  • mewithoutYou (without you)

    25 Jun 2006, 21:52

So I saw mewithoutYou this past Thursday here in Columbus. It was at a venue called 'The Basement' and it was directly next door to an outdoor pavillion where Ani Difranco was performing. She was outside, it was rainy, mwY was inside, it was stuffy. mewithoutYou was amazing to say the least. This was the third time I have seen them and they keep getting better. They performed 2 songs from [A->B] Life, 6 songs from Catch for Us the Foxes and 6 brand new songs that they had never played lived before. I <3 mewithoutYou.

Unwed Sailor and The Working Title opened. I got there late and missed Unwed Sailor. The Working Title had good energy but there music sounded kind of bland. Comparable to Lovedrug on speed. After the show I listened to some of their tracks on PureVolume and the recordings don't seem to capture any energy from their show which is a shame because that was their good point.

In summation, mewithoutYou is the best band ever live. Ani Difranco was wet.

    ----

Earlier in the day, before I went to the show I made some chili. The chili included a habenero pepper. Which the juices from made it to my eyes. So my eyes were burning for about 15 minutes which delayed the chili and was partially why i was late for the show. Randomly I would rub my eye through the show and it would burn for a few seconds, never as bad as the first time though. Hott.

    ----

Oh, I've watched a couple more movies, I need to get up on that.

  • summer movie blast

    4 Jun 2006, 21:40

there are a few human creations that should be taken seriously. art is one of them, and therefore i am listening to the new single by paris hilton. yeah. its not awful, well maybe it is. ok its awful, but i'm going to finish it and listen to it again. it sounds like gwen stefani if she wasn't on performance-enhancing drugs.

anyhow, alongside music i like to persue film. so with my freetime this summer i will be viewing a number of movies that i probably should have already seen. i have been able to accrue these so far and will add to the list when i get more.

cutie the bomb, met her at a beauty salon/

disclaimer: 'top 5 songs ever' exists to give people an easy way of trying out new music. the songs listed can come from anywhere in the respective band's catalog and tend to be a good representation of that particular band's sound. as i listen to albums i try to pick out the track that sticks out to me the most and i stick it on a list and rank it according to the other 4. obviously, you may not agree that i chose the correct song for whatever album/band/whatever, so i don't need to hear in the comments that such and such song is better. naturally, it is limited (somewhat) to my taste in music and my music collection, but most tracks will be accessible and all will go down smooth every time.

  • Top 6 Bands to Listen to that are not Coldplay (Baby Let's Rock Edition)

    20 Feb 2006, 2:37

the news this week is that coldplay has announced they will be going on hiatus. some have speculated that this is the end of the band completely. rejoice, weep, fart, just do what you have to. at any rate, the band has made an indelible imprint on modern music...with very mediocre albums. and i'm not a complete coldplay hater. i think 'fix you' was one of last years great singles and 'the scientist' preceded it as a great song, but the truth is the albums those tracks were plucked from fall slightly below ordinary. chris martin recently revealed in an interview that he felt the band's lyrics (of which he is responsible for) were not that good. he promised better lyrics were coming and this got one's hopes up that the band might make some type of change to the same formulaic music that typified their first 3 albums. however, with this week's news it looks like we'll be waiting several years (if not longer) for this to happen. the truth of the matter is that coldplay's music is very very simple and gives the impression of sincerity, and yes that is the proper syntax. this is why the band has mass appeal. but, if you enjoi coldplay's sound then there isn't much you can do about your tastes. however, there are a lot of better bands out there (e.g. most bands). here is a list of 6 bands to check out that do similar things as coldplay but do them much better. and this list isn't to tide you over until britain's reigning chart toppers return to the studio. hopefully you can recognize there is better music out there for you to explore. feel free to add to this list as well (just dont say radiohead).

if you have a chance to check out the bonus band you really must, they broke up before they got big, but their only album (the grandeur that was rome) is truly stellar.

coldplay sounds like rookie versions of these bands, bitches.

    1. blur
    2. hope of the states
    3. elbow
    4. south (the us band, not the uk band)
    5. super furry animals
    6. doves

bonus band (defunct band from pittsburgh)

    1. monarch

"we blew the doors didn't we?"

disclaimer: 'top 5 songs ever' exists to give people an easy way of trying out new music. the songs listed are a specialty selection of that particular band's sound. specialty lists can be anything i conceive on a whim and thats usually what they are. but as guaranteed, they will go down smooth every time.
