One Hit Wonders... V.2

13 Feb 2009, 18:36

To celebrate the return of well formatted lists to the journals, I made a list of One Hit Wonders with a little help of my friend Knirrie and's tags. • hdsander

Oh, thank you so much. Sinéad O'Connor got somehow lost from my first collection. Suzanne Vega's Tom's Diner was a #1 too, but I like to add Luka. No Doubt? They had at least 3 #1 hits: Don't Speak, Underneath It All, and Hey Baby. Gangsta's Paradise has to be added, indeed! Heehee, I tried to ignore the Boy-Bands, but as we have Hanson, *NSYNC may be included too. ;) Ms. Carey has more #1 hits than she can count! Brandi & Monica is a funny addition, I like that.

• hdsander

Hehe, The Cranberries' Zombie was in fact #1 in Australia, added!

Listening to this One Hit Wonder tag is really great! Thanks Dieter for tagged the songs!

This list shall not put down the artists! It is a collection of successful artists who are commonly known to the majority of people for one hit single. That is not meant in an unpleasant way! Some of my favorite artists are on this list (Joan Osborne, Meredith Brooks, Natalie Imbruglia, Suzanne Vega, Sinéad O'Connor, Sonique, Billie Myers, ...), I love them, own all their albums and cherish their music, but to the majority of people they are known just for one chart hit. I appreciate that, at least they are somewhat known to all those people. I listen to this playlist, I love to listen to this playlist because of all those artists' hit singles. I tagged all tracks, so you can listen to the tag radio and enjoy the songs including The Cranberries' only hit single "Zombie" (1994, #1 in Australia, France, and Germany).

New Young Pony Club-Ice Cream War-Low Rider The Flying Lizards-Money (That's What I Want) Steve Winwood - Valerie (tho he had 'higher love' too i guess) The Verve Pipe-The Freshman Lustra - Scotty doesn't know Tom Petty-Free Fallin' Shooter-Life's a Bitch Paula Cole-I Don't Want to Wait Peter Cetera-Glory of Love [Theme from The Karate Kid] (tho he was part of Chicago prior to trying to go solo) Gary Jules - Mad world ..there are more..

15 Feb 2009, 1:17
• hdsander

Steve Winwood: he had 5 #1's but curiously Valerie was none. :O Thx for participating, I'll check the other songs asap. :)

15 Feb 2009, 1:39
• hdsander

Added Low Rider, Glory of Love and Mad World. Paula Cole sadly never had any #1, Tom Petty a lot more than one. As the other artists are unknown to me, it will take a bit longer to check them.

Updated once again! Thank you bisa for all the additions. :)

Sixpence none the richer hit #1 in Australia with Kiss Me.

16 Feb 2009, 7:47
• MackTheKnifeAU2

Also, Savage Garden are not one-hit wonders. Truly Madly Deeply _and_ I Knew I Loved You both hit #1 in the US. Truly Madly Deeply might be their signature song, but it's not a one hit wonder.

16 Feb 2009, 7:54
• hdsander

Sixpence none the richer will be added with the next update. :)

Sorry Dieter, but I gotta disagree. Not only because I lovelovelove Suzanne Vega and not only because she had at least two #1 hits. But chart position just doesn't make a OHW for me! Take Suzanne, she's in the business for more than 20 years and besides the two "hits" Marlene on the wall is common musical heritag to any1 burn in the 70 or 80s. Not to mention her soundtrack contributions and the things she did for 80s female singer/songwriters. Come on... no One Hit Wonder!

16 Feb 2009, 10:36
• hdsander

What a poor list would remain if I remove all artists that had overall a successful career with lots of fans that don't like to see their beloved artist to be named a One Hit Wonder? I like Suzanne Vega a lot (see my comment above) and the discrepancy between the number of listeners to Luka and the rest of her work is definitely not that dramatic as at the other artists profile. I'll strike her out. I was tempted to include Janis Joplin (for "Me and Bobby McGee") or Jimi Hendrix (for "All Along the Watchtower") here, I can hear the scream! LOL

16 Feb 2009, 11:19
• thafranz

Well, this isn't about Suzanne Vega (ok, in the beginning it really was) but rather a question of definition. I think you included many artists who had just one #1, leaving other aspects of musical success (or quality) aside. For me, OHWs are those poor guys like Harpo or Mungo Jerry that have to sing their one song over and over again for years and decades. Of course that would considerably shorten your list. Quite impressive tho, are you a walking encyclopedia or do you have a house-elf who did the chart counting for you? ;)

It is very interesting to me to find out how many of my appreciated artist had just one #1 chart hit or, more surprising, none. Another indication how unpredictable the common taste or how influential the "chart-makers" are, like music TV, magazines and those horrible radio stations with their 40 songs repeated all day. I started with a playlist created from's existing tag and as I got more and more recommendations for new additions, I searched the wikipedia and OHW websites. There are many definitions of the OHW term, mine was having fun while gathering the songs, listening to the candidates and at last having an iTunes playlist for hearing all tracks again when I'm in the mood. Whenever the charts at an artist's profile look like this: ############################# ## # # ...I check if this might be an OHW. Wikipedia mostly reports the chart positions of the singles. May be that some people take the OWH-tag for an affront against their favorite artists. Finally it's all about the music, listening and having fun with this. :)

I sooo don't agree Wet Wet Wet having Love is All Around as a signature tune, they have been around since the 80's and have done tons of concerts and i certainly don't associate that song with them, theres too many to state that they were a 'one hit wonder' with Love is all around!!

16 Feb 2009, 14:21
• hdsander

I agree that Wet Wet Wet definitely had much more #1 hits (the songs is already [s]strikeout[/s]), but look at the number of scrobbles on their profile, Love is All Around is definitely the songs they are commonly known for.

Heaven Is a Halfpipe by OPM

17 Feb 2009, 23:43
• hdsander

I can't find any chart positions for this song, but it's a nice song, has far more scrobbles than the other songs of this band and it's featured on the UK edition of Now! That's what I call music. Vol.50. Let's add it. :)

The Connells - '74-'75 Gerry Rafferty - Baker Street

19 Feb 2009, 18:36
• hdsander

Both tunes are signature songs for the artists, but they never were #1 chart hits, even if Baker Street was very close to it.

19 Feb 2009, 18:50
• Skuzzie

Well, do they have to be? The Wikipedia-definition doesn't say anything about having a number one hit, it just has the be a hit.

"In the United States, "My Favourite Game" was the most commercially successful single from Gran Turismo. Peaking at number sixteen, it became the album's only single to enter the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks. In Sweden, it debuted at number twenty-one on the Swedish Top 100 Singles Chart and peaked at number three in November 1998. It spent at total of eighteen weeks in the chart.[5] In the United Kingdom, it debuted and peaked at number fourteen on the singles chart." The Cardigans are not a one hit wonder, and this proves it.
