• An unfortunate announcement.. You will be missed, Lunar Aurora.

    25 Nov 2012, 20:46

I came late to the "party", when it came to knowing that one of my favorite bands had disbanded, for a second time(or the first, if you count the other one as a hiatus): Lunar Aurora.
After their critically acclaimed album, "Andacht" was released, the band had parted ways as well, so I figured anyone meant their "pause" while they were actually talking of a recent split-up.
One of the most magnificent gems of the German Black Metal-scene have closed the curtains.
But while it saddens me beyond measure, they have left a very impressive legacy that most atmospheric black metal acts would be jealous of; from the blistering riffing of Mond, the malevolent rollercoaster called Of Stargates and Bloodstained Spheres, the unstoppable beast they named Andacht and the mythical, ravenous atmosphere of Hoagascht(their farewell gesture, and my personal favorite for 2012, which will not likely be put from its "number one socket"), these legendary musicians have never failed to deliver.

While all of this seems a bit "grim"(I am so funny), I believe it is a sign of maturity and personal awareness that a band can decide to call it quits before entering the "autumn of its existence".

I hope the artists will continue to baffle us with their creations, in whatever form. For appreciators of the art of illustration, I strongly suggest that you look up Aran(Benjamin König)'s work: Sperber Illustrationen, and of course, for those who do not know it yet, his solo-project: Trist(Ger).

  • The first black metal record of the year that blew me away.

    6 Mar 2012, 20:46

    Hoagascht by Lunar Aurora.

From the foreboding preludium called Im Gartn, unusual structure of Nachteule, the striking ambiance of Sterna and Beagliachda, robust sound of Habergoass, sheer power of Wedaleichtn, epic atmosphere of Geisterwoid, all the way to the final, transcendental tones of Reng, we are carried away through the otherwordly experience this magnificent, brand new album has to offer.

Definitely no need to say anything else, let the music do what it does best: tell a story. A good one.

  • Why both the Blut Aus Nord albums released this year kick so much ass.

    18 Dic 2011, 2:07

I've heard a lot of good music from this year (Dornenreich's "Flammentriebe", Circle of Ouroborus's "Armon Keitaalla", Midnight Odyssey's "Funerals From the Astral Sphere", Oskoreien's selftitled album, etc.), but the two first bodies of art that are to become two-third of the 777-trilogy(Sect(s) / The Desanctification) definitely earn a spot among them.
Man, how on earth are you able to write material so diverse, compelling, weird and majestic(in a sense), at the same time.
It still boggles my mind, after dozens of listening sessions.

The only thing left to say is: let's hope 777-Cosmosophy will blow me away like these two monsters of albums did.

  • Judgement Day? My ass.

Still no earthquake, roaring thunder and meteors plummeting from the sky, delusional cross-kneelers..

One sentence is sufficient: this album is fucking great.

  • Urfaust - Der Freiwillige Bettler. The Dutch lyrics translated!

    15 Abr 2011, 11:38

Since the newest album of Urfaust came out, late 2010, non-Dutch speaking metalheads have wondered what the lyrics mean that came with the LP editions of the album.
Since Dutch isn't exactly an easy language to learn for foreigners(even more if it's just to read those lyrics..), I have translated the lyrics of all the seven songs for those interested.
Some sentences might look a bit awkward, but I did not want to stray too much from the actual meaning of the songs.
The lyrics don't articulate and in most cases, don not exactly fit together anymore(they do in Dutch).

    Here you go!

    -1-

The Thorn of Abundance drowns me in the nectar of the ultimate evil,
in which the human dies and the demon awakens.
Between demolished graves and burned crosses at gods field,
as of where the Evil Eye tells the future.
    No salvation visible,
the holy water undrinkable to those with a soul,
that has not been woven in a web of hell.
The Dark One approaches me with the Chalice of Oblivion,
of which I drink and makes me invincible.
If I leave the mercy of mankind to the Devilish Word,
lee will die at the end of the rainbow.
No treasure for you as promised,
just a deep wound in the cosmos.
When the magic dies with you,
and those that lick the ass of god,
hope their enemy does not inherit this power.

    -2-

Priest, behold my mount, the Wind of Death,
    that leaves rotting ruins.
Priest, behold my mantle, the mantle full of mould,
    that makes the angels puke.
Priest, behold my ring, the Eye of Lucifer,
that burns you to the cross.
Priest, see my face and feel that god surrenders,
    to blackened light.
Priest, feel my poisonous dagger in your heart,
because of which your god leaves you,
and you gladly embrace me with open arms.

    I am now your Master,
    let us kill.

    -3-

With my fists I wipe the smirk off your face,
    pull the chains tighter.
    Screaming in inhuman harmony,
below the surface lies your existence.
One who kneels and confesses in front of the grave of his work,
    architecture through weapons and loneliness.
    He who slits his wrists,
before the silence of the church.
    Regret for a murder,
that brought fertility into the green realm.
    For you a grave,
    deep in the sea, overboard.
    No voice heard,
as my goal is also preacher.

    -4-

I want to see gold or I end your life.
    Instead of gods prediction,
eternal blue sky and open field.
    There I lay, stripped bare,
by spite and hatred the last bell rings.
    When I'm inprisoned,
and create a universe within two hands.
    Finally all of us.
Monks cloth in a chest and I dance around you,
and call forth a shadow against the graves.
    The moon paints me black,
as I yank Maria from your grave.
He nails break when the cross cracks,
and the tomb on which I stand awakens.
    Opens her depth.

