Art Tatum is one of the few people that i really wish i knew in person or lived in the same era with or even just have met once.

it's no exaggeration to say his playing cannot be copied the same way by any other pair of hands. it's not just the incredible technical ability that shines so much. it's his willingness to explore the imagined limitations of the orthodox concepts. surely, it produced astonishing and unique rhythmic and harmonic complexities way ahead of his time. the unusual chord progressions and extraordinary improvisations of creativity are simply self explanatory. (new set of perspective: Tea for Two) his introduction of a swinging pulse to jazz and its impact shall be felt for many generations to come.

and even more inspiringly, he established all of the above despite his limited sight.

When Tatum walked into a club where Fats Waller was playing, Waller stepped away from the piano bench to make way for Tatum, announcing, "I only play the piano, but tonight God is in the house".

tatum wasn't just a musician, he was a hero. and will be for the rest of time.
