Thu 18 Jun – Twee as Fuck

despite the heat and compaction, the show was really good. crystal stilts def get my vote for best performance. new songs were great. the pains of being pure at heart were better than i thought they'd be but they ended kind of awkwardly when the front guy broke a string and they just called it a night. the sound was shockingly good considering that it is a concrete basement with super low ceilings.

Sat 28 Mar – Neil Halstead

Neil Halstead put on another amazing show last night at Joe's Pub. When Neil came through town in the fall he played at the Mercury Lounge, had two accompanying musicians (guitar/mandolin/backing vocals & bass) and played mostly material off of his new solo record. This time around he had a percussionist in addition to the two former players and his set pulled from all parts of his career, including playing two Slowdive songs in the encore (including Alison)! I love Neil and I can't wait for him to come to town again.

Tue 17 Feb – Fujiya & Miyagi, School of Seven Bells

School of Seven Bells played a great set from material off of their debut album Alpinisms. The album is amazing. I think they need to work on their live show but I certainly enjoyed it a lot. Vocals sounded great. Stage presence was kind of awkward or lifeless. They would really be a much more interesting live band if they had a live drummer and even perhaps a bass player. My overall feeling about the year is that it was neither a treasure trove nor a flop. I picked up new albums by many bands to whom I'd never listened.
