Thank you for the good wishes! We came through the hurricane okay...but sadly many in our area got completely flooded out. It will take a while for things to get to back to normal. We evacuated to Dallas though, and I got to see some lovely concerts while there. Thanks for thinking of me!!

Heb de Strijkkwartetten van Marttinen besteld bij 't Maris Kwartet zelf, want niet te vinden hier in 't Leuvense. Benieuwd!

I really have to start exploring the string quartets of Tauno Marttinen, as I'm also a member of Classical Finland now ;-))

I just noticed that we are about the only people on last.fm listening to Philippus de Monte ;-)

The stuff I've listened to on my computer is some ballet music he has done... which is good, but does not come close to the Maeterlinck Lieder, which I've listened to on my regular cd player. Your arms would not be able to stretch as far as necessary to form an adequate gesture for beauty. So, [ ] beauty remains in the impossibillities of the body.

I expect you know this, but I'd recommend an Ocora disc: it's Greece: Great Octotonal Chant to the Virgin, and though the cover is rather coy about it, the composer is Petros Bereketis. If you don't know it, I think you'll find that it rocks your boat...

Oh, and Tormis: Yes, he's Estonian. I bought it a while ago, when I worked at the company that imports ECM in Denmark (they also have some fantastic Silvestrov recordings), but I haven't really listened to it before. It's very beautiful, minimalstic and folkloristic. I'm a big fan of vocal music, as you can probably tell.

If you're looking for a recording, try Thomas Hampson's. He has recorded the original Lieder in piano versions (played on Mahler's own piano) and he has made some great recordings of his early Lieder, that also include some Wunderhorn texts. I have a great recording of the original Lieder conducted by Herreweghe that I can recommend.

It's Ivan Bilibin's depiction of a Firebird. I've been listening to a lot of Russian music lately, and a quick study of Russian folklore led me to Bilibin. He reminds me a bit of Gallen-Kallela, who painted the last image I had. I like your picture as well - being a spectacled fellow myself.

You are one of my top neighbours, so I've just sent you a friend request, hoping to discover more music. Nice to see at least two Danish composers on your list. Do you know Ukranian composer Valentin Silvestrov? You might enjoy his Stille Lieder, but he has also written more contemporary orchestral works.
