In chronological order.
12/31/05 - moe.
@ Thomas Wolfe: Technically this year and last. It was a fantastic way to ring in the new year with some of my closest friends. Now don't get me wrong NYE was good, but I will go out on a limb and say the 12/30 performance was better in terms of music (check out the second set paranoid andriod>meat throughout). NYE was better in terms of fun.
1/26/06 - SkyHi & THB @ Wallstreet: Two of my favorite local bands, togethe. A great night of dancing and most importantly the FUNK.
2/4/06 - Moonshine Still
& Garage Deluxe @ Exit/In: Moonshine Still never disappoints me. Their light show is always great and their playing is always top notch. Garage Deluxe was a suprise. They are a local Knoxville band that does blues/rock, check them out if they are ever in your area.
3/4/06 - Old Union & Delta Moon @ 3rd & Lindsley: My birthday celebration weekend. Old Union brought the heat this night!
4/21/06 - Rites of Spring & Moonshine Still
@ Exit/In: Rites of Spring featured Old Union, My Morning Jacket, Cary Brothers and some other people I forget at the moment. My old roomie works at Vandy so I got a free ticket. I love free tickets. The after-show was at the Exit/In featuring none other than my favorite regional band - Moonshine Still
4/30/06 - Disco Biscuits
@ Exit/In: It's taken me a while but I'm slowly warming up to these guys. I got the ever popular "42", which ironically I've had a discussion with Marc Brownstien about when he was in charge of Headcount and I was a team leader of in 2004. I didn't know much of their material at this show even though I've seen them a few times up to this point, but it was definately high energy.
5/2/06 - RAQ
@ Exit/In: Another one of my favorite new bands. I should be seeing them for NYE right now, but sadly I'm not. I'm sure they'll be in the south soon enough again. They LOVE their Nashville fans.
6/17/06 - Bonnaroo: I got a free wrist band - shhh...don't tell anyone. I went the first three years, skipped the forth and got to go to this one on a whim. I met up with an old friend from high school that I hadn't seen in about 10 years. Non-Musical Highlights include: free steak, free Labatt's in a can (including a topper that makes it drink like a bottle), and most importantly the ability to come home and take a shower! Musical Highlights include: Hot Buttered Rum String Band
, Rusted Root
, Blues Traveler
, Damian Jr. "Gong" Marley, Beck (a lot of people knock his performance but it was my first time to see him), and MMW. Radiohead was the big highlight. It was definately up there for me as "performance of the year" and also the first time I've seen them live.
6/25/06 - Phil Lesh & Friends
@ HiFi Buys Amphitheatre: This was sort of a last minute show for me. A friend of mine called on Saturday and asked what I was doing on Sunday, to which I replied "nothing" to which he replied "I just got 4 Phil Lesh & Friends (featuring Dicky Betts) tickets for like $5 do you want to go to Atlanta?" To which I reply "Hell yeah!" And the rest is history. We sold the other two tickets for gas money, drank a lot of $8 beers, ran into a friend who was the tour accountant for Phil and Friends then drove back.
6/27/06 - Phil Lesh & Friends
& Benevento/Russo Duo with Mike Gordon
@ Asheville Civic Center: I was more or less a wookie for this show. I drank Saranacs in the lot with my friend Lucy who hula-hooped and walked her dog, Pockets, while we listed to the show through the loading area. It was fun nevertheless.
6/28/06 - Phil Lesh & Friends
: Phil never lets me down. Highlights include: Greg Osby on sax, Shakedown on 9th Street>Shakedown Street, Loose Lucy and They Love Each Other. Wow! GRAB is hot! They did nothing but impress me and it was their first show of the tour.
8/5/06 - An Evening With Tom Waits
@ The Ryman: Best show of the year.
8/19/06 - Umphrey's McGee
@ Mercy Lounge: My favorite band of 2006. I plan to see them a ton in 2007. Hands down they bring the math-prog-rock'n'roll I crave. Oh, I also drank moonshine that night.
8/25/06 - Perpetual Groove
@ Exit/In: Their name discribes their sound. They did some cool covers this night including Bittersweet Symphony, I'm still do get "it" with them, but I do see a lot of friends when I see them.
9/7/06 - Dubconscious
& Chicago Afrobeat
@ The End: Afrobeat, Reggae and friends, what could be better? This was the first time I've been to the End in about 4 years. It's still a dump.
9/11/06 - Sufjan Stevens
@ The Ryman: The 2nd best show of 2006. Hands down. Can you wear 6 foot spanned wings for 90 minutes? Didn't think so...
9/16/06 - North Mississippi Allstars
& Old Union @ Mercy Lounge: A good rocking time. period. Old Union played before and after NMA to make the evening complete.
9/28/06 - Old Union @ Windows: One of the last shows at my favorite downtown Nashville venues before they closed the doors.
9/29/06 - SkyHi @ Wallstreet: SkyHi's debut CD release!! Boy was it FUNK-EEEE! I'm so proud of them. Their CD gets a lot of rotation from me.
10/4/06 - Moonshine Still
@ Bluesboro: Again, I love these guys.
10/20/06 - Moonshine Still
@ Barley's Taproom: Do you see a pattern here? Plus, I got to see Adam an old buddy from high school.
11/9/06 - RAQ
@ Bar Car: Great show. Listen to the recording on archive.org and you can hear me yelling at the audience because they sucked. The encore was dedicated to me. This was also the night of 2 for 1 Newcastles and the Lousville vs. Rutgers game. Need I say more?
11/21/06 - Disco Biscuits
@ New Daisy: Fantastic show. I just bought Rocket 3 and it kicks ass! I'm glad I decided to go and not sit at home. We played freeze out on the car ride home.
11/24/06 & 11/25/06 - String Cheese Incident
@ The Fabulous Fox Theatre: I haven't seen Cheese since Langerado 2005 and before that it had been 2 years. Their sound has changed so much. I drank too much Jager the first night and had to be attended to. It sucks because they covered their entire first album. The second night rocked too.
12/16/06 - Gilbert/Skates Wedding Reception: This is more on a personal note. But one of my best friends got married this night and the reception had a cover band. Her friend Sally played some of the best drunken cowbell I've ever heard in my life. What a great way to end the year!
Well that just about sums up my "Best of" shows for 2006. I hope I didn't miss any. There were a bunch I didn't mention as well, as you might tell I love going to shows. I just got a new camera and have recently been taking a lot of photos
at shows. Check them out if you get a chance. Until next year...live long and prosper.