    -5-

When the sledgehammer turns the boulders to rubble,
and when your carcass gleams in the light of night.
    When I take your bones,
    after I killed you.
The black hen keeled where the black cat hangs,
there the spirits follow my word and will.
Where lust replaces love and booze isn't spilt.
The shadow offers me a chalice,
    in which I drown myself.
For me and the anger to sink,
    and all life to wither.

    -6-

The aesthetic Light, the primordial source of life,
    disappears in the water's surface.
Cold shadows are but empty sorcery,
Shimmers of nightly wonder freeze the magic arts.
The merged with the gifts of the Gods,
they show their mantles made of star silk.
    There, crystals only reflect darkness,
cursed are the stones that took my real power.
The path through the night vanished and the traces are erased,
Wisdom will create wonders on these paths.
    Everything is frozen,
    light shines no more.
Everything has risen above the fields of consciousness,
    beyond the boundaries of immortality.

    -7-

Through sorrowful streams and forgotten wells of wounds,
I will search for the keys that will open hidden gates for me.
Bring me the visions of past days.
Old, forgotten wells and clouds of fog,
the images race through my blood like a black spell.
For the pure souls, gates will open,
whose keys and powers lie in the faint light of the stars.
    The glimmer of nightly wonder,
    old crystals guide the way.
An age will pass like a shadow's whispering.
Where the paths go will only be seen,
through the eyes of a frozen, heavenly realm and her eternal coldness.
The aesthetic Light will dissolve into fog,
the shadow of her spirit will shine over the borders of infinity.
    The limitlessness,
that hides behind the mortality of entities.

  • Les Discrets IS NOT Shoegaze.

    19 Mar 2011, 2:34

    Just had to vent this.

It's incredibly frustrating to see the shoutbox jammed with people who think it's "one of them Shoegaze-bands!".
Alcest has Shoegaze traits, indeed. Lantlôs does not, the new Drudkh does not, and certainly Les Discrets does not. Stop pretending to listen to a genre the bands you sum up aren't a part of.
Not every band signed with Prophecy Prod. is Shoegaze just because Alcest is..
Even Fursy(the mastermind behind the project) has stated he doesn't get why people tag Les Discrets as "Shoegaze"(and to a lesser extent, why some seem to think it's "(Black) Metal").

I even had to change it's Wikipedia page, because if you gave me one Euro for everytime it said "Shoegaze" I could buy the Playboy Mansion.
Les Discrets is post-rock with a large acoustic element(and of course, great music!).

If you want Shoegaze, listen to My Bloody Valentine(don't know a lot more, I'm not that into it.)

  • New positive musical impressions of this year!(January - medio March)

    16 Mar 2010, 23:32

    Concerts:
Dornenreich (Paganfest 2010 Extended Show. @ 013, Tilburg(NL)) - Definitely on top. What a great fucking show... The signature-ambiance that Dornenreich possesses on their albums was even present while performing live, which I think is a very big achievement. An accoustic song(Freitanz) to begin with was a perfect intro, and in addition, they played a lot of Dornenreich-black metal classics like "Trauerbrandung" and "Ich Bin Aus Mir". If they would've had more time, they'd probably have played another accoustic song serving as an intermezzo(merely a thought), but they just had fortyfive minutes to perform. That is the only complaint I can come up with, and it's not even something the band would've been capable of changing.. Also finally have had the chance to buy myself a nice Dornenreich-shirt!

Fleshgod Apocalypse (Legac of Blood Tour. @ Tivoli de Helling, Utrecht(NL)) - A mindblowing show! I've only known these guys for well over a month now, but I've got to say: this band is about the best brutal/tech death metal bands I've discovered in a long time.. These very friendly fellows from Italy gave the crowd really what they paid for, a brutal show! Great songs like "Embodied Deception" thundered through the small venue, toppling the other bands of that evening.. A gig to remember! (Also bought a shirt of this one!)

Some other gigs that were worth mentioning were those of Arkona(Paganfest) and Suffocation(Legacy of Blood)

    On to the albums!

    Album listens:

To be honest, I haven't listened to a lot of 2010-releases yet, but two of the small amount that I did listen to really stand out!

    Burzum - Belus
What a great album! I've listened to a lot of Burzum albums, and I really like his style.. but this new epos is really a step forward. Sort of like a mature, grown version of Filosofem(which is still a magnificent classic within the BM scene), with new implemented aspects, like different vocals for instance. I especially liked the songs "Sverddans" and "Kaimadalthas' Nedstigning", for they really expressed a lot of emotions Varg must have put in this great album.

Les Discrets - Septembre et ses dernières Pensées
Even though it has not been released yet, it leaked not too long ago. And yes, I downloaded it. But, after hearing it, I am sure of buying it as soon as it will be released, or pre-order it. What an astounding 10-track featuring album.. I'm not easily attracted by "Post-Rock"-aesthetics and sounds.. But I really begin to like these french bands.. It grows on you.. The by now established post-rock(hate the term)/shoegaze amalgam, perfected by french bands like Alcest(and in this case, Les Discrets) has a certain touch that I highly appreciate. It just does'nt sound fucking cheap and "just-in-it-for-the-money"-like. And certainly not with this release... Tracks like "L'echappee" and "Une Matinée D'Hiver" really reached me from deep down, which is not an easy task. I am pretty sure that I'll still listen to this for a very, very long time. Can't wait for the official release!!!

That wraps it up for now. Might update it soon.
