Best albums of 2010

Disclaimer: I kind of fail at ‘Best of X Year’’ lists, mainly because I have zero memory for what album comes out when (Enemy Of The World came out in 2010? xx came out in 2009? WTF?). Just thought I’d put that out there before I begin.

1. Danger Days: True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys - My Chemical Romance
Okay, okay. If you’re looking for a list without bias, look elsewhere. Please. Yes, My Chemical Romance could have released 53 minutes and 56 seconds of silence and I’d probably still have rated it highly (well, probably not, but you get the idea), but what they put out instead is really fucking awesome. I think there’s always a worry with bands that you consider your favourites that they’re going to fuck up. Especially since the last time they released an album was 2006, when I was a very different person with very different musical tastes. But Danger Days is fucking awesome (wait, I’ve already said that.) I don’t even really know where to start. Vampire Money is my song of the year. Fucking Na Na Na (Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na) getting stuck in my head all autumn. Party Poison. Save Yourself, I’ll Hold Them Back. I’ve always been adamant that any good album must have a WTF moment. Danger Days has two: Planetary (GO!) and S/C/A/R/E/C/R/O/W, coincidentally another two of my favourite songs on the album. And have I mentioned what may possibly be the best thing about this album, the The Mad Gear and Missile Kid EP? OMG we finally get to hear Black Dragon Fighting Society. And the twitter mindfuck. How many hours did I spend on that? Some albums just seem to define a certain period of your life. This is one of them for me.
If I sound like a fangirl yet, it’s because I absolutely, unapologeticallly am.

2. Invented - Jimmy Eat World
This album is so awesome I actually can’t decide if it or MCR should occupy the top spot. Please take these two as interchangeable.
I listened to a lot of Jimmy Eat World this year. My love for this band has just grown exponentially since I first listened to Bleed American ~ a year and a half ago. This album helped. Oh boy, did it help. Some of my favourite tracks include My Best Theory (such a grower, seriously), Heart Is Hard to Find, Invented, Cut... heck, the whole album is fantastic. Trust me.

3. My Dinosaur Life - Motion City Soundtrack
I love this record. Motion City Soundtrack are another band that I’ve listened to an awful lot this year, which really started when I bought this album. I know this album was a pleasant surprise to many people; myself included. It’s as if someone picked all my favourite parts of MCS and put them into one album, and then added even more good stuff. Favourite songs include @!#?@!, Delirium, Her Words Destroyed My Planet, Worker Bee, among others.

4. The Upsides - The Wonder Years
5. At Night We Live - Far
6. Skeletons - Hawthorne Heights
7. Enemy Of The World - Four Year Strong
8. The Suburbs - Arcade Fire
9. Hurley - Weezer
10. LOVE- Angels & Airwaves

11-20 in no particular order:
There Is A Hell, Believe Me I’ve Seen It, There Is A Heaven, Let’s Keep It A Secret - Bring Me the Horizon
This Addiction - Alkaline Trio
Cosmology - Rolo Tomassi
Fuck, i’m a Ghost - Fuck, I’m a Ghost
The Five Ghosts - Stars
Steel Train - Steel Train
Fixed At Zero - VersaEmerge
The Narrative - The Narrative
Dark Is The Way, Light Is The Place - Anberlin
Two Worlds - Tigers Jaw

...I think I’ve forgotten like, a lot. My problem is that I’ve listened to so many individual bands on mixtapes/playlists and whatnot and gone ‘oh, I need to check their album out’ and I haven’t done it yet. Hmm.

Best gig of 2010
Oh, I had fun at gigs this year. I feel the need to say off the bat that I saw Blink this year. Yes! Finally! They’re one of the first bands I ever got into, way back when I was ten or so. So that was special, even more so because I managed to get to the barrier right in the centre, and subsequently got so crushed that later the radiographer described my injuries as something one usually got in a car accident, and I got to spend two and a half hours in a hospital waiting room on my eighteenth birthday. So, so worth it.

But no, when I think of the best gig I went to in 2010, I have to say it was Jimmy Eat World. They are so, so good live. I can’t stress that enough. Go see them, even if you only have a passing interest in them. I’m serious. I couldn’t take my eyes of them. I think seeing Goodbye Sky Harbor live is one of the best gig moments of my life. I still get shivers thinking about it. Jimmy Eat World was just one of those gigs where you walk out feeling like you’ve just witnessed something incredible.

Anticipation.
I’m most looking forward to new albums by the following:
- blink-182 (always a bit worrying when a band ends up on the list two years running; nevertheless, I remain optimistic.)
- Brand New (I can’t see them releasing an album next year but they seem to be on everyone else’s list, so I’ll just put them out there for luck)
- Bright Eyes
- The Wonder Years
- All Time Low
- Panic! at the Disco
- Patrick Stump

...and again, more I’ve probably forgotten about. All in all, 2011 promises to be pretty frickin’ sweet.

And... yeah. I know I say every single year that the year’s been good for music, but I really feel that 2010 has been great. Compiling these lists has just made me realise how many albums were released this year that I haven't even had the chance to give a proper listen to yet. I got into so, so many new bands this year. In all honesty, I’ve never been this excited about music since I was eleven. I can’t wait to see what 2011 has in store.

Thank you for taking the time to read my fangirling/hopeless inarticulate-ness.
