Thanks so much! I put a lot of effort into it, and it's nice to hear that worked out. Last I heard, the vinyl should be coming out today in the UK, and the CDs have been out there since the 30th. I don't think Asthmatic Kitty is going to press physical copies for North America unless the digital sales impress them, unfortunately. I think there's hope, though. The response to Queen of the Wave so far has been their best since Super Sound.

That's a rather elegant interpretation which I can get behind! More stories, more representative figures, more subjective awesomeness. Woooooooot.

It may be a start for diminishing the influence of that centuries old tradition (beginning with the undeniably brilliant Beethoven), but I'm uncertain we'll ever see the end of the cult of genius, nor am I certain I would want to. I like the comfortable narrative that wraps around having "geniuses" who create landmark musical achievements that influence and change the game of music. Being a writer, I like telling stories, and the history of art (whether painting, music, or otherwise) is always a story of tradition vs. progression. Of course, the whole post-modernism form of art makes narrative rather tricky, seeing as the style of post-modernism is the appropriation of any style and calling it "art," whether you wish to forge your own path or sit comfortably in the skin of an ancient tradition. Perhaps that is what makes the current scene so rich, as you say: true post-modernism in popular art would mean artists care less about where they fit into the narrative.

Not just deregulation of production leading to an outpour of competition and creative burst, but I think that a lot of it has to do with the gradual democratization of music making and music listening. While the democratization of music making is easy enough to see, by the democratization of music listening I mean that it only takes a few moments on the internet to compile a wealth of knowledge about most artists and only a short time to acquire an entire career's worth of music by those artists, so listeners are able to really become "critics" in a much easier fashion than before. The consequence of the internet and having such a wealth of music available to us is that everybody becomes equally well versed in how to "judge" art and how to talk up their opinion, so it just makes the highlights in various niches all stand out. Basically, I think that the audience is finally "ready" to hear a lot more music/styles than before, so the reception of the music is going to be more positive.

Yeah I cannot get enough of that track at the moment, one of the clear standouts to me.

Indeed, 2010 is a great year. However, I haven't felt like we've had any "game changing" albums this year. That is, we haven't had anything matching the brilliance of a Sgt. Pepper, Ok Computer, Nevermind, etc. But, we've had more breadth of quality than depth of quality. Myself, I'll take ten albums that deserve 9/10 than one album deserving 10/10 any day. Also, poor Shadrach below you doesn't realize that he joined last.fm when previous iTunes/iPod scrobbles weren't recorded upon signing up with this wonderful website.

There's never anything wrong with having lots of scrobbles for The Beatles or Pavement! Just look at me - those 4 Liverpool lads manage to beat out everybody by quite a large margin, closing in on 8 thousand plays! There's no doubt that they remain the "best" band of all time in my eyes, even if there is less of a personal connection with their music like there is for me and the Hold Steady.

Same here, of course. But, over the last year I've scrobbled so much (it counts everything that I listen to on my iPod as well) I think that my charts are a really accurate representation of my tastes over the last four years, especially as they stand now. Certainly my top 5 is a great representation of my tastes: The Beatles, Hold Steady, Springsteen, Radiohead, and White Stripes. I like my rock, and I like it big, loud, and catchy.

Thanks Crobbo, still getting the hang of this site, downloaded the scrobbler and it is fun to share my listens and see how they add up. Of course for an old timer like me the years of thousands of listens aren't reflected - in fact since my latest itunes library only goes back a couple of years (new computer etc) - still provides a nice snapshot of recent listening history! Nice to see we have "super compatibility!
