• Not trying to sound pretentious

My obsession with indie rock, and really the origin of an intense desire to track down new music began with a love affair and a hate affair. A love affair with WONC, the local college radio station, and a radio walkman. A hate affair with my mother. After a fight with her, i'd go for a long directionless walk around town. I'd bring my walkman and a pen, and scrawl song lyrics and song titles on my hand, even my arm if i ran out of room. One such night, a Friday, a new radio show came on. They called themselves Lo-Fidelity Radio, hosted by Wes and Lindsey from 8-10. Eventually it evolved, moving to Sundays from 3-6 so it wouldn't be pre-empted by sports all the time, and adding DJs, Wes and Greg hosted the Sunday version, and then added another DJ (NIck, maybe?), and eventually the show started going downhill as Wes got ready to graduate, but for the 2-3 years that it existed, I was a devoted listener. Death Cab for Cutie, Pinback, Fischerspooner, Matt Pond PA, that ridiculous song by the Trachtenburg Family Slideshow Players that I've subjected many of you to, and so many others. I even joined Myspace with the sole purpose of obtaining their playlists. The show is no longer on the air (though I recently discovered that someone, I'm hoping Wes, has begun an online version. I have yet to listen to it, but I hope its as good as the original, or better). Thanks to the library, establishing a substantial music fixation didn't take long, soon I had acquired enough music to slow down our desktop. Its only spiraled out of control since then...

  • Love Like a Sunset

Sat 13 Jun – Phoenix, Amazing Baby The show was absolutely astounding. Phoenix were such modest and spectacular musicians, and while the Chicago Tribune's review nagged on them for not having lots of stage banter and seeming "robotic", the author of that review failed to mention that the lack of stage banter was due to the overwhelming cascade of cheering and clapping that followed each song. As for any "robotic" movement, it seemed to me that Phoenix was totally in their element as performers, if a bit awestruck at the reaction they got--indeed, their merch booth guy commented after the show that they made more money in one night in Chicago than they did selling for the entire 2006 tour. To be met with this sort of popularity after such a dismal following in 2006 would transcend any performer's grounding, and it hardly seemed to do so to Phoenix. The band ventured into darker corners of its repertoire, playing mainly off their newest album "Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix", but including the instrumental offer of that album ("Love Like a Sunset", see title), as well as an older single, "If I Ever Feel Better" along with their triumphant first single off "Wolfgang", "1901" as their mind-blowing encore. An amazing show, I can only hope that Phoenix returns to a bigger crowd and venue, and that a dance party ensues instantaneously.
  • Music Festivals This Summer

First of all, this summer looks to be pretty epic, music wise.
Second of all, there are 4 great festivals (at least) nearby: Summerfest (Milwaukee), Pitchfork (Chicago), Warped Tour (Tinley Park), and Lollapalooza (Chicago)
These are the bands from the festivals that I care about seeing personally haha. Pitchfork isn't done releasing their lineup, and Lollapalooza clearly isn't, since they're bitches. I'm linking to the sites I found these lineups at so you can check them out for yourself. Keep in mind that on the Warped Tour site, every band listed is not playing every date, so you have to check who'll be in Chicago specifically. If you're tagged, that means I think you care remotely about either the festivals, the bands, or going with me to any of these shows. or any of the above. Hooray. On to the bands...

    Summerfest (June 25-July 5)
June 25: Rise Against and Rancid
    June 26: the Offspring
July 2: No Doubt with Paramore and Bedouin Soundclash (this is the paying show, there's one every night), Judas Priest, Guster, Shiny Toy Guns
July 4: The Fray with Jack's Mannequin (paying show)

    Pitchfork (July 17-19)
July 17: Yo La Tengo, Built to Spill
    July 18: The National
July 19" The Walkmen, The Flaming Lips

    Warped Tour (August 1)
Anti-Flag, Bad Religion, Bayside, Big D and the Kids Table, Bouncing Souls, Innerpartysystem, Jet Lag Gemini, Less Than Jake, [NOFX are lame bastards and not playing Chicago], Senses Fail, Streetlight Manifesto, maybe The Ataris

Lollapalooza (August 7-9)(none of these are official, the starred ones are vaguely confirmed)
*Depeche Mode, *The Killers, *Kings of Leon, *The Decemberists, Atmosphere, Animal Collective, Band of Horses, Ben Folds, Franz Ferdinand, Kaiser Chiefs, Lily Allen, Matt and Kim, Metric, OK Go, Ra Ra Riot, Rancid, Razorlight, Regina Spektor, Rise Against, Silversun Pickups, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Vampire Weekend, The Gaslight Anthem, Peter Bjorn and John
