When I look at the music I've been listening to over the last half year or so, I feel like I've stolen this priceless and complex Kung Fu manuscript that I don't actually have the educational foundation to genuinely understand, but nobody's come along with the chops to kick my ass yet.

What the fuck do I really know about the theory that went into Schoenberg? What separates me from the BOORISH Western audiences that lump 灰野敬二, Boredoms, Merzbow, High Rise, Zeni Geva, Boris, ACID MOTHERS TEMPLE & THE MELTING PARAISO U.F.O. etc together into a "scene"? How the fuck does one approach Derek Bailey at all?

Yeah, I compared my uncomfortable and sudden surge of self doubt to a character from Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. Sue me.

In other news, my friend Clara Engel seems to have quite a few appreciators throughout Europe; I recently found the profile of a young gent from Poland who listens to her more than I do. While I was on my way home from Sheridan the other day (GO Train rides are great), I closed my eyes, and pretended I'd never heard her music before. It was a really interesting experience to re-imagine Clara's voice as one that I'd never heard in conversation, but rather belonged to some Torontonian enigma (I imagined I was in Poland too). It sounded fantastic.
It's great when you can train yourself to hear something very familiar to you as if it were the first time.
