    • Top 50 Albums of 2010

      21 Ene 2011, 20:46

      This year I think I listened to more albums than I ever have before. I've tried to actively check out anything I hear about that sounds interesting or that someone tells me about. New genres, new labels, there was some serious innovation.

      My biggest music crush of the year ended up being chillwave. Coming out of a year where I was listening to every dubstep single I could find, chillwave provided the perfect music for this past summer. Even now, listening to JJ or Washed Out takes me back to roof top parties and 90 degree days.

    • The Whiskey Festival

      5 Sep 2008, 4:43

      Sat 30 Aug – Bash on Wabash

      I know Mucca Pazza is good and all that, but I only went Sunday night to see William Elliott Whitmore and Murder by Death. I know the $5 went to benefit something, but as far as I am concerned this festival was about music and whiskey. Several people in the crowd were passing around various containers with drinks in them and I know I walked in with a pint of Jack in my back pocket. William Elliott was even gracious enough to hand his bottle off the stage at one point for those that were thirsty.

      I walked in just as they were introducing William and he took the stage looking quite a bit dapper than the last time I saw him (at SUA a couple years ago), but just as friendly. He had no problem talking with the crowd, a substantial part of which was already fairly intoxicated, and he played a lot of requests. He was spot on as always, stomping and getting everyone involved in either clapping or dancing. He went through most of my favorites, and a few of everyone else's as well. Johnny Law was requested over and over and he agreed each time to play it, and didn't let us down.

      He opened up early on with Lift My Jug (Song For Hub Cale) which is a goddamn great song for drinking. I was also ecstatic to hear him tackle Cold and Dead, a vocal only song, later in the set, where his voice held strong and carried everyone, including the voices that rose to join him. All in all a great set and I can't wait for him to come back in November.

      After him Murder By Death took the stage and the crowd packed in. I got the feeling that, while everyone loves William Elliott, they were there for MBD. Their set prompted more whiskey bottles to be brought out and at one point Adam even accepted a bottle handed to him from the crowd. After determining that "it smells like whiskey" he finished it off and started the next song.

      They played a surprising amount of new material, which I guess shouldn't be so surprising, considering that Red of Tooth and Claw isn't too old yet. I enjoyed it all, but I still find myself pulled much more towards their first two albums, as opposed to their last two. Some songs are just too damn good to matter though, like the sing along opener: Sometimes The Line Walks You, off of In Bocca Al Lupo. They also hit The Desert On Fire, a Masters In Reverse Psychology (two good whiskey songs), and even I'm Afraid of Who's Afraid Of Virginia Wolfe. Of course they hit the other major songs off the latest album, including Brother and Boy Decide.

      I was impressed with the setup of the festival. The stage was decent and the sound in particular was phenomenal, especially for a low budget outdoor event. Props to Reggie's for putting the show on.

      Murder By Death is a band that, no matter how many times I see them, or what they've just put out, always put on a good show. They are able to play such heavy songs, while still joking with the crowd and getting everyone into the show. In possibly the best part of the evening, Adam announced that when they return in November they will have their old keyboard/theramin player back with them and will be playing a ton of old material. After this I lost any doubt that I will be back out to see them again.

    • Silver Mt. Zion at Logan Square

      3 Jun 2008, 2:16

      Sat 31 May – A Silver Mt. Zion, The Dead Science, Josh Abrams

      Wow, I'm still not quite sure what to say about this show aside from: according to some vain list I keep, Silver Mt. Zion is the 294th band I have seen live and right now they are in contention for one of the most emotionally invested I've ever found myself at a show. The crowd was iffy, and yeah, I knew the cane girl and I was annoyed too. Too many drunks who couldn't keep their mouths shut, but the music. My god man.

      I walked in as Dead Science was closing out in an unimpressive fashion. Josh Abrams setup and really blew me away. They did one big, looping jam. It was interesting because they started out with a riff that no one seemed to like at all, and I was prepared to spend most of my time waiting for it to be over, but then something clicked and it took off. In parts it reminded me of Animal Collective or Battleswith a more jazz influence. It was also interesting to see the guitar and bass settling for being the rhythm section, while the drums were really the stunning part. Some of the work that man did on the cowbells had me unable to stop smiling and dancing.

      Silver Mt. Zion speaks for themselves. They handled the idiots in the crowd fairly well, although a few times I found myself facepalming and shaking my head at how ridiculous things were getting. Cut out all the banter and we might have gotten another song. Everything they played was perfect though and I want to track down the kid I saw with an H-4 recorder so I can get a copy of the show, a good portion of which I spent with my eyes closed, in my own world of god damn gorgeous music. Mountains Made of Steam had me near my knees and more than once I found my eyes slightly moist from the sheer beauty of the string section (bowed upright bass, 2 violins, cello).

      I must admit I had yet to get into 13 Blues for Thirteen Moons, but the two songs they played off of it were phenomenal, especially the first real track from the album.

      Also got to hear Microphones in the Trees. What more could I ask for? Well, I went in crossing my fingers for God Bless Our Dead Marines, Teddy Roosevelt's Guns, or Ring Them Bells (Freedom Has Come and Gone), but I was satisfied with their set choices.

      In the end I'm glad I left my bag at home, or I would have bought every piece of vinyl I don't already own, including the masterpiece of Horses in the Sky.

    • Failed Last.fm Quiz Turns Into An Amazing List Of Post-Rock

      23 Nov 2007, 23:55

      Lately I've been reflecting more on how I went from listening to two bands, to where I am now and my incredibly broad and reaching music tastes and knowledge. Thinking about essential albums that have helped shape my tastes. This seems like an interesting survey to see if I can find some new music, or at least see what type of stuff is on the fringes.

