Well, the year is coming to a close and it's time for everyone's definitive best of 2008 lists. I've seen last.fm's already, and didn't quite agree with it, so I'm looking to you all.

For me, this was a backcatalogue year. 2007 was such an amazing year for music that it was difficult for 2008 to compete with it, but there were still some great albums released. Instead of simplifying things, the interface looks really ugly, takes away the convenience of some features, and makes the shoutbox feature really stupid (it belongs as a sidebar, the new design overemphasizes its importance).

Can't I just use the old design for myself? :(

2007 has been a remarkable, if not amazing, year for music. I don't think there has been such a great year for music in a decade (when 1997 amazed with a ton of just outstanding music). Although I'm totally into black metal, the truth is my charts really don't reflect the vast volume of stuff that other people tend to be listening to. I am leaning to think there are two types of rock listeners in the world: REM fans and U2 fans.

Of many people I've talked to, I can't find someone who liked both. I can find people who hate both, and I can find people who respect but don't care for either, but I don't know if there is an intersecting audience.

Now, there are some U2 songs I can listen to, but I generally hate the band. REM I have found nothing but respect for, though sometimes they can send me to sleep.

I've recently gotten very deeply into Lutomysl, going as far as tracking down and purchasing all his available CDs. I think he, by far, has picked up the raw, melancholic black metal banner held by venerable bands such as Darkthrone and Burzum (not that either band is lesser now, but Darkthrone is mostly doing punk rock now and Burzum is… in jail, duh).
