Since you listen to Dengue Fever you may also like reading my article on Cambodian music. http://www.laboratoriummuzycznychfuzji.com/2013/06/labopedia-muzyka-kambodzy-panstwa-w.html If you like it you may also click "lubię to" button to like my website (on the right handside of the page). There's a translation tool in the top right corner.

notheotherone fails to be rendered in a more artistic manner, and their expression remains contorted in scribbly rage. Maybe later, if they can calm down a little. (aaaah I'm so happy someone recognized my icon! Thank you!)

One commenter is right about Jam 88.3! This is where I got most of my music, including Keane, the one I suggested you a long time ago if you can pump your noodle in your head. :)

I'm talking more about how being in groups shape our opinions and such, but yeah, we're going off in tangents here, haha. It's also great how we're having two separate conversations.

Yeah, I don't think it should be that way, personally, and it doesn't have to, but humans just naturally want to group themselves together and form a collective perception about the world. "Groupthink," it's called.

And I feel like it goes beyond the whole mainstream vs. underground thing, because if anything, social circles are more likely to form in underground scenes as there are more stylistic differences musically, whereas Top 40s radio is really just a matter of crowding around whatever's popular. In the "underground," people find their own niche genre (or multiple) and can become wary of other genres. But I think now those social circles have formed around specific bands or scenes rather than entire genres because the walls between genres have been blurred. So if you don't like a band because it's too "pretentious" or too "hipster", you start to form social circles with people who think the same, and you collectively form an idea about what music is "pretentious" or "hipster" so you can avoid it. A social construct, basically. :)

*as far as listening to music goes (had to be specific there, haha)

Probably because music is something of a social construct. It used to be the product of social circles (tribes, etc.), but now it's all reversed; social circles are the products of music and are more or less defined by it. So I guess in a weird way, even though we're more socially integrated globally, we're a little more divided, or at least less adventurous, as far as music goes. I try not to let music affect my relationships with people, or rather, try not to let my relationships with people affect the music I listen to.

(referring to falsewander's comment but directed to both of you) I find that if you take context out of something and view it as just "being," it makes matters infinitely less complicated. In other words, you should just take away all the ridiculous baggage that comes with listening to music - the self-consciousness, the external labels that really say little about the music itself ("pretentious," "hipster," et al) - and approach music as just being music and criticize it as such. It's ridiculous how we distress ourselves with all that crap, if you think about it.

Yeah, I guess it's because a lot of post-rock sounds pretentious at times for 'normal' people.Take Godspeed You! Black Emperor for example. They have a lot of tracks that are just a collection of seemingly random sounds that come together to create music. Close-minded people think that this kind of "experimental" music is pretentious, and therefore automatically label it as hipster music. It's kind of sad really :(

Haha. No, I was referring to myself as the hipster(not you) and that people like me are hard to come by. I'm not a hipster though, but it's just that there seems to be this running joke that all post-rock fans are hipsters (especially if they listen to GY!BE) :)