      The point is to start at your #1 overall top artist, don't include in the list, and then follow the similar artists steps to find out where you went 50 steps down the line. You were to use the 1st similar artist unless it was already on your list, if it was you used the second, if that was the third....you get the point...no repetition or you'd just go in circles.

      Alright so in reflection, this thing was incredibly flawed. Basically after #18 (damien rice) I was completely uninterested in any band that came up. Why? Because I got stuck in an infinite loop of britpop/rock, a genre that really doesn't interest me. Literally from 29-50 was just britpop and rock bands from Sussex.

      I'm going to do it again, only I'm going to start with a different band, and instead i'm going to click on the related artist that I like the most(no more than 20), until I am in a land of obscurity. This should provide many more relevant recommendations.

    • Review: Cursive Live with Make Believe and Little Brazil

      11 Jul 2006, 23:36

      Here is another review of mine that was published on punknews.org: http://punknews.org/review/5443

      It is impossible for me to describe just how incredible this show was to anyone who does not love Cursive or was not at the show itself, but I have seen over 200 bands live and Cursive, July 5th, was the best I have ever witnessed.

      But I’m not going to get ahead of myself.

      I had been under the impression that the Canopy Club, in the college town of Urbana, Illinois, was a larger venue and would be packed, however we arrived half an hour after doors and were able to walk in without waiting in line. I also noticed there were hardly any people standing by the stage, which was without the standard barricade and security, so I marched right up and took up some real estate front and center.

      The first band to come out was Little Brazil. I had never heard of them, but I was certainly glad I had arrived early enough to witness their show. This Omaha four-piece has some strong Saddle Creek ties, with members of The Good Life, Desaparecidos and Son, Ambulance, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see them signed to the label in the future. They had great stage presenece and what was there so far of the crowd loved it. I personally was involved with the dancing.

      After Little Brazil finished I had a chance to check out the merch and sadly Cursive only had two shirt designs that were both pretty plain, so I saved some money there.

      Next up was Chicago natives, Make Believe. The Kinsellas are kind of a legendary family in the Chicago indie music scene and it is no wonder why. They just keep making new bands and new interesting music. Tim has great stage presence and gets the crowd involved in different ways. Instead of getting people to clap, he knocks a mic stand into the crowd. Instead of asking for a circle pit, he just asks for a cigarette. Instead of handing the mic around, he just loops the cord around people’s neck and then walks away, pulling them with. He kinda seems goofy, but at the same time it helped to break down the barrier between fan and band. Of course, their music isn’t really the kind you clap, or mosh, or even dance to. Unfortunately, they didn’t receive as friendly a reception as Little Brazil. Tim was jeered a bit and someone threw a beer at him at one point, succeeding only in soaking a good chunk of the crowd. I was really disappointed to hear people shit-talking such a talented and interesting band. I mean…Nate Kinsella plays drums AND a wurlitzer…at the same time.

      By this time I was pretty much sober, but still ready to rock out. All night we had been predicting the set list, especially the opener. More than anything I was hoping they would open with "Big Bang." Although there had been some dancing, it seemed like most of the crowd was going to adopt the crossed arms pose, but luckily there was a sizable chunk around us who were ready to give everything to Tim, Matt, Clint, and Ted.

      I wasn’t really paying attention at first during the setup, except to note that there were mics with plastic shields so there would be horns. All of the sudden I hear someone in the crowd exclaim something along the lines of “THERE IS A FUCKING CELLO ON THE FUCKING STAGE.” Yep, no Gretta, but there was a female cellist there. Can it get any better? Cursive with a three-piece horn section, slide guitar, and a cello.

      When describing my favorite shows, the imagery that usually comes up is that of everyone dancing, with kids piled on each other’s backs and screaming every word. That’s exactly how this show was. And of all the songs Cursive could have opened with, they picked the best possible one: "Big Bang." As soon as the first notes of the song hit there was no going back. Everyone went nuts, singing every word along with Tim.

      They ripped through a set that was about 16 songs long, but Tim still spent a fair amount of time talking. After "Dorothy at 40," someone exclaimed that dreams do come true and Tim talked about how he used to be waiting tables and could never imagined being where he is today. He also talked a bit about Domestica and how strange it is that they have to consider it an “old” album and can no longer play nearly as much off of it as they used to, however they covered most of its high points. It is still tied as my favorite album of theirs.

      As the set went on, everyone kept getting more and more into it. There were even a few crowdsurfers, one of which actually made it to the stage, which prompted security to appear for the first time to stand at the corners.

      Tim explained that they were going to walk off the stage, have a shot, and if we cheered a bit they’d play some more. It all went according to plan, though I don’t know if he was serious about the shot. "A Gentleman Caller," and the show, ended with Tim reaching out, and holding onto a boy's hand, who was being held above the crowd, as the song died. It seemed epic at the time, although the moment that will stick out in my mind the most is "Sink to the Beat," dancing with everyone and everyone in the building screaming “LET IT BURST AND BLOOM!”

      Here is the set list. It’s not in order, but I think I have everything:

      * Big Bang (opener)
      * The Martyr
      * The Radiator Hums
      * Sink to the Beat
      * Bad Sects
      * Dorothy at 40
      * Dorothy Dreams of Tornados
      * Flag and Family
      * The Bitter End
      * Eight Light Minutes
      * Butcher the Song
      * The Recluse
      * Art Is Hard
      * Some Red-Handed Sleight of Hand
      * The Lament of Pretty Baby
      * A Gentleman Caller (Closer)
