    There may be other references, but here's what I know about the term: a certain color of mixed blood African American was referred to as "red" by other African Americans. Dexter Gordon would have fit the description. And, of course, "society" could refer to a well-dressed hipster. So a nick name for a cool "red" dude could be "Society Red" it may in fact refer to a particular person--like Dexter Gordon--but I am not aware of a direct reference. They used to call my Dad "Red" and as far as I know it was a term of endearment and was not used as a derogatory term.
