As far as Carly, l.o.v.e. her & her peers (Laura Nyro, Joni Mitchell, and Carole King). I love the original version of "Son of a Gun" with Janet, really groovy. For my thoughts on my favorite period of Carly, though I own all her stuff, check this out: I also did a mini-essay on the post-TVR batch of JJ albums when I first launched if you want my more fleshed out thoughts on those LPs:

"Rollercoaster" is my favorite song from that LP. I love how multifaceted the track is, the energy captured me the very first time I heard it. Again, my only gripe with that LP was the pacing and the inclusion of "Greatest X" and "The 1" (go go and Missy don't work well with Janet). As far as DJ, I like that it established Janet back with her black base and had a very rich sound. It has teeth in spots (the three brazen hip-hop soul cuts that blaze by after "Looking For Love" are #epic). It also houses her last great crossover jam, "Just a Little While" that I felt was sorely slept on. In terms of "Fresh..." I think the video was great, it was inspired by Stanley Kubrick's "Eyes Wide Shut" and the subliminal vibe (i.e.-repeated themes) went over some folks heads. I loved how smutty it and the video were, everything worked. Sadly the label got cold feet and the rest is history.

The musicality of "Electric Circus" is what makes it a favorite for me, it transcends the hip-hop label, but is of it at the same time. I love it. UMC is a decent party LP, has some decent cuts, but wasn't as dope as "Be" or FF. The new LP by Common was kinda uneven for me, but had some amazing tracks ("Blue Sky") and other ones that appealed to my baser instincts lol ("Ghetto Dreams (Remix)"). What can I say, Common is FINE! LOL. Jennifer is EVERYTHING. I love how she has grown as an artist, I was sad she did an about face with the bulk of "Love?". I think "Fresh Out the Oven" was so slept on, very dark & subliminal. I agree, "Rebirth" is transitional, but has some higlights ("Cherry Pie," "Whatever...," "I, Love"). I ADORE "Como" and "Brave." Epic works. TiMT was a necessary need to show she wasn't just a commercial entity, as a big Carly Simon fan, her take on "You Belong to Me" was really, really beautiful. How was your New Year start?

2013 has had a quiet start, but it is building toward something major it seems. Now. In terms of Janet, personally, I love "20 Y.O.," bottom to top. I don't think was as alluring as "Damita Jo," but it had a really cool, harsh, unapologetic black dance edge to the first side, the second side (especially if you have the Japanese version, which I do) is a nice cool down compliment. I dig "Show Me" lol, it actually has an unauthorized sample of Kraftwerk in it (the "Peng!" is where its from). It reminds me a lot of what her brother did with "Dangerous" & how he folded in the new black dance vibes of New Jack Swing into his vibe. Janet did that with the snap & the like, and used it without it using her. "Discipline" suffered from a lot of uneven pacing, an issue I had with "All For You." Excusing "Greatest X" & "The 1," it was a contemporary retelling of her sound. The Rodney sides were the strongest, but there were some other highlights in the batch. I really like "Curtains," very TVR.

I am glad you enjoyed the essay on TiMT. In context, it was a very bold, mature, and musical step forward. The first in really making Lopez into a musical entity she wanted to be, it also made "Rebirth," as a follow-up, very disappointing. Thankfully in '07 she got it together and truly topped herself. Lol, "Electric Circus" is very galvanizing, people love it or hate it you know? I happen to be in the former camp. It is nice to meet "constructive" and "Varied" Janet fans. Imho, I feel her last three albums (especially "Damita Jo" and "20 Y.O.") got a bum rap. Stay in touch. Q.
