A bit late with this, seeing as it's February 2010. Anyway, here's some of my favourite albums of 2009 and reasons why.

Dead to Me - African Elephants

Totally different to their previous work, which is pretty much why it recieved a mixed bag of opinions. Underwhelming at first, but definately a grower once you hear it for what it is, not 'Cuban Ballerina II' which many people wanted. The mish-mash of styles is what kept me listening. 8.5/10

Teenage Bottlerocket - They Came From the Shadows

Stupidly catchy pop-punk. If you like Screeching Weasel, Teen Idols... actually, if you like any band that bows down to the Ramones, chances are you'll love this. Forbidden Planet and the title track were stuck in my head for weeks! 8/10

The Mighty Mighty Bosstones - Pin Points & Gin Joints

Awesome comeback album. They don't really resemble the ska-core tag that they created on the Devil's Night Out album, but they had almost lost that completely when they released Let's Face It. Instead, there's a more laid-back, relaxed vibe, probably from the band re-charging their batteries over the last few years. Highlights for me are 'The Bricklayer's Story', 'The Route That I Took' and the 6+ minute closer 'A Pretty Sad Excuse'. 9/10

Manic Street Preachers - Journal For Plague Lovers

This was a nice surprise. An obvious nod to the Holy Bible album (my favourite of their releases) in sound, lyrics (by Richey Edwards) and artwork. I enjoyed the first half of the album more than the second, although song 12 'Virginia State Epileptic Colony' is my favourite track. 7.5/10

American Steel - Dear Friends and Gentle Hearts

I would say this band is overlooked. One of Fat Wreck's better signings in recent years. Just a great punk band with some other influences thrown in the mix. A lot of sing-alongs ('Lights Out', 'Finally Alone', 'Safe and Sound'... the list goes on). On first listen I thought their previous album Destroy Their Future was better... now I'm not sure. This is the biggest grower of 2009 for me. 9/10

Disappointment of 2009

Reel Big Fish - Fame, Fortune And Fornication

This came across as rushed, uninspired and a missed opportunity. They've always done good cover songs, but a lot of this seems half-arsed. Monkey Man (previously released) is still great, as is Won't Back Down and the Edna's Goldfish track Veronica Sawyer, but a cover of Brown Eyed Girl (yawn) is too obvious. If only the whole album was as strong as Authority Song (in my opinion, the best track here). Not bad, but this could've been a lot better. 5.5/10
