  • 60,000th song.

Well, I missed 50,000, but I'm sure we'll all deal. #60,000 is by Suede! Who knew? Moving:

Shame on me! Well, I had the beast, you see.
And if he can take it, I can take him home with me.
Shame on her! She's a lovely little number.
And when we go lassoing, you get lassoed--all of you.
If you can take it, I can take it!
    And we're moving, so moving...
So we are a boy, we are a girl.
    So moving, so moving...

Shame on the girl--she's got a big black dog in her.
And while tough kids sing about tough kids, she just skins the world!
We'll never never play the harp, and we'll stick like sick on the stars,
And if you can take it, I can take these stones from my heart.
If you can take it, I can take it!

    And we're moving, so moving...
So we are a boy, we are a girl
    So moving, so moving...

If you can take it, I can take it, all of me
If you can take it, I can take it all!
If you can take it, I can take it, all of me
If you can take it, I can take it all!

Love this song, especially the last note that just goes up and up and up. It's so much fun. I'm also quite keen on the sexually ambiguous nature of "If he can take it, I can take him home with me." HOT.

Well, I've got a pattern going here, and there's no need to break it now. I actually forgot to look at last.fm for like, a month, and I just happened to think about how close I'd been to 40K when I last looked, so I checked and lo & behold, I just hit it!

The tune happens to be the top of a playlist I made called "extremely kitschy." The reason it's kitschy is because it's Iggy Pop. And it's my favorite Iggy Pop song! The Passenger from his 1977 album Lust For Life. Lyrics below!

    +++++

    I am the passenger
And I ride and I ride
I ride through the city's backside
I see the stars come out of the sky
Yeah, they're bright in a hollow sky
You know, it looks so good tonight

    I am the passenger
    I stay under glass
I look through my window so bright
I see the stars come out tonight
I see the bright and hollow sky
Over the city's a rip in the sky
    And everything looks good tonight

Singin' la la la-la la-la-la la
    La la la-la la-la-la la
    La la la-la la-la-la la la-la

    Get into the car
    We'll be the passenger
We'll ride through the city tonight
    See the city's ripped insides
We'll see the bright and hollow sky
We'll see the stars that shine so bright
The sky was made for us tonight

    Oh, the passenger
    How, how he rides
    Oh, the passenger
    He rides and he rides
    He looks through his window
    What does he see?
He sees the bright and hollow sky
He see the stars come out tonight
He sees the city's ripped backsides
He sees the winding ocean drive
And everything was made for you and me
All of it was made for you and me
'Cause it just belongs to you and me
So let's take a ride and see what's mine

    Singing...
    Oh, the passenger
    He rides and he rides
He sees things from under glass
He looks through his windows eye
He sees the things he knows are his
He sees the bright and hollow sky
He sees the city asleep at night
He sees the stars are out tonight
And all of it is yours and mine
And all of it is yours and mine
Oh, let's ride and ride and ride and ride...

Singin' la la la-la la-la-la la
    La la la-la la-la-la la...

I did not in any way choose this! Well, I knew 30,000 was coming up, and I made an unrelated playlist, but I forgot about it while I was playing the playlist. U2, "Last Night On Earth", off their 1997 album Pop.

    +++++

When the fuel goes down she stops her car
    Says it feels like freedom
She's back on the street where the sweet smells are

She feels the ground is giving way
But she thinks we're better off that way
The more you take the less you feel
The less you know the more you believe
The more you have, the more it takes today

You got to give it away
You got to give it away
You got to give it away
You got to give it away
You got to give it away
You got to give it away
Well, she don't care what it's worth
She's living like it's the last night on earth
    The last night on earth

She's not waiting on a savior to come
    Here eyes are closing
She's at the bus stop with the News Of The World
And the Sun, sun, here it comes
    She's not waiting for anyone

You got to give it away
You got to give it away
You got to give it away
You got to give it away
You got to give it away
You got to give it away
Well, she don't care what it's worth
She's living like it's the last night on earth
    The last night on earth

The clock tells her that time is slipping
    Slipping away, slip slide today
    Minute hands and seconds sticking
    Slipping away
There's something going on she might be missing
The world turns and we get dizzy
The world turns and we get dizzy
Is it spinning for you the way it’s spinning for me
    Slipping away

She's living, living next week now
You know she's going to pay it back somehow
She hasn't been to bed in a week
She'll be dead soon, then she'll sleep

You got to give it away
You got to give it away
You got to give it away
You got to give it away
You got to give it away
You got to give it away
    She already knows it hurts
She's living like it's the last night on earth
    The last night on earth
    Last night on earth
    Last night
    Yeah, yeah
    The last night

Incredible song! The band recorded the vocals on this track on the morning POP was due to be mixed, and the band had an hour to record them before someone else used the studio. Bono's voice was shot, so it was supplemented with backing vox from The Edge, which you can hear pretty clearly on the chorus. I adore it more for that little anecdote - the fatigue and desperation really suit the lyrics. God, I miss '90s U2.

    Asbestos by Suede.

    Written by Anderson/Codling
    Produced by Steve Osborne, 1999
    Song duration - 5:17
Track 6 on the album "Head Music"

Watching all the women shaking, slimming
    Walking down the roads again
Looking at the lovers under covers
Come in and let's be friends
Watching all the school girls breaking the rules
    Running round and having sex
Watching all the women shaking slimming
Come in and cash the cheques

The suburban girls, and they're making noise
And they're making eyes at suburban boys

Watching all the lovers under covers
    Watching all the roads bend
    Listening to Lulu, Amazulea
    Come in and let's pretend
Watching all the women shaking slimming
    Walking down the road again
Scheming like a school boy watching you boy
    Come in and let's pretend

The suburban girls, and they're making noise
And they're making eyes at suburban boys, at suburban boys, at suburban boys

The suburban girls, and they're making noise
and they're making eyes at suburban boys

The suburban girls, and they're making noise
and they're making eyes at suburban boys
at suburban boys, at suburban boys, at suburban boys.

    Awesome.
