Ampersand” is a few years old. It originally turned up on Ilkae’s Stained Glass Piñata, and was included on the excerpted MP3 release derived from it. At 5 minutes and 20 seconds, it’s practically an epic compared to, say, the 93-second “Dot Matrix Firefly”, and it fully exercises that length. There are no lazy loops here.

It starts out with a slow, simple theme, but Ilkae immediately starts varying bits of it, playing it against some ticky varispeed percussion. The rhythm is devilishly complicated, but, as it reveals in subsequent listens, is far from random. The beats drop out for a stretch around the 1:45 mark, when a second complementary melodic theme is introduced. The rhythm is reintroduced a few seconds later, along with the original theme, and the two resolve in breathtaking fashion around the 2:35 mark. It’s almost embarassingly beautiful.

I've never posted a journal entry at, so of course I start with a meme, arf arf.

    Your mainstream percentage!

Go through your top 10 artists and add up the total number of listeners. Divide the average by the number of Red Hot Chili Peppers fans (Red Hot Chili Peppers is - at the moment - the artist with the most listeners - Radiohead is second). That is your "mainstream percentage".

    My Top Ten

    1. Ilkae - 2821
    2. Broadcast - 28276
    3. Boards of Canada - 98437
    4. The Onion - 4665
    5. Isao Tomita - 789
    6. Trans AM - 7126
    7. Isan - 10400
    8. The Delgados - 19608
    9. Casino Versus Japan - 5658
    10. Engineers - 7180

That makes my average 18496, which is 6.14% of the Red Hot Chili Peppers' 301254.

    "Mainstream Percentage": 6.14%.
