Reminds me of synesthesia for some reasons (alternate spelling sometimes "synaesthesia") and the great synesthetic composer Olivier Messiaen. Ever check his stuff out? It's pretty damn good!

yeah...Honneger was part of Les Six...with Darius Milhaud, Francis Poulenc, etc. They were all heavily influenced by the wonderfully quixotic Erik Satie. Pierre Schaeffer also did a nice musique-concrete piece using train noises. I really like his stuff (even more than the concrete of Pierre Henry). Cheers mate!...must sleep...thanks for the great chat!

Have you ever heard the Swiss composer Arthur Honneger's fantastic steam engine orchestral tone poem Pacific 231? Yeah...I'm glad you pointed that out about "Empire State (Son House...)"...actually, I seem to remember that Son House worked for the railroad in New York State as well...

read your full review of the Mercury Rev "Best Of..."...you've got a great style, man! Great command of prose and wonderful insights on my favorite band ever. And you really called it with Nikki Sudden. I saw him play here in Austin before he died and he told me to tell the Rev "thanks for covering my song" (as if I knew them)...wish I could pass that message along to them some day. keep up the good writing!
