• Yeezus Review

    19 Jun 2013, 6:20

So I'm going to try to keep this review sweet and short, but for me Yeezus was not as great as I'd thought it would be. For the longest time Kanye West has been disappointing me with the music he has released over the past couple of years since Watch The Throne I felt like he was weak lyrically and Jay-Z out shined him on that project and even with Cruel Summer the songs he did were sub par with weak lyrics yet again that didn't standout from anyone else, What my problem was with Yeezus is that I felt like the lyrics on the album were weak and I felt like he was way too into this idea of creating something new and different that he went so overboard not crafting the lyrics etc. I mean don't get me wrong but I love when artist do take chances and go there mentally but when I don't feel like I'm be challenged it's just not working. When you are on such a higher level than most rappers I expect so much more from you. Maybe it's just me but when I was listening to the album I keep thinking of Kid Cudi and his rock hip hip sound like with Man on The Moon 2, Wizrd and Indicud, but know one was here for his direction of music. It just didn't seem like anything new or different to me that's all.

  • Camp

It is finally here! The long awaited album Camp from Childish Gambino. First of all I would like to say how proud I am for this guy and how far he has come. Like who would have thought that this comedian/actor Donald Glover would be successful rapper that people actually take seriously in hip-hop. I remember the first time I listened to his music , it through me off a bit because what I heard was something different than what other rappers were doing at the time. Before the album came out I listened to it a couple of times on NPR and the first time (not second or third) did I know that he made it and put together a wonderfully made album. The song that I love the most is All The Shine, the singing, orchestra sample and lyrics is genius. Why this album works is because he mixes the hard and soft songs like Backpackers catering to different listeners in away that anyone could love the album. The concept for the album is genius too if you listen to it all the way through you hear the story about a boy and his experience at camp. You come to know this because on the last song That Power he tells a short story that kinda sums the album up and about how he had a thing crush on this girl and what happened when he spilled his feelings out to her and how that situation affected him in the years to come. To me Camp is the best hip-hop album of 2011 and was smartly made. I have been listening to this album all week since it released on Tuesday because it is just that good and I never listening to albums like this so I would recommend people listen to him now because this guy is not one to sleep on!
  • Cole World: The Sideline Story

I am a huge J. Cole fan and was super excited about this project since this is his first album Cole World: The Sideline Story. I don't find any disappointments with the album whatsoever. My favorite songs are Can't Get Enough, Lights Please, Mr. Nice Watch, In The Morning, Never Told and Work Out. When I listen to Lost Ones I think Nas for some reason don't know why but I do maybe because he's telling a serious story. He can finally shut them haters up talking about him cause of the lack of album for some time.
  • Anticipating albums...

Jay-Z & Kanye West: Watch The Throne- Since hearing the song "Otis" I think this is going to be on of the best collab hip-hop albums in a long time.

Wale: Ambition- I have been waiting awhile for the DC native to drop a new album and I feel like this could be a good project. Attention Deficit (I think) was underrated album of 2009.

Donald Glover AKA Chilidish Gambino: Camp: After listening to all of his mixtapes and what not this dude is someone to watch out for. Like his punch lines are sick for a comedian/actor you would have never seen it coming. He said he's been working on his album due to be released in September which I hope is really true.

    J. Cole: Cole World: The Sideline Story- Out of all the albums set to drop this fall this is the one I'm ready for. Not everyone was feeling the first single 'Work Out' from the album, but I love it I just wish it could have been better promotion behind it like a lot of other artist. Heard he was to release a mixtape before the album release, but forget the tapes I want the album.

Mac Miller: Blue Slide Park- At first when I seen this kid around the internet I past him and didn't want to get into him, but once he released Best Day Ever mixtape tape came out I became a new fan. So I am hoping this album is worth the wait.

Adele album 21 is a great body of work. Should be nominated for a Grammy. My favorite songs are "Rolling In The Deep" & Set Fire To The Rain. I really love "Set Fire To The Rain", I think that this would be a good song for her second single if not already.

Esperanza Spalding won a Grammy tonight for best New Artist beating Justin Bieber and Drake. I wish I would have listened to her music before watching the Grammys because she is amazing. I love Jazz music a lot and that is her sound. She plays the base and did that on the Grammys. Kinda makes me miss playing the Violin. I don't see why so many people were mad. She is good and deserved to win.
