Rap releases were definitely weak this year. I have a few faves, but nothing that really stands out. I'll probably give both J Cole and Ross' albums a miss. Ross will be the same old, might check it out for the beats tho. Lol I doubt it. it's a shame iggy got all these coons and Tom's backing her.

nicki also reminds me of a t-rex when she's talking to the camera during the interview portions of the show with all the hand movements. ray's a bit of a joke, agreed, but he could be acting for all we know. they showed a preview of the next show where he pushed his girl into the pool. him & berg are obviously cut from the same tree. did you see how moniece slapped fizz's girl? it was like 20 degrees today in nyc j. or better yet ‘brick city’! i couldn't even feel my toes lol

i love that part in "gimme a chance" when the male spanish singer talks rapidly in spanish after she raps and sings. where does azealia state her preference for older 'white man'? i know she said she dated older men in an old interview, but for some reason i can't see her dating an older ‘white man’. like how old are we talking? it just sounds odd. also, i don't know that twigs even identifies as 'black.' did you see when apollo admitted that he lied to phadera about kenya wanting to meet up w/ him to cover his own *? smh. i think nene is childish. that's the type of friend that you don't want in your life..when shit hits the fan, they're quick to dog you out. she really played cynthia. in spite of cynthia's backtracking, nene is still wrong for calling peter a bitch. she doesn't even seem sorry about it. hazel is taking the thirst game to new heights. she doesn't even seem to care about how crazy she's looking on tv lusting for a man who continuously disrespects her.

princess nokia is a rapper/singer, formerly wavy spice. i would liken her music to azealia banks actually, though she has revamped her style a bit. she can hold her own on the mic. http://youtu.be/eEeqzn1XmLE how could be surprised by azealia singing?! you must have not been listening to her tapes or covers before bwet b/c she has proven herself as a capable singer from the jump. i was just as impressed with how plentiful and eclectic the album was. she served us breakfast, lunch, dessert and dinner! my least fav track was actually "nude beach a go-go" b/c it sounded ill-matched beside the other tracks. imo that would have been a great bonus track for a deluxe album or something. j…i was not ready for that boddika breezin track!!! which mj cole track did 'desperado' sample? "all good"? i think i'm slipping into a house mood now! great point about the harlem connection between kelis & azealia. i know kelis is half cuban. but is azealia 'spanish.?

self- love is only half the battle. still, we all have at least one physical trait that's quirky and adds character and play a part in what makes us 'us' for sure as you said. i'm so glad that i'm at an age where i'm settling into my perceived flaws. not feeling the pressure to abide to society's standards of beauty is such a beautiful thing =) neicy nash seems insecure. she reminds me of women who are so thirsty for a man or scared to be alone that they put w/ a whole lot, in her case, that includes sucking d. women complain about freedom, equality & the patriarchy, but don't even allow men to meet them half way. i thought marriage & relationships were a two-way street. why don't we see too many articles about what men can do to keep women happy? i'm going to check out the interview bri had w/ hiphopdx. re: danity kane, dawn supposedly got into a physical altercation w/ the other two and the group officially dissolved afterwards.

i never viewed chris as an 'amazing' dancer. always thought he was too tall/big to be pop lockin' like that lol. i know i'm in the minority w/ that tho. idk, i think the best is prob yet to come for twigs yet i think like gaga, her steez can become tired. maybe she'll cross over to the mainstream. it's interesting that you mentioned gaga considering that her poppy, 'safe' music doesn't match her eccentric persona. there's a similar thing going on w/ twigs in a sense. what makes twigs different from someone like bjork, for example, whom she is clearly inspired by, is that the music isn't as remarkable as the visuals behind it whereas both bjork's music & image is equally arresting imo. ditto on jessie ware. the record was a disappointment, but i loved the album's cover art and "sometimes.." it's smooth af! lol @ me forgetting about portrait's "honey dip" & "here we go again" - you sure schooled me :p how does one go about embracing so-called "flaws" anyway?

also, this might be odd, but i actually loved the random male voice in the background of "all night" saying shit like "uh uh" "now sing" "one" lol. are you still planning to go to kelela's dec. show in nyc? i still didn't get to tt, but i plan to listen to it some point this week. depth & tt is something that i wouldn't naturally think would go together, why do you think she has depth? i actually had the exact same sentiments about the lyrics of "cold sweat"! whether it's life, career, etc..seem you can never let your guard completely down. loved the lines about having "eyes on your back" my favorite part is when she says, that the ppl that doubted her are coming back "like they're an option" ! isn't that a tight line? the song is by no means cryptic or too complex, but there's lots of food-for-thought. i actually enjoyed 'bet on it' but dev is all over that track..it's just a lil subtle. did you forget that guitar solo? i'm assuming that's all him.

chance jumping in before sza finished her verse was dope imo. i thought of it as a river flowing into an ocean, though i loved your description of it as a "break in thought" as well. i think it's sonically intriguing since sza sings in an almost submissive, infantile, fragile tone while chance's verse is more dominant. it's almost as if chance has grown impatient & is saying, "all right, enough w/ the 'baby talk, let me show you how it's really done","you know? lmao @ i was going to mention anthony's positive reviews of q and future's. that's a moment when he loses all credibility imo lol. i liked "bankhead' too ;) for some reason, i'm not feeling the extended version of "go all night"! i think i liked the tease of the shorter version..love the melodramatic lyrics of chorus ( ie"take my body") . i didn't need the bit about her "pulling up to his place in the car and sitting on the couch" etc you know lol? i think she had something special going w/ the evasive lyrics.

