#12 – Florence + The Machine – Lungs

Florence + The Machine remind me of Cher, and I kind of like it that way. I’m not talking about that “Moonstruck”, “I’ve got you babe” kind of way. More like an independent woman that can really belt out a tune with some attitude. Her voice is so grandiose that the supporting band is seen here as simply the addition of “the machine”. The album offers plenty for everyone though as Lungs is surprisingly varied. It contains various genres including the bluesy, sultry number “Girl With One Eye”. You can picture yourself sitting by your lonesome in some piano bar staring intently at the fiery redhead make love to the audience via microphone. Listen to the raw power as she screams “you made me cry” from minutes 2:39 - 3:02. Another beautiful bombastic number is “Cosmic Love”. You’ll more than likely find yourself mouthing along with the chorus like the scarred but determined woman you are. Not in touch with your heartrending emotional side? Get to know your stand-up feminist part with the brazen White Stripes-like “Kiss With a Fist”. It isn’t always candles and staring longingly out of windows; sometimes you just have to go out kicking a screaming. “The Machine” portion may be regulated to a generic moniker, but the supporting beats to Florence’s voice hold their own. Look for some good thump in tracks “Howl” and the appropriately named “Drumming Song”. Lungs ends epic style with strings and piano with her going all out on the mic. Not the best track but simply solid like the rest of the album. It’s not necessary to rent a chick-flick and buy a gross of chocolate in order to listen to this, but if nothing I’m certain anyone can appreciate the pair of lungs this girl has.
