Vostok - Lo spazio dell'assenza

Auch wenn es musikalisch nicht immer meiner Kragenweite enspricht, und die Instrumentierung gewöhnungsbedürftig ist, will ich heute einen Ausflug in den chanson, smooth jazz, folk, Akustik Bereich machen. Allein wegen der umwerfenden Stimme der Sängerin Mina Carlucci muß ich eine Kritik verfassen. Das vorliegende Debut Album wurde auf ihrem eigenen Label letzten Monat als CD veröffentlicht, und zugleich auf Bandcamp zum Anhören und Download online gestellt. Es ist ein wahrlich schwereloses Werk. Vielleicht wurde deshalb der Bandname „Vostok“, gewählt. Die erste Rakete mit der Juri Gagarin seinerzeit ins All aufgebrochen ist, stand hier Namenspate und inspirierte die Albumgrafiken.
Vostok ist das Bandprojekt von Mina Carlucci (Gesang) und Giuseppe Argentiero (Akust./Klassische Gitarre) aus Italien (Apulien). Sehr gefühlvolle Lieder wie „Le néant scintillant“ (Das funkelnde Nichts) oder „Lacryma“ werden abwechselnd in italienischer und französischer Sprache vorgetragen. Die besten Stücke sind „Come marea“ und „Bonjour tristesse“, in denen das Saxophon nicht vorkommt, bzw. im Hintergrund bleibt, sowie das Rock Schlagzeug fehlt. Man sollte sich eventuell andere Instrumente bzw. Gastmusiker dazuholen. Anstatt des Rock-Schlagzeugs: Percussions und einen zweiten Gitarristen mit einer Rhythmusgitarre einsetzen. Das Saxophon und die Simme der Sängerin interpretieren die Melodie gleichzeitig, das Instrument erdrückt Mina C. förmlich. Das hat das überwältigende, zarte und zugleich kraftvolle Organ von ihr nicht nötig. Gegen Violinen und Klavier ist hingegen nichts einzuwenden.
Die Stilbeschreibungen die die Band selbst angibt, laufen größtenteils ins Leere: acoustic darkwave ethereal jazz neoclassical neofolk. Hiervon würde ich darkwave, ethereal, neoclassical und neofolk sofort kassieren wollen. Dafür die oben erwähnten anbringen. Folk, Smooth Jazz, Akustik und Chanson triffts schon eher. Wenn sie das Saxophon weglassen wirds folkiger, was einen alternativen Weg für sie darstellen würde.
Trotz der angeführten Einschränkungen sollte man ihr Debut Album „Lo spazio dell'assenza“ nicht verpassen.

Even if it is not always according to my taste, and the selected instruments take getting used to, I will dive today in the Chanson, Smooth Jazz, Folk and Acoustic genre. My decision to write this review is solely based on the dazzling voice by the singer Mina Carlucci. The featured debut album, which has been released on their own label last month, was uploaded on Bandcamp as well by the artists, to listen and download. A indeed light and atmospheric album. Perhaps that's why the band name "Vostok" was chosen. The first rocket that ventured into space and took Juri Gagarin with it bears that name, and was inspiration for the artwork as well.
"Vostok" is the project by Mina Carlucci (vocals) and Giuseppe Argentiero (Acoustic/Classical Guitar). They hail from Italy (Apulia). Very subtle songs like "Le néant scintillant" (The sparkling void) or "Lacryma" are sung either in Italian or French. The best pieces are "Come marea" and "Bonjour tristesse", where the Sax is not present, or is just in the background, plus the drum kit is not in use. Maybe one should rely on different instruments, I mean guest musicians. Instead of using a standard rock drum set: percussions and a second guitar player for rhythm guitar. The sax and the vocals interpret the melody at the same time, which smothers her voice literally. Her stunning gentle vocal timbre and at the same time powerful organ deserves better. There is nothing to say against violins and piano though.
The tags used by the artist themselves prove futile: acoustic darkwave ethereal jazz neoclassical neofolk. I would subtract darkwave, ethereal, neoclassical and neofolk immediately, and would rather suggest the ones mentioned above. folk, smooth jazz, acoustic and chanson would fit better. If they get rid of the saxophone it would be more folky, what would pave an alternative way for them.
In spite of the expressed limitations in their debut, "Lo spazio dell'assenza" should not be missed.
