Nah, haven't heard it. To be honest most modern indie music kind of pisses me off. It seems like there's too much emphasis on posturing and being "hip". That was always there (see: Pavement for the posturing part), but it's like they're in an arms race now. Plus there's an invasion of these girly-man bands like Grizzly Bear, The Decemberists, The Antlers (ugh), etc. that I can't stand. Serious lack of testosterone there. Anyways, sorry for the rant - I'll still probably check out a song or two on YouTube!

...That should be to "to fit their hypothesis", obviously.

Yeah, tell me about it. Anthropogenic global warming is all the rage right now amongst the useful idiots at colleges. I'm sure you've heard of Climategate by now. It really is quite damning. If you look deeper into the stuff that was leaked, it shows pretty much with 100% certainty that they faked data to fight their hypothesis that temperatures are going up (and evil humans are causing it). That's no small problem, considering that institute is the main supplier of information on "global warming" to the United Nations. Apart from being based on faulty (and fraudulent) "science", their proposed solutions make no sense. We can't even get China (the world's #1 polluter) to go along with it, which should be expected; the only way to reduce emissions, all else equal, is to reduce economic activity! That's going to reduce standard of living much more than a small temperature increase - which is assuming we're causing it in the first place. Temperatures didn't even rise this decade.

By the way, I'm curious, how bad is the "diversity" worship and PCness at your college? Aside from the usual emphasis on the "problems" (real or imagined) of the usual victim groups (women, minorities, gays), the unequal extension of college resources (scholarships, grants, women's centers but no men's centers), etc.? How much do they go above and beyond to shove it in your face, and how much of the student body buys into it? Do they make you feel out of place as a white guy? Your area of the country seems like one of the very worst in swallowing the PC kool-aid, unfortunately.

Check this out: http://pitchfork.com/news/37263-the-2009-pitchfork-readers-poll/ I filled that out. I like surveys. My top five songs of 2009, IIRC: #1 Fragile Tension by Depeche Mode; #2 Uprising by Muse; #3 Out of the Blue by Julian Casablancas; #4 Growls Garden by Clark; #5 3 A.M. by Eminem. Btw, check out my journal, I made a list of my top albums of the year. (Haven't heard AC's yet, and Julian Casablancas may have a place as a runner's up at least, but I can always change it later.)

You should check out the band Faith No More. Mike Patton (their singer) is a really talented guy. Their compilation, Who Cares a Lot?, is a good introduction. They're basically like an alternative metal band, you've probably heard at least one or two songs.

I can't blame you about wanting to leave that state. I want to leave mine as well some time (NJ). Regarding high school... even I feel into the slacker thing for my first two years. I think part of the problem is our schools aren't serving boys very well. If they act like... boys, they get medicated. I've seen that within our own family. I don't know about you, but my favorite teachers were fellow dudes. We need male role models, but the education system is also unfriendly to male teachers. I considered the teacher route myself, but ruled it out for that reason. Unfortunately I think we should probably be experimenting with sex segregated schools, but that's another issue. Won't be accepted because a lot of people like the current status quo where females do better, and it also means we have to accept males and females are different. The horror!

Anyways, it is what it is. It's certainly not the path towards a traditional society, though; if you look at history, when female promiscuity is let loose and fathers are devalued (as is certainly now the case in our culture, legally and otherwise), you get declining male investment in family and society. The few matriarchies that have existed have always been backwards and have characteristically uninvolved males for this reason.
