• ---To Europe and Back Again---->

    9 Nov 2008, 7:32

So this past summer I spent 2 months in Europe...mostly Spain and England. I know I left a great deal out, but my time and my wallet were a bit tight :) Even so, I found so many new things that I just fell in love with. Spanish wine (...) spaniards in general, LIVERPOOL FC, the Welsh, and the intoxicating charm that is london. Amidst it all are my new top albums. Though I obviously didn't discover them all while i was in Europe as I was busy living, they definitely coloured my experiences during and after my reentry and readjustment. And fyi, they're in no particular order.

    1. Moby: Play
My fave off this album is obviously Porcelain. I took genetics while I was in spain, and this definitely helped my concentration.
    Top Tracks: Porcelain, Inside, Honey

    2. John Lunn and Jim Williams: Hotel Babylon
Ok, so I'm a BBC fanatic, and Hotel Babylon is my favorite show. Now I can say I've been everywhere that the opening credits highlight! Really though, it's just a spectacular compilation that really conveys that london vibe.
Top Tracks: Walking the Line, Thames Light, Swimming Under Water

    3. Coldplay: Viva la Vida
So if you really didn't like Coldplay's classic sound, you should definitely check out this album. It's totally different, and very worldly. It takes you from london to spain to Persia to Japan and back again. No getting "Lost" on this one.
Top Tracks: Yes, 42, Cemeteries of London

    4. Stéphane Pompoungac: Hôtel Costes Compilations
Mixed by Paris' top hotel DJ, they definitely have the European flavour. I've generally found volumes 1, 2, 3, 5, and 10 to be my favorites. I also look to them to find good new outlets in lounge music.
Top Tracks: Cleopatra in New York (Nickodemus), London in the Rain (Variety Lab), Adore (I:Cube)

    5. Boozoo Bajou: Satta
I find this to be a cajun twist on electronica. It's pretty funky and downright weird at times, but it's still really cool. Texas is pretty close to the Big Easy, you know.
Top Tracks: Yma, Night Over Manaus, Satta

    6. Metropolitan Jazz Affair: Mja
A modern twist on old-school jazz heavyweights. It's got horns, piano, and a swingin percussion line. I also have part of their newer album, Bird of Spring, but I tend to like the overall vibe of their freshman album best.
    Top Tracks: Covoron, Navarone

    7. Unforscene: Fingers and Thumbs
This is like taking a trip around the world circa 1940, but simultaneously at present time too. It's an excellent fusion of electronica, social commentary, and just really cool voice clips from 60 years ago. Thanks to ProperlyChilled podcast for this discovery!
Top Tracks: This Is London, Belly Full of Lead, The Journey

    8. Oscar Peterson: Oscar's Ballads 1990-2000
Though we said goodbye to one of the all-time jazz greats this past December, I still search for new albums of his. This is one of the best, for me, rivaling even Jazz 'Round Midnight and Compact Jazz.
Top Tracks: Harcourt Nights, Love Ballade, Nighttime
  • Una Exploración de Jazz: El Nuevo Estilo

    19 Ene 2008, 2:18

Ahora tienen pruebas verdaderas. Soy bilingüe! :]

  • The Year in Music: 2007

    8 Dic 2007, 7:16

So, in this entry, I decided that I would look at the songs I listened to most this year, and record what I felt, and really what what made me listen to them so much this past year. I won't do every single song in my top 50 tracks, but just a select 10.

    1. Royksopp: In Space.
[So, I just feel like I'm floating in space. It's so relaxing an stress relieving...and I've needed that a lot this year.]In Space

    2. Coldplay: The Scientist.
[One of my all-time favorite coldplay songs. It was back in high school, and I guess still reminds me of those days. Just a good song.]The Scientist

    3. Gotan Project: Last Tango in Paris.
[So, I kinda got in touch with my euro side of musical taste this year. It makes me feel like I'm on a damp cool back-street in paris somewhere. Any song that can take me on a journey like that is worth listening to.]Last Tango in Paris

    4. De-Phazz: Cut the Jazz
[Again, euro side. First song I heard by them. Definitely one of the best. To me it represents branching out of my musical taste. No more top 40.]Cut The Jazz

    5. John Mayer: Slow Dancing in a Burning Room.
[This is how I felt about love, and life in general a lot this year. I was going through a lot of change. So soothing, and the words sang true to me.]Slow Dancing in a Burning Room

    6. John Mayer: St. Patrick's Day.
[My favorite JM song of all time, though the previous one runs a close second. It just paints a beautiful picture in my mind of love and happiness. The counter to Slow Dancing in a Burning Room.]St. Patrick's Day

    7. Maroon 5: Sunday Morning
[Another great picture of love. It just makes me smile, and of course i love the upbeat vibe. It's happy stuff.]Sunday Morning

    8. Reik: Yo Quisiera
[So, I just got into Reik this year. I don't really have a feeling or expression for this one. I just like it. That's all.]Yo Quisiera

    9. Kyoto Jazz Massive: Nacer do Sol.
[When I listen to this song, I feel like I'm waking up to a brand new, fresh, and beautiful morning. It helps me relax, like most KJM, and to feel content about the day.]Nacer Do Sol

    10. Maná: Tengo Muchas Alas.
[While it's a melancholy song, I always felt a sense of peace when I heard this song. No matter how bad things get, I can always get out of it. Things will always get better.]Tengo Muchas Alas
  • "And so," she said, "Things change."
