Cape Town born Ricardo Nunes, better known as DJ Azuhl, has become a household name on the South African Hip Hop and entertainment scene. He can be seen as a performer with stalwarts and pioneer Hip Hop outfit B.V.K (Brasse Vannie Kaap), a DJ with Africa’s iconic DJ group The Beat Bangaz (alongside Ready D, E-20 ) or filling out various dance floors across S.A as a party rocker. Known for specializing in Hip Hop, he also has the ability to move crowds across genres of music ranging from funk, soul, dub, house, rock and mashups. Armed with his extensive knowledge and understanding of deejaying, he has become one of the most sought out DJs for events ranging from corporate, promotional, launches, club to community based.

Being involved in the Hip Hop scene since the mid 80’s DJ Azuhl has progressed from a dancer and emcee to DJ and producer/remixer. His club appearances and performances are too many to mention ranging from legendary South African clubs like Galaxy (Cape Town), Cape to Cairo (Durban) to venues like De link and Pomp (Belgium). He has graced stages of all the major South African music festivals including; Up the Creek, KKNK and Oppiekoppie as well as major South African events such as North Sea Jazz festival, South African Music Conference, International Comedy Festival, Rand Easter Show, Redbull Street Style, Down Hill Extreme, Redbull Music Academy, Black August Tour, Alex Roll International Inline skating and many more.

This seasoned traveller also has an impressive resume of International performances such as; Pukkelpop Festival (Belgium), Hip Hop Logique (France), African Music Festival (Germany), U.N Habitat (Spain), Music Festival (Norway), Cultural Exchange Programme (Congo) and Dutch Exchange Tour 2007. He has also performed alongside international artists like Jay Z, Kanye West, Black Eyed Peas, Coolio, Twalib Kweli, Jeru the Damaja, DJ Kofi, Atrak, De La Soul, Coolio and many more.

In 2003 DJ Azuhl alongside Cape Town based Tyrone Da Silva (DJ Eazy) and Richard Bradstreet hosted, produced and presented their own radio show on U.C.T. radio called G.H.E.T.T.O. P.I.M.P show (Giving Healing Through Teaching One Principle's Improving Mental Position). The show ran for five years and in that time Faculty of Hip Hop (also known as Hip Hop Education South Africa) was born. The Faculty has since become one of South Africa leading NGO’s in the field of Hip Hop activism initiating events like the annual Youth Film Festival, park jams, exchange programs, 75 hours Music Marathon and other community based initiatives. The Faculty was instrumental in the success of South Africa’s first Afrikaans (one of the official South African languages) Hip Hop television series, “HIP HOP.” The show featured DJ Azuhl as presenter, co-producer and researcher alongside Mr. FAT and DJ Eazy. The show enjoyed 6 seasons of airing before the tragic death of Ashley Titus, aka Mr. FAT, in 2007. The Faculty has activities that DJ Azuhl oversees and is an extension for his broader vision for the role of what Hip Hop can play for the youths of South Africa. A draw card for B-boy events across South Africa, DJ Azuhl has also been working with Johannesburg based company, Wreckage Pro for over 5 years. This relationship has given rise to the success of two of South Africa’s biggest annual b-boy events; the 2ON2 Battles and Solo Pro’s.

Currently the official DJ for E.J Von Lyrik (one third of the legendary female outfit Godessa) and teaming up with Teba Shumba as The Dreaded Banga Sound System, DJ Azuhl one of the most sought after DJ’s. He has also teamed up with Falko Starr and DJ Eazy as part of Cape Town’s newest DJ collective, The Chief Rockers, who host a monthly event “Classics” at the legendary Mercury Live. Listeners Space is another monthly event on the Cape Town calendar hosted with Nadine Matthews by their company, Platform 7 Productions.

Already enjoying a cult status and strong following, he’s series of quality mixtapes and turntablist expertise makes DJ Azuhl one of the most versatile and skilled artists Africa has ever seen.
