", and "Sonic Youth - Teen Age Riot" is given as an example of a "hipster" track, hehe.

Hmm, with those criteria I have trouble coming up with recommendations (though being new to Zappa, there may just be stuff I don't know about). "Discordant" makes me think of Lumpy Gravy and Civilization: Phaze III, but those aren't really punk/noise/guitar-oriented albums. I'm honestly surprised that I'm 24 and I only heard about Zappa within the past year from reading TVTropes. Like, my mom's a big fan of 60s and 70s music, so she used to put on a lot of Beatles, Moody Blues, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Pink Floyd, but no Zappa! As for Sonic Youth, that's a name I've heard many times but I've never listened to any of their music. Any recommendations on where to start?

No worries, everyone's entitled to their opinion and you're not an asshole for having an opinion. I got into Frank Zappa pretty recently and as you can see from my charts, he's one of my favorite musicians. At the same time, though, I like hearing differing opinions about him and I'd be interested in knowing what songs/albums you've listened to so far and why they didn't appeal to you. I won't send you song recommendations if you're not interested in them - I'm just interested in hearing your thoughts. :-)
