After Nas' arrival on Def Jam, he immediately proceeded with making some of his more controversial concepts such as proclaiming that hip hop is dead and addressing racism with his untitled album. On HHID, Nas claimed that in order to carry on tradition, one must follow the styles and creativity from the golden age of hip hop instead of selling out just to make a profit from singles and not full albums. Also, Nas addressed that people were making a career too much from beefing and decided to respond to 50 Cent's "piggy bank" with a verse on a mixtape track called "Don't Body Yourself" f/ The Game. He didn't want so-called beef to build record sales for him nor his opponent. Also, Nas felt he knew why 50 was mad because 50 was supposed to be featured on Jennifer Lopez's single, but Nas took the place due to popularity and J.Lo herself stated that Nas was her favorite rapper. Both are listed for comparison:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zR3xw17OEcQ
On Untitled, Nas later responded to 50 on "Queens Get The Money" with the lines "niggas still screaming, paper chasing" "Take 27 emcees, put them in a line and/they out of alignment/My assignments/since he said retirement/Hiding behind +8 mile+ and +The Chronic+/+Gets rich but dies rhymin+/Now, add 23 more/for queens to be more/I'm over they heads like a bulimic on a sea-saw/Now, that's +50+ porch monkeys ate up at the same time" and "My queen used her milkshake to bring y'all to my slaughterhouses."
On the original version of Hero, Nas claimed that L.A. Reid and Doug Morris was on his side with the 'Nigger' concept. However, due to threats of investors withdrawing money ($80 million) from Def Jam and calls from the White House, Nas lost some of his creativity and the album finally released with a few gems - some tracks that didn't make the cut were on DJ 31 Degreez's El Dorado Black Project. As Nas said: "I'm American born. Love America, love my people, love all mankind, all nationalities. You know, I think it's just been recent where everybody started to feel like it was an elite group that runs everything and everybody else was sheep, ignorant. Making all ethnicities, colors, and creeds 'niggas.' Blind to what's really going on. So, I say take off the wool from your eyes. Out with the old America, in with the new. End all racism, all injustice, all oppression.to poor people, any people anywhere in this planet. Let's come together, a new day is rising."
Nas wrote about the Def Jam threat situation on the 3rd verse of Hero:
This universal apartheid
I'm hog-tied
the corporate side
Blocking y'all from going to stores and buying it
First L.A. and Doug Morris was riding wit it
But Newsweek article startled big wigs
They said, Nas, why is he trying it?
My lawyers only see the Billboard charts as winning
Forgetting
Nas the only true rebel since the beginning
Still in musical prison
in jail for the flow
Try telling Bob Dylan, Bruce, or Billy Joel
They can't sing what's in their soul!
So "untitled" it is
I never change nothin'
But people remember this
If Nas can't say it, think about these talented kids
With new ideas being told what they can and can't spit
I can't sit and watch it
So, shit, I'ma drop it
Like it or not
You ain't gotta cop it
I'm a hustler in the studio
Cups of Don Julio
No matter what the CD called
I'm unbeatable, y'all!
