With this application, You can generate sleek and stylish (yeah, sure ;) wallpaper for Your Mac made from covers of your favorite albums!
It's very beta!
Please report any bugs and present your opinions. I hadn't even truly tested it ;)
There's already Windows version of similar app - Gjisco's Last.fm Desktop Generator. However, my generator is an independent project, written entirely from scratch.

UPDATE Mac Desktop Generator 0.55
It's not new big version. It's just one bug fix and effect of one hour fun with animations in Cocoa ;)
Changelog:
+ [fixed] unknown album covers should not be displayed
+ [added] Some UI fireworks ;)
INSTRUCTIONS:
- download zip file from link above
- unzip it
- drag the application to your applications folder
- run it
- enter your Last.fm username
- click 'generate'
- save the image somwhere and manually set it as a desktop wallpaper
- enjoy :D
FEATURES:
+ generating image of tiled covers based on your's top albums list
+ saving file as .tiff
+ auto setting size of wallpaper, based on your's desktop resolution
+ auto setting number of covers to best fit your display
MISSING FEATURES (which I want to implement):
+ manually setting number of tiles
+ editing colors and effects of image
+ auto-setting new wallpaper

- Mac OS X 10.4+ (Tiger) both PPC and Intel
- Last.fm account
- active internet connection
In final version I will try to include missing features mentioned above, fix bugs (if there are any) and add feature that You will request.

MikeManger Excellent work. Booted up my Mac just to try it out. :-) FYI: your screengrab doesn't link to the full shot, as I expect you intended. Is there anyway of changing the order?

solak At this time the only way to change the order is to re-generate wallpaper. But I'll add this option in next release. It should be as easy as adding one button.

would there be a way of making the albums with no artwork not appear? keep up the good work, can't wait for new features...

chrishide87: I've done some filter, so the unknown artworks won't apper. Looks like it doesn't work well. Could you tell me which albums were placed on your wallpaper with 'unknown' artwork?

yeah sure... ¡Forward, Russia! - Give Me A Wall Tokyo Police Club - Lessons In Crime Sufjan Stevens - The Avalanche other than that - the rest work fine... is there any way you can change the algorithm of the tiling to display more listened to artwork larger than the others?

I've uploaded new version. I really don't have much time, I'm working on some commercial project. In about one month I'll be done with it and I will work on new version of MacDesktopGen. What I'm planning: - fancy UI ;) - image manipulation (CoreImage, it means brightness, colour and other adjustments avaiable) - printing A4/A3 posters :D Please tell me if there are any problems with 'unknown' artworks.

colombod There is plenty of software for generating a puzzle given an image to be made from other images ... why not extending your great application, user can provide a source image which will be build as a mosaic made of album arts

oj_trel dude that generator stuff blows my mind since youve put that hidden functions you know and thats somethin. i dont really got to take pills anymore, i can join in my ancestors and reorganise my consciousness whenever i want to and without spending a dime really! thanks tom! much appreciate your work

TUpton It'd be nice to have options to grab the album covers from specified charts. I.e., top overall albums, from the last 3 months, etc..
