I've been attending more concerts lately and I'm getting old so I've gotta keep track somewhere outside my brain. These are people I'm not ashamed to have seen perform in person:

    David Bowie
    Devo
    Silver Apples
    The Zombies
    Proton Pigeon
    Nessie & Her Beard
    MC Y.T.
    Stan Ridgway
    The Residents
    James Rabbit
    Van Dyke Parks
    Jimmy Scott

I reckon I should get out more.

While this website no longer offers the exciting possibilities of mass exposure for fledgling artists it did only a year ago, you faithfuls who still manage to find this blog certainly deserve to hear the very latest in contemporary music. Orchestral Colour Records has three new releases this summer, each with a free track available on last.fm. Partake of them!

  • Smithsonian Folkways sucks!

    31 Mar 2008, 10:24

I really do appreciate your attempt to preserve all of Earth's cultures for eternity (although shades of Brainiac make me suspicious of your ultimate goal).

But would it have been so difficult to write down some of the names of the people you recorded?

If I scrobbled them all to "Smithsonian Folkways" it would be like rewarding you for your lameness, and you'd get way too high on my charts.

So for now I'm attributing all these recordings to their producers, but if Henry Cowell starts racing up my charts I'll come after you.

  • My mom sucks!

    25 Mar 2008, 7:54

so my mother takes it personally that i disapprove of some of the music she listens to. today she asked me if i still liked The Beatles, and i said sure, but i prefer The Beach Boys. she responded, "but the Beatles are more diverse! the Beach Boys just do happy surf songs."

    au contraire!

i'm making her a mix to showcase their evolution into the most sophisticated pop band of all time. it is, at the time of my writing this, still in progress because i'm fresh out of CD-Rs.

i'd like to include some Love You, but there simply isn't room, and Surf's Up is a nice ending.

  • Foreigners suck!

    14 Ene 2008, 10:49

I've had this profile for so long, and I listen to such an exorbitant amount of music, that I can say the following with great confidence: My top 50 artists represent the greatest musicians of all places and times.

With that out of the way, I'd like to make the observation that over half of these artists are American (or United Statesian, if you prefer). Also, the vast majority of them are white, anglophone, male, presumably heterosexual, and non-Jewish.

    Just a thought.

    America:

    The Beach Boys
    Scott Walker
    The Residents
    Tiny Tim
    Laurie Anderson
    Devo
    Sparks
    R. Stevie Moore
    Raymond Scott
    The Walker Brothers
    Bruce Haack
    Daniel Johnston
    Roy Orbison
    Prince
    Bernard Herrmann
    Del Shannon
    The Three Suns
    Van Dyke Parks
Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band
    Ferrante & Teicher
    Les Baxter
    Martin Denny
    Jan & Dean
    Tim Buckley
    The Mills Brothers
    Todd Rundgren

    England:

    David Bowie
    Brian Eno
    Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark
    The Legendary Pink Dots
    Joe Meek
    The Human League
    Gary Numan
    Soft Cell
    Kate Bush
    Fad Gadget
    Japan
    Depeche Mode

    Germany:

  • Soundtracks that suck.

    14 Dic 2007, 10:50

because the people who listen to them are retarded and scrobble one track each for artists they never bother looking into.

thanks for fucking up the charts for Scott Walker, Neu!, Nico, Mark Mothersbaugh, Bernard Herrmann, Nancy Sinatra, Arthur Lyman, Dick Dale, and a bunch of people i don't care about.

    the prime culprits:

The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou
    The Royal Tenenbaums
    OST Kill Bill
    Pulp Fiction
    Ocean's Eleven

hmm, i wonder if there's any correlation between watching bad movies and being an ignorant, lazy music fan.
