Favourite christmas and winter songs and albums

First sunday in advent is coming near, so I thought it was time to do my yearly "Christmas"-Playlist in iTunes. That's why I thought about my favourite christmas and winter music, which I want to share now.

The Classics

Mariah Carey - Merry Christmas:
One of the best christmas albums ever recorded, including many classics as well as famous "All I Want for Christmas Is You". Most other records by female singers like Christina Aguilera, Britney Spears and so on have nothing on it. If you want to take a listen, don't confuse it with Mariah's second holiday record Merry Christmas II You - that one's pretty bad.

The Supremes - Merry Christmas:
Very catchy and festive at the same time. Everyone who loves the Supremes will love this record.

The EPs

A Fine Frenzy - Oh Blue Christmas:
Mixing the style of A Fine Frenzy with the christmas spirit just works out very well. This record is outstanding because it doesn't have the classcis on it one hears over and over every year but new, self-written songs.

Glasvegas - A Snowflake Fell (And It Felt Like A Kiss):
That's one for those who like a little more rock and indie music for the holiday season. This one includes self-written songs as well.

KT Tunstall - Have Yourself A Very KT Christmas:
This one has some well-knows christmas music on it, but in the style of Ms Tunstall it gets even better. this one's including "Mele Kalikimaka (Christmas In Hawaii)" and "Fairytale Of New York", which - in KT's version - is probably one of my most favourite christmas songs of all time.

Michael Bublé - Let It Snow!:
Very nice record in the style of the christmas records by Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Sammy Davis, Jr.. Including famous songs like "Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snow" and "I'll Be Home for Christmas".

The German One

Locas In Love - Winter:
I was very surprised when I discovered this one. German indie band Locas in Love does a whole album on winter time and it sounds great. Every song on this record is self-written.

The Compilations

The Hotel Café presents... Winter Songs:
This one has been my favourite christmas album of last year. It includes some of the best female artists in the world (Ingrid Michaelson, Sara Bareilles, Brandi Carlile, Lenka, Alice Smith, Katy Perry, Colbie Caillat, Catherine Feeny, Kate Havnevik, Priscilla Ahn, Meiko, Holly Conlan, Fiona Apple and Nicole Atkins) and traditional christmas songs as well as new ones.

A Christmas Gift for You From Phil Spector:
Another very catchy christmas record because it includes artists like
Darlene Love, The Ronettes, The Crystals and Bob B. Soxx and The Blue Jeans performing famous songs like "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus" and "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town".

Other albums

The Puppini Sisters - Christmas With The Puppini Sisters:
A record that has been released this year but sounds like it's already fifty years old. It's a mixture between Motown and The Andrew Sisters including well-known songs like "Last Christmas" and "Winter Wonderland".

The Kelly Family - Christmas for All:
This one has been my favourite christmas record during my childhood so I love listening to it from time to time nowadays as well. It includes christmas carols from different countries ("Chi-qui-rri-tin (A Medley of Spanish Christmas Songs)" and "White Christmas") as well as other songs ("We Are the World" and "Who'll Come With Me (David's Song)").

Sarah McLachlan - Wintersong:
Probably the most quite and beautiful record in this list, including the most beautiful winter song "River" as well as many others (eg. "What Child Is This? (Greensleeves)", "The First Noel / Mary Mary and "Wintersong").

The songs

ABBA - "Happy New Year"
Banaroo - "Coming Home For Christmas"
Band Aid - "Do They Know It's Christmas?"
Britney Spears - "My Only Wish (This Year)"
Carola - "Jul, jul strålande jul"
Destiny's Child - "8 Days of Christmas"
Gotthilf Fischer und seine Chöre - "Macht hoch die Tür, die Tor macht weit"
Kate Winslet - "What If"
Katie Melua - "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas"
Klee & The Wedding Present - "Holly Jolly Hollywood"
Loona - "Hijo De La Luna"
The Pussycat Dolls - "Santa Baby"
Rolf und seine Freunde - "In der Weihnachtsbäckerei"
Wham! - Last Christmas

Banaroo? *lol* But the album by A Fine Frenzy sounds interesting. Sarah McLachlan's winter album is really good, I agree. I don't know the others... but KT Tunstall's Christmas songs should be nice, I guess.

Mariah Carey is exactly what I try to avoid for the holiday season. Found some lovely indie versions last year (2010) and the "Glee" Christmas album was very camp. But thanks for this list which will be my Christmas 2011 - Dean Martin <3
