minimalism
"minimalism", or "minimalist music", is a type of modern classical/experimental music that uses repetition, drones, and/or processes such as "phase shifting" ("allowing two identical phrases or sound samples played at slightly differing speeds to repeat and slowly go out of phase with each other")... the most well-known minimalist composers are philip glass, terry riley, steve reich, john adams and la monte young... i've listened to all of them a bit, as well as a few other composers such as michael nyman, moondog and arvo part... most people probably wouldn't like minimalism... even i find some of it annoying... some of it's great though... my favorite minimalist composer is probably philip glass... then probably michael nyman... this list has most of the minimalist songs i know and like... my favorite ones are "the dam" by philip glass, "in c / mantra" by terry riley and "Passage de L'Egalité" by michael nyman... those songs are all AWESOME...

early rock and roll
rock and roll pretty much started in the 50s.. it evolved from what used to be known as "race music", which is what they called the music black people played and listened to, and "rhythm and blues"... white people (mostly teenagers) started playing and listening to it and they started calling it "rock and roll".. this playlist has songs from the 50s and early 60s.. some of my favorites are "blue monday" by fats domino, "nervous breakdown" by eddie cochran and "be-bop a lula" by gene vincent.. early rock and roll may seem tame compared to modern rock but, perhaps surprisingly, a lot of it still sounds pretty good.. the beatles' "live at the bbc" album has a lot of good covers of early rock and roll songs..

outsider music
"outsider music" is music made by - that's right - outsiders - people who work outside of the mainstream music industry. they often have no musical training and their music usually seems weird or unusual compared to mainstream music. outsider musicians have small cult followings made up of the small percentage of people who appreciate their unusual sound. i'm fairly new to outsider music. i don't love it all but i like some of it. i think daniel johnston was the first outsider musician i was exposed to. i saw the movie "the devil and daniel johnston" a few years ago and found it interesting (i recommend it). i wasn't particularly impressed by the music i heard in the movie but i was intrigued enough to want to listen to his albums. it wasn't until a few years later that i was finally able to do that though. i listened to most, if not all, of his stuff. i didn't love it all but i thought it was alright, liked some songs. most people probably wouldn't be able to stand sitting through mo…

grunge
i grew up on "grunge" and "alternative"... i don't really consider them to be genres though... grunge is just used to refer to a certain group of bands who were in a certain place at a certain time... and when you look at what's considered alternative, it lists hundreds of bands which don't really have anything in common... and it's like, alternative to WHAT? it became mainstream so it wasn't the alternative anymore... anyway though... nirvana, alice in chains, soundgarden and pearl jam are considered "the big four" of grunge... nirvana was my first "favorite band", back in middle school... then i kinda lost interest in them for a bit but got back into them after i downloaded a bunch of unreleased stuff in high school (a lot of which has since been released on "with the lights out")... the unreleased stuff made me like them more cause i liked a lot of it even more than their released stuff... it was a case of "even their bad songs are good!"... they're still one of my favo…

metal
in high school i mostly listened to hard rock and metal. after high school, my taste expanded to include a lot of other stuff and i started getting away from metal. i still like a little metal, but only certain bands. there are some bands who i like a lot and are favorites of mine like black sabbath, faith no more, kyuss, mushroomhead, type o negative and white zombie. then there are other bands who i like but aren't in my favs, like pantera. then there are bands who i don't like that much anymore but i like certain songs by them, like metallica. this playlist has songs i like by metal bands. some of them might not be pure metal but close enough. also, i tend to like semi-obscure songs more than the more well-known/popular ones. forget "iron man" and "paranoid" and "war pigs" by black sabbath, i like "supernaut" and "supertzar" and "the writ". i like their albums "vol. 4" and "sabotage" (that one in particular has some cool stuff), i included most of the songs from them here…

psychedelic rock, garage rock and protopunk
at first, i was just gonna make a psychedelic rock playlist but then i decided to also include garage rock and protopunk which are related... i put the bands in order of how many songs i was including by them... some songs might not fit exactly into the genres i mentioned but close enough i think...

