ATCQ Top 10 Tracks

16 Nov 2008, 20:42

In honour of Q-Tip finally putting a record out I thought I'd try and write down my top ten A Tribe Called Quest songs. In order. Damn.

One of my favourite groups ever, who I must have spent as many hours listening to as any other band. Not easy to whittle down to just ten.

10. Mr. Muhammad
9. We Can Get Down
8. Butter
7. Scenario
6. Buggin' Out
5. Can I Kick it (Spirit Mix)
4. Youthful Expression
3. Lyrics to Go
2. If the Papes Come (remix)
1. Vibes and Stuff

Vibes and Stuff picks itself. Its always been my favourite Tribe track or at least it has been since if came out. Before that it was If the Papes Come (remix) so at least I've been consistent.

For the rest I just had to go on which tracks I'm the most hyped to hear when they come on. Looking at the list its a lot of the bassier tracks but I don't tend to think of Tribe having bass like that. At least not compared to EPMD or someone like that. For me, there's only a handful of rap acts that could put up a top ten on this level. I didn't even include Award Tour...

There's no Scenario (remix), there's no Oh My God or Check the Rhime. Not for me at least. Not in my top ten.

What would you have? What wouldn't you have?

man, check the rhime is number one for me. other than that I don't know if I care about tribe enough to argue much. Now let's do Outkast top 10 and see how many we agree on? Do it top of the dome with no "research"!

Great list. You can't go wrong with any of the tracks you've named. After so many years of spinning Quest, I've gravitated towards the lighter feeling joints where there's a just kicking it vibe. For the last couple years, "Lyrics To Go" has bubbled to the top. Plus that track activates some great memories. "Verses From The Abstract" and "Keep It Rollin'" are along the same lines -- such fun songs. The tracks you've named from the first album are great -- I'd probably give the edge to "Push It Along" and "After Hours". From the post-Marauders albums, I'd give "Keeping It Moving" a nod. "Vibes And Stuff" is a near perfect hip hop song, so no argument there. Too much good -- that's way I stopped trying to do definitive lists. So props to you for trying. Oh yeah, and I can't forget "Steve Biko (Stir It Up)"...

I left "After Hours" off... damn. See, hard. ILL, I'll try an Outkast list for you but I'm not doing it without thinking. Thinking about lists is the fun part. I think I know what will be one and two but the rest is tough.

The cuts on "We Can Get Down" are all-timers and loving "Butter" means you admit that Phife is more likeable than Tip :-) Did you get those Scenario demo versions that posted? Pretty mind expanding.

What hits you about "If The Papes Come (Remix)" to get it to #2?

oooh loads. Love the jazz ride sample. You don't get much jazz ride sampled in Hiphop. You can still sort of hear the triplet getting cut off at the end of the loop. The bass is great. It's got that really early Q-Tip on it. He sounds like he does on "The Promo" and "In Time". I'd bet good money that it was recorded before most of the album. I love the verse that starts "If the papes come, yo yo I won't riff...". It's just what a Tip track should be, all flow and voice and not too much worry about lyrics. It's got mixed in with the all the acid jazz stuff coming out back then, which gave it a bad name, but really it was and is, the shit. Also the little Slick Rick tribute bit on the beginning is excellent.
