  • college-remindin' tunes

    27 Jun 2008, 2:46

I thought at first I wouldn't be able to come up with songs, but after I thought about it, I realized I could easily come up with more than 20.
Here are some of them, as I randomly think of them, plus the story behind the song.
    1. John Moran, I Didn't Know I Was Going to Have a Party.
This is just one track off one of two recordings I had by this guy while I was in college. The series of coincidences set off by it are one of the best stories I have. This song really tripped out John and Joe at the Rutland House, and it became a point of conversation for some time afterward.
    2. Einsturzende Neubauten, Still am Abend
This song's involved in the same story. I did a presentation on it in Philosophical Hermeneutics class.
    3. Marilyn Manson, The Beautiful People
I lived with Quinten for three years. This stuff was his bread and butter. I was into it at the time too. There's other songs from this artist and genre that also remind me of that time (Limp Bizkit, anyone?), but I'm not going to let them dominate the list.
    4. They Might Be Giants, S-E-X-X-Y
Remember Ian playing this for me in he and Lou's unforgettably cluttered freshman dorm, on a stereo with very big speakers. As it started playing, he stood on a chair and played air bass.
    5. Coldcut, Timber
Really dug the video to this on MTV Amp. I showed it on a tape once at Rutland. Years later I played the track and Joe flipped out, saying he'd been trying to find this song for years, not remembering where he'd once heard it.
    6. Arlo Guthrie, Alice's Restaurant
The one time I've ever heard this whole song was from, again, Ian's dorm (I think), but a year later. I sat on the fire escape and listened to it, not believing it wasn't over yet.
    7. Chumbawumba, Tubthumping
When this song was everywhere, my history prof once started class by writing "I get knocked down but I get up again" on the blackboard, then turned and looked at us all like "Huh?"
    8. U2, With or Without You
Slowed down, as per the version Jason put on the tape he gave me during my freshman year.
    9. Husker Du, Diane
Jason made us perform this song once upstairs at the School St. place when some of us webweaving kids had come over with John to smoke.
    10. Tool, Forty-six and Two
I listened to Aenima a lot in my dorm room when I was 18 or 19.
    11. Michael Jackson, Thriller
My sophomore year, webweaving performed this at that competition, what was it called, Carpenter Coffeehouse? They won. It was the year I wasn't in the group, so I just watched.
    12. Wesley Willis, Michael Jackson Sucks Little Boys' Dicks
We all enjoyed Wesley's show at Hairy Mary's, and I remember this song in particular. (He opened with it.)
    13. Dead Kennedys, Chickenshit Conformist
I played this song in a presentation I gave on punk rock in my "history of rock & roll" class. I printed out the lyrics and passed 'em out so everyone could read along.
    14. Ween, She Wanted to Leave
I got real into Ween. I just remember listening to this one a lot.
    15. The Beatles, I'm So Tired
Again, just a song I was into. Maybe I was up late studying or something.
    16. Ella Fitzgerald (probably), Bei Mir Bist Du Schoen
This was on a tape Jennie Catlett gave me.
    17. Garbage, #1 Crush
Just one of those songs that was on all the time. I remembering singing along to it in a van full of people.
    18. Sheryl Crow, If It Makes You Happy
This was on in the dining hall once when Tony and I were eating, and he looked thoughtful and said he thought he agreed with it.
    19. Suicide is Painless (Theme from M*A*S*H)
Stacey told me she thought everyone has a theme song, and we decided this was Scott's.
    20. Radiohead, High & Dry
Scott was the first person I knew listening to Radiohead (then Phil). This is the first song I remember liking. I sang it once to Andrea when she wore a Radiohead shirt to Spencer's class.
Oop, just thought of some more--
    21. G. Love & Special Sauce, Baby's Got Sauce
Andrea and Courtney came over to Phil and I's once and danced to this. We'd been playing the disc a lot. Joe and Phil and I went to see 'em at the Val Air.
    22. Vidna Obmana, Hypnotic Web
This was the music used in the one scene we (with Cecily and Joe) filmed of a movie I wanted to make.