some parents are not nurturing and are simply absent. i can't tell you how often i''ve seen parents cursing at their kids in public, hitting & calling them out of their names on the subways etc btw. then ppl wonder why they have behavioral and self-esteem issues smh. while administrators have really dropped the ball in education, a child's home life sets the foundation for a lot of things. oh, yea wakefield is actually a decent nabe..but is further north. i don't know what to make of the bill cosby scandal, but you made an thought-provoking remark about excusing males when they 'misbehave." apparently, janice dickinson claims he raped her. i don't foresee dej being more than a 1 or 2-hit wonder, but half the shit i hear on the radio is popular w/ ppl so i can be wrong. anthony fantano's review of z was wack .. he also claimed that b/c the beat was old, the song was essentially null and void or less interesting.

my guess is that they're just trying to sell magazines by making provocative statements like that. when have black boyfriends ever not been an accessory for white female pop stars? i never cared for luke james tbh. i almost expect him to be dating someone like jessie. yo! i totally noticed the same types of things when i am viewing shows like "breaking bad."the still you shared looks like a photo or painting. it's just visually stunning. p.s. i love your analysis of the character/show. i feel like getting netflixs to see seasons now..i'm hyped! i only saw 1 ep. of house of cards, but the concept seemed interesting, especially the way the main character engages w/ the viewer. i used to watch 'mad men' in the beginning, but quickly forgot about it. don't you wish poc had these types of complex shows and roles in television btw? i agree that the education system is faltering and at times, pathetic, but institutional learning is only half the problem: it's also a child rearing issue.

Although his career has been winding down for a while now, you still kind of wish Prince would stop messing around with submissive protégés and cliques that go nowhere and instead seek out or work with someone well-known or established... Prince is a paradox: you get the impression that he's still hungry for some level of mainstream recognition and wants to re-establish a connection with the public yet he's so frustratingly insular and stubborn that he eradicates the potential for this to happen frequently.

    la semana pasada
  • SimonePerrota

I agree with you. AOA's concept is well-done yet the album's still a very much style over substance affair. It's clear that Prince is aiming for mass communication on this one but unfortunately he kind of dilutes the melodies and songwriting in the process, which makes his trademark shtick and eccentricity stand out in a rather unflattering way. AOA's pretty weird in the sense that P is lambasting the status quo of modern life (well, more than usual, heh) while simultaneously appropriating a fair few contemporary music trends. I mean, this is probably the point but Prince can't really find a balance and the album is, as you imply, an awkward, and ultimately quite plain, mix between vintage P synth/electro-funk and modern r&b. Still some good songs though but people are getting carried away with it. I expected to enjoy PE a bit more because there seemed to be less contrivance about it but it's a weaker album - all bark and no bite, although IT'S preachiness is a bit more honest.

I love the song, but at this point, i expected an atypical treatment like that from her so i’m not super surprised. everything she has done thus far has been arresting visually. i guess even idiosyncratic can become stale. what did you think of jessie ware's new album? i found it underwhelming, but "sometimes, kinda maybe" is my jam. do you know that miguel was a co-writer on that? i actually enjoyed the adlibs/male voice lingering in the background as she was singing. i suspect that you will find that corny tho lol. when i was listening to the song, however, all i kept thinking was how tight it would be for her to do a r&b album. thxs for the link to your playlist!i almost forgot about monifah. you had me stumped w/ portrait's all natural girl! don't think i ever heard of them, but i'm here for it. what a nice groove. i agree with you about kelis' “chocolate thai” line. it works there.

"bet on it" has the same theme. lol @ my man ursher's moves being spastic to you! to be sure, he overemphasized the routine, but at the same time, the pelvic thrusts were extraordinary so hush-hush j :p see the aforementioned text: "cold sweat" is my shit too bruh! esp when it comes to 'black music,'. then there are times when he gives high ratings to sub par rap records, but it's all subjective i guess. i thought kelea's cut4me was overhyped myself. when I first heard it, i found it a little bit unremarkable since none of the songs stuck as much as it did the second time around. it wasn't until i listened to it a week straight recently that i realized that she's actually a strong vocalist and that there's some nice touches on it. the amalgamation of her crisp vocals besides the more jagged beats are sonically interesting. i loved "keep it cool," "send me out" "go all night pt 2." i wish "go all night" was longer as well. it's such a tasteful record that oozes with sensuality yet it’s sans the usual vulgar libretto we’re accustomed to hearing on most r&b songs. i only learned recently that cut4me was about a girl too.i've never really got into teyana’s music so i didn't listen to her new album.

"i'm in college, i'm college.’ how imaginative. at least the message is not detrimental like 'try me.' oh, don't get me wrong, there's still a part of me that views fontano as a 'rockist white music critic' , but i enjoy his perspectives. he's really articulate and generally goes beyond his distaste for a record by providing intelligent commentary even if i don’t agree with him. the last review i thought he missed the mark on was sza's z. his complaint that chance's jumped on the track before sza finished her verse, for example, makes me think that he's coming from a more technical standpoint & not fully appreciating the nuisances of what makes a particular artist/song interesting

The 45 and over weigh out people our age and younger. The white guy in front was blocking my view a couple times. I'm not going to lie, it gets on my nerves when whites have too much fun at concerts for our own lmaooooo! I have no problem with them being there, but they be blocking the view and taking the best seats ha ha. I had floor seats by the way, so I was in the front. August is tall and skinny in person and Usher is regular size. Usher can entertain for sure. His and JT show is tied for me.The meet and greets was so disorganize though.
