Mixtape for September: Sadness and Comfort

2 Sep 2007, 4:56

For tkyd and anyone else interested:

Get out your hanky, folks, cause this mix is a tear-jerker. At least, I kept crying while I made it.

1. Lágrimas Negras (Conjunto Céspedes)

2. Making Pies (Patty Griffin)

3. No Time To Cry (Iris DeMent)

4. I Think It's Going To Rain Today (Randy Newman)

5. The High Road (Bettye Lavette)

6. Mercy Now (Mary Gauthier)

7. Help a Man (Robin Holcomb)

8. Keep Me In Your Heart (Warren Zevon)

9. Will You Miss Me (The Red Clay Ramblers)

10. Acony Bell (Gillian Welch)

11. To Live Is To Fly (Townes Van Zandt)

I know, I know, once more it's very folk-heavy, which I said I wouldn't do, but then the theme was announced, and, well, the saddest songs I know are folk songs.

Download it here: Sadness and Comfort mix. Lyrics are included (some transcribed by yours truly!).

Hope you find it worth a listen.

I really like your mixtape (it got 4 stars). I'm unhappy to have missed your August mix. While listening to the mix and browsing your charts, I got the idea, you would like the compilations of my all time mixtape hero: Spinola from the YOUR MUSICLAND blog. Have a look at that site and watch out for Music for quiet and rainy days. Especially the mixes Guitar and voices for rainy days., Piano, keyboards and voice. and From Lisbon to Istanbul. A musical journey. are my favourites. Furthermore (in good faith) I'll tell you, that your mp3 songs don't have valid mp3-tags and must be fixed after importing them. To avoid such inconveniences you should select the songs you like to give away, click on ADVANCED > ID3 TAGS > ID3 TAG VERSION, set it to V2.4 and let it go. That way you can be sure all of the tags iTunes is displaying are actually written to the corresponding files... Don't blame me for that, I'm a nerd. Impatiently awaiting you October mix...

I will check out your recommendations, I'm very interested. And also your top artists. Since Brandi Carlile is your top artist, I know you have good taste. Let me know if you ever make your own mix, too. Glad you liked the mix, wish I had room to store more than one month at a time ;-( My last one wasn't that good, it was my first mix ever and it was way too long and sloppy. And thanks for the heads up about the tags. I'll look into it. Glad to have you helping me keep on track! You've already been a friend to me, so I'm sending you a friend request. Have a great musical day!

I think Conjunto Céspedes and Mary Gauthier are good recommendations, I'll have a closer look to them.
