I was just pondering how interesting it would be if Last.fm allowed me to donate 1 cent for each listen of a song directly to the band via their tracking. I know, I know… it sounds alarmingly pro-RIAA of me, but I was thinking specifically of the band A Minor Forest. If their songs were shorter (ala New Brutalism) they would easily be the most played band on my list. A Minor Forest weren't ever "popular" and probably never made much money off what I consider to be one of the best albums - Flemish Altruism: Constituent Parts 1993-1996. It hasn't left my CD changer in years and I burned a backup copy to transport out of the house so I wouldn't lose the original. Outside of Scrobbler tracking, it's easily the most listened to CD I have.
In my opinion Flemish Altruism is right up there with Spiderland or White Light/White Heat. These albums represent a mind blowingly expansive and cathartic listening experience that completely changes the way you think of and feel about music. Albums like this are so rare that I couldn't name more than about 5 of them, and I just gave away three.