punk
i only really know a few punk bands: the ramones, the clash, the sex pistols, wipers, buzzcocks and minutemen... the ramones' first album is their best... they stayed pretty much the same throughout their career but they're catchy and have a lot of good songs... the clash are a little different - they started out kinda like the ramones but they changed over the years and experimented with different types of music and such, which kinda makes me like them more than the ramones... some of their later songs aren't really "punk" but i included them here anyway cause they're still a punk band for the most part... a lot of the experimental songs are on their album "sandinista!" which some people think isn't as good as their earlier stuff but i think the album's probably a little underrated and respect/like the experimentation they did... i'm not a big fan of the sex pistols but i included one song cause it'd seem wrong if i didn't... the wipers - they're less well-known than the other bands…

post-rock
i think i first heard post-rock when i saw "the life aquatic" a few years back and they had "staralfur" by sigur ros in it... i liked it and tried to find out what it was and then looked into sigur ros... they're the post-rock band i'm most familiar with and probably the one i like the best... their songs "untitled 8" and "hun juro" are awesome... i also like a silver mt. zion though.. i was impressed by their first album "he has left us...".. i especially like the first two songs on the album (especially the second one, that's cool stuff..) which i put here... the rest of the post-rock bands i'm not as familiar with but these are some songs i like...

krautrock
"krautrock" is german experimental rock from the 60s and 70s... i know three of the main bands - can, neu! and faust... after listening to them i became a fan of krautrock... krautrock was influenced by psychedelic rock and avant-garde music and later influenced post-punk and such bands as radiohead and stereolab... it's pretty cool stuff i think...

surf rock
i like surf rock... the first 5 of these tracks, except the second, are from the pulp fiction soundtrack... then link wray's "rumble", which i'm not sure if is technically surf rock but i'd say it's similar enough to include... then there's 4 songs by "shadowy men on a shadowy planet" who are the band that does the "kids in the hall" theme song... then there's several songs from a greek garage/surf rock band called "the last drive".. they're kind of an obscure band i think, not very well known, but they're great! their album "underworld shakedown" is really good, i recommend it...

reggae
i'm not a big fan of reggae (it's a little too mellow for me and i find some of it annoying) but i like some songs... i like jimmy cliff, he's pretty good... bob marley i thought was overrated but i listened to a greatest hits album of his recently and he's alright... there's a few other songs i know which are on this list... several of them come from the soundtrack to the movie "the harder they come" so i'd recommend that... at the end there are a couple clash songs and a police song which maybe aren't pure reggae but they're reggae songs that those bands did so whatever...

best film scores/songs written for movies
these are songs i like from movie scores/soundtracks - songs written for movies... they're mostly instrumental scores but i put a few at the end that have singing... i think "psycho" by bernard herrmann is the best film score... the "bodysong" soundtrack by jonny greenwood is cool stuff, as is "recordings of music for films" by vincent gallo...

no speak english...
songs i know and like that are sung in a language other than english... most of them are either french and i know them from movies or are brazilian and i know from the radio station i listen to (WERS). i could have included some other stuff like sigur ros but i don't think that would fit with the rest of the stuff.

ragtime
then there's ragtime, which is pretty much scott joplin. most people nowadays probably wouldn't like this kind of music, but i do. everyone knows "the entertainer", but it's probably the song i like least out of the ones i know. "maple leaf rag" is also kinda popular but i like that one. i also really like "a real slow drag". it's different from his other stuff, slower and more emotional.

blues
some blues (and some folk...) songs i like. i like acoustic blues a lot better than electric but some electric's good too. skip james is my favorite blues guy. i don't know how anyone can like anyone else better. lead belly's more folk than blues but he's good too.

classical music
my favorite classical songs... i'm by no means an expert on classical music but i like it and know some songs. i only know a few songs by name, the others i know because i made note of them. beethoven's my favorite composer. i love his piano sonatas, as you can tell from the list...
