Bret McCabe, Arts Editor at Baltimore's "City Paper," says "a voice this refined needs only to be wrapped in a ghost of a melody and arrangements as delicately ornate as flowers." Drawing influences from Soul, Gospel, Jazz, and Folk music, Hana Shabazz began singing at the young age of five. Her journey of bringing joy through music started at home. "My earliest memory is of me standing on the dining room table, singing Whitney Houston's "Greatest Love of All" into a hairbrush and making my mother smile." Growing up as a young girl in Baltimore, music was not merely her passion- it has always been her purpose. A fact that at times was even overlooked by her. She says, "I have made plans to choose many occupations in life, away from the music thing, however God always directed me back to the music. It's like it was inescapable."

A dream that began with her making loved ones smile and that made her stand out in her high school days, began to unfold and take form in her college years. In 2003, she began singing at legendary open mics in New York including Ashford and Simpson's "The Sugar Bar," "The Village Underground" and "St. Nick's Pub" where she was complimented on her vocal chops by Ashford & Simpson and blues & jazz musician Olu Dara. The enthusiastic and warm responses she received from audiences inspired her to keep going. An opportunity came to her later that year to become a backing vocalist for independent R&B vocalist Stanley James. In 2007, she performed as the opening act for the African American Heritage Festival Gospel Concert. She had the honor of performing once more at the 2008 African American Heritage Festival Gospel Extravaganza. During the summer of 2009, she reached the second round of auditions as a finalist on ninth season of American Idol after auditioning in front of renowned American Idol vocal coach Deborah Byrd. Later that year, she had the fortune of performing with the "Kim Poole Experience" as a backing vocalist. In Fall 2009, she began recording her first album as a solo artist.

She emerged as a promising new artist with her debut album "What I Feel" in July 2010. Brett McCabe defined this album as "eleven tracks of ethereal beauty." Most of the songs are composed, written and arranged by Diana Wharton Sennaar (original member of renowned group "Sweet Honey In The Rock"). "My hope is that this music will resonate with each listener. I want my musical journey to be an inspiration in people's lives." Hana Shabazz could not have been given a more suitable name at birth. In arabic, Hana means "joy" and that is exactly what her music does to the listener's ear. Her musical destiny is undeniably chosen.
