Yes, that just HAS to be the most interesting field and the professors here are liberal enough to let you broaden your horizons, but...I think that I'd like to do something that has to do with "Science VS Christianity" or get involved with the division of the Churches, since these are the modern problems the Church is facing, this is where it needs help.

  • the_gray_fox

Of course, I've heard about masters in the psychology of religion, hermeneutics (interpreting), history of the Church, archeology-related studies and so on...the usual.

Oh, and, about the Schism...the Papacy is much more "open-minded" (read: ecumenistic). They approve most of the Eastern mysteries as legit and see the situation as if there is actual theological problem between the two Churches. The Eastern Church stays firm to her beliefs, considers the Papacy a heresy (we refer to such them as a "denomination" or "heterodox", because they're many) and believes that they are the ones who should make steps back. Go figure, sounds like another holy war to you maybe, lol.

Oh, it's awesome. It's an underrated school (mainly because you only need a ~12/20 grade to get in), so we get many careless students, but many end up loving it in the end. Most think it's full of ultra-conservative priests teaching, but it's nothing like it; the professors are quite liberal (and very faithful) and we only have one priest teaching and he's teaching Psychology, hah... Any Christian could attend the first semesters without disagreeing or anything, the stuff we do are very general: when were the books written and by whom, the Church's history and some Ancient Hebrew. Still, you can see the Orthodox faith in the professors' words, since they're always read for "unofficial" discussion and are quite close to the students. The rest semesters get deeper, they teach Dogmatics and what makes the Church different from heresies and so on. The school has all sorts of people, also some foreigners and a few priests studying.

I'd recommend reading the Catholic Encyclopedia's article on the Eastern Schism: http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/13535a.htm

Ha! According to my scouts/spies (lolgoogle), it's one of the following: Weit, Wolter, Wout, Wouter. All sound a bit like German (don't be offended). Also, I noticed you're seeing Gojira next month, good, they've a very powerful band on stage.

I think I know your real name and it's not Rumpelstiltskin. If your name is supposed to be anyhow related to Wealdhere, then your name is Walter! Now, give me back my child, I'm off to marry my prince.

The Law, pre-med students and other Ivy league grads that I asked didn't seem to have a big problem with the idea. You noted ethical grounds, does that mean they objected to it for other reasons? It was curious wording I didn't know if you purposefully worded it that way because there was a caveat. Some premonition of doom mayhaps.

Have you read anything by Freeman Dyson? Or read/heard any of the interviews of Steven Payne or Reshma Shett? You used similar terminology in describing organisms as hardware and DNA as the software. I've only heard Steven Payne and Reshma Shett in interviews, I'm not aware of any of their writings. I'm familiar with a few of Freeman Dyson's works and he describes the idea verbatim. Either that or you know a molecular biologist because that same word string pops up with them. Long shout longer, was that an original idea or who did you hear it from first?

It's odd the disconnect that occurs with people though, when they're ignorant to it they're repulsed by it. When they know about it already, they seem fully excited by the possibilities that this discovery can lead to. In a generation or two, when the benefits permeate society unwittingly I don't think there will be any anger over the advances. Kind of like all the anti-abortion people who don't realize they've been given inoculations and vaccines that originated from a single aborted cell. What do you find with your IRL friends you talk to about this? I figure since you're taking a scientific major most people around you will be as obsessed or more obsessed with science news and discoveries than you. A glorious part of being in academia, what have been their reaction to the news? Any dissenters that were knowledgeable about the news?

I had asked a lot of people over the weekend what they thought about the creation of synthetic cells or about an organism that had its own website. Most, seemed to be shocked, outraged and seemed to in-eloquently grasp at the ideas of the hubris of man or Greek tragedies like Icarus. Do you have any thoughts on the moral implications of Mr. Venter's work?
