  • My Top 10 Artists

    28 Jul 2010, 9:55

    Taken from Anna-wa

    1. Lady Gaga
First song I heard: Just Dance (feat. Colby O'Donis)
    Favourite song: Paparazzi
    Favourite album: The Fame
Accuracy: I'm kind of ashamed that I first heard of Gaga on Perez Hilton's web page, but sadly he and I seem to have pretty similar tastes in music. I was immediately smitten with her music. It's exactly the kind of dance pop that I pray for.. amazingly catchy but not veering into trashy Europop territory. I miss her style from when she first came out, but I still absolutely love her above everyone else, with Madonna being the only exception. I think we'll be seeing amazing things from Miss Gaga.

    2. Alice in Videoland
    First song I heard: She's a Machine
Favourite song: I can't even decide.. they're all amazing
    Favourite album: Can't decide
Accuracy: They were the first artist I really ended up loving that I discovered on At first I found the vocals grating but before long I was absolutely obsessed with listening to them.. All I wanted was to acquire as much of their music as I could to surround myself with it. As a result, they were the first artist in my library to reach 1,000 plays, though my love for GaGa would soon dwarf this as she has almost 4 times as many plays. Still, AIV always has a special place in my heart for being my first love, and I can't wait for their fourth album which will hopefully come out this October ♥

    3. Britney Spears
First song I heard: ...Baby One More Time
    Favourite song: Impossible to choose
    Favourite album: Blackout
Accuracy: How can anyone born in my generation not love Britney? She was one of the defining elements of my childhood, along with the Spice Girls and the Backstreet Boys. My love for her waned as I grew into my teen years and thought that only metal was worth listening to. Thankfully I ended up returning to my first love, pop, and also Britney. Strangely I didn't start REALLY loving her until she divorced that loser Kevin Federline and shaved her head. A true badass. And my respect for her grew even further as she managed to pick herself up and come out with another truly great album, Circus.

    4. Little Boots
    First song I heard: Meddle
    Favourite song: New in Town
    Favourite album: Hands
Accuracy: I honestly didn't even like Little Boots that much when I discovered her. She only really had Meddle and Stuck on Repeat out, and I find both of these tracks rather underwhelming, especially in comparison to the music she puts out nowadays. New In Town has the honour of being maybe my favourite electronic song, and Catch 22 cannot go without mentioning. Like AIV, Little Boots was also discovered early on using and now holds ranking as my fourth.

    5. Annie
First song I heard: I Know Ur Girlfriend Hates Me
Favourite song: I Know Ur Girlfriend Hates Me
    Favourite album: Don't Stop
Accuracy: Considering I didn't like Annie at ALL when I first listened to her it's pretty amazing to me that she's won the fifth spot. Like Gaga, Perez was the one who first turned my attention to her. What probably turned me off so much about Annie is how effing high her voice is, which used to annoy the heck out of me. However the incredibly addictive sound of her music, and the degree to which I can relate to my favourite song soon turned my annoyance into absolute love. Also she's a severely underrated musician so hopefully some people will see her in my charts and try listening (:

    6. Madonna
First song I heard: eitherRay of Light or Beautiful Stranger
    Favourite song: Express Yourself
    Favourite album: Erotica
Accuracy: So I used to not like Madonna at all either. I didn't understand the big deal about her, but eventually came to the conclusion that this was because I was really only aware of the music she made from the late '90s onward. So I took a night aside to listen to all eleven of her studio albums to try and understand her appeal better. What happened was that I fell in love <3 I'm only bitter that I had to be born in 1991, and miss being alive for all the music she had come out with before, and seeing the effects she had on society. What I most love about her is the way she works through her music to give sex a more positive open look, and to represent women and gay men as the powerful human beings they are, and as ones that deserve people's respect. The effect she's had can never be duplicated. I appreciate Express Yourself for its woman positive thinking, and Erotica for its brazen sexuality. Madonna has well-earned her title as Queen of Pop. Living legend <3

    7. Lily Allen
    First song I heard: Smile
    Favourite song: Hm.. can't say
    Favourite album: Alright, Still
Accuracy: Oh godd is she still here? I'm sorry but I'm still bitter about the whole quitting-music thing. This girl is talented and so gorgeous, but such a drama queen. I first found out about her among the pages of the now defunct CosmoGIRL magazine and immediately set upon listening to some of her songs. I was horrified by the awfulness of Smile, but it quickly grew on me. Lily's first album proved she was unique in the land of pop, but I was a bit disappointed by her sophomore album, even though I still really liked it a lot. It just sounded a lot more like the sameness of electronic pop that is everywhere, and despite the British accent, Lily was getting lost among them. I'd love to see a third album to get a better idea of what can do.

    8. Dragonette
First song I heard: Jesus Doesn't Love Me
    Favourite song: I Get Around
    Favourite album: Dragonette EP
Accuracy: As much as I like them (and points for the Canadian lead singer) they kind of snuck into my top 10. I only ever like a few songs off each album, and find a lot of the other material annoying and even mediocre. But when Dragonette is on they are really on <3 I Get Around is probably my favourite for its slutty lyrics. Those are often my favourite kinds of songs, just because they make funny what so many people take seriously (as if what a girl does with her own body is any indication of her morality, or anyone's business for that matter). Again, Perez Hilton is to thank for this band's presence in my life. I can't wait till Mixin to Thrill comes out.

    9. Kelly Clarkson
First song I heard: A Moment Like This
    Favourite song: Not really sure
    Favourite album: Breakaway
Accuracy: When Kelly first came out, she was definitely of the more vanilla pop variety. Although I do like some songs off of Thankful (Anytime being a particularly moving and emotional song) it wasn't until Breakaway that I started listening to Kelly. Even then, she stayed under the radar until All I Ever Wanted came out and I realized what a positive influence her music was on my life. That being said, All I Ever Wanted doesn't come anywhere near the amazingness of Breakaway, and the appeal of Kelly soon faded, once again flying under my radar. Frankly I'm surprised she's still up this high.

    10. La Roux
    First song I heard: Bulletproof
    Favourite song: Bulletproof
    Favourite album: La Roux
Accuracy: The most recent indoctrination into my top ten, La Roux first got my attention on the car ride from my hometown to my university when I was half-asleep and this idiot Shauna was telling everyone as we listened to Bulletproof that La Roux was French. I decided to check it out again and immediately fell in love with its perfection in every facet as an electronic song; it may even topple my affection for Little Boots' New In Town. I'm not even quite sure what I like so much about it: the lyrics are clever, but don't appeal to me on any deeper level than that. It's like God meant for me to hear this song in my life. Initially I was skeptical of La Roux's other songs. My problem is the same as with Annie; Elly Jackson's voice is annoyingly high. However, the quality of the music is good enough that I eventually succumbed to the infectious beats to get to the number ten spot in my charts. I hope for them to eventually make it into my top 8.
