This time we got up at 4 AM in the morning and drove a hour later as usual at around 5 AM. We live in Bavaria near Nuremberg so we had a long drive for us... just a bit over 650 km to travel. We had no problems with the traffic until were about 20 km south of Hamburg but it didn't slow us down much... we still arrived in Itzehoe by 1 PM. Once we got to Itzehoe we went shopping for food, beverages and other things that would be needed in the week to come... when we were done it was time for munching out at "Burger King" across the parking lot. Shortly afterwards I called someone from our group to get the latest news and that's when shit hit the fan, the alarm bells were ringing in my head. Normally they aren't suppose to let anybody on the camping grounds before 3 PM but the news that I got was that they had start letting people in at 6 AM or so... F U C K I N ' A A ! ! ! So we all jumped in the car and drove to meet the rest of our group as early as possible... of course that meant we were eating our hamburgers and drinking our colas on the way but we got there by 2:15 PM so they didn't have to wait too long for us. As always it was pretty damm cool to see the entire crew again but we had to move and move fast.

We arrived at the camping grounds at exactly 3 PM and then they wanted to send our entire crew to "Area I"... BULL FUCKING SHIT! It took about 10 minutes before we finally convinced them that we deserved better... our goup had over 30 members and there are people in our group that have been going to W:O:A since the first one in 1990. Anyway to make a long story short we landed in "Area D" approx. 100 meters behind "Area C" so that was okay except for the fact that we had to pay a extra €30 per person for coming on Monday... I'd say that's being pretty unfriendly to the customers... meaning us of course. This time around it took us until 6:30 PM before everything was up and running... refrigerators, our complete PC system with amps for music, karaoke and films. Of course beer on draught is a must and the lighting system for the night too. Around midnight we always have karoke by us in our huge party tent with lots of guests from all over the camping ground... partying until at least the sun shows up on the next day... now that's what I call Wacken.

Tuesday was our lazy day as always... most were people just chillin' out... and me? I went with a couple of people to check out what was going on downtown in the village and later when we got back to our camp in the afternoon we went with the majority of our group to the swimming pool... time to do some hiking once again. The weather was pretty awesome meaning that it was very hot and that of course means that there were a whole lot of people at the swimming pool. So most of us just chilled-out in the shade while others played some soccer or perhaps vollyball. Of course we used the 3 meter board to do pretty stupid things at times... other people did much crazier shit as us and we all really enjoyed that cold water... very, very refreshing. Figured out that by the time I got back to our camp I had walked at least 16 km or so but that no problem... that's very good for my lower back... have had a few problems with my back in the past. Of course we BBQ-ed everyday and drank beer, mead and other things that make you grin a lot and do very stupid things at times... we were all just simply enjoying our time-out from the normal walk of life... that's Wacken.

At 9 AM on Wednesday it was time to go to the village for breakfast... scrambled eggs with ham, a biscuit and a coffee for €4... can't beat that. We always do that from Wednesday til Saturday... best way to get to know the the home town folks plus the food tastes better and much cheaper in the village. We went swimming again in the afternoon but this time around the weather wasn't all that hot plus ther were a few clouds in the sky. That was perfect for me because I needed a more or empty pool to do some serious training... I went ahead and swam 1000 meters... took me approx, 20 mins to complete but actually it was just for fun anyway... so no big deal. I felt really good afterwards although a few people thought I was some kinda of a wacko with my swimming cap and googles on... hey people... wake-up... we are in Wacken... do as you please... live and let live. Probably walked another 16 km on Wednesday but that's okay... I had plenty of time on my hand... I never take the bus unless we are too late going to the swimming pool in the afternoon. Of course when we got back it was time to party again... but what I enjoy most about Wacken is not the partying... what I enjoy most is the deep discussions one can have with many different types of people from various backgrounds... people come here from all over the world... simply fantastic! I decided to go to bed a little earlier as usual... namely shortly after midnight because I wanted to be top fit for the concerts starting Thursday.

We listen to lots of different types of bands in our Metal-Disco, here's a small extract:
Johnny Cash... The Doors... Jimi Hendrix... Deep Purple... Black Sabbath... Creedence Clearwater Revival... Led Zeppelin... Pink Floyd... Alice Cooper... Queen... Aerosmith... Nazareth... AC/DC... Kiss... Thin Lizzy... Judas Priest... Scorpions... Motörhead... Journey... Van Halen... Accept... Saxon... Iron Maiden... Ozzy Osbourne... Dio... Foreigner... Manowar... Def Leppard... Die Toten Hosen... Metallica... Slayer... Mötley Crüe... Megadeth... Böhse Onkelz... Anthrax... Twisted Sister... Bathory... Kreator... Queensrÿche... Pantera... Death... Guns N' Roses... and yes... that is really only a small percentage... maybe 10-15% at most.

    EPILOG

When it was all over this year we drove back south to Bavaria (eigentlich Franken)... we left just after midnight on Saturday evening... we were home by 11:30 AM on Sunday. We made a few pit-stops along the way... sleeping 3 hours in the car at one point and of course we ate breakfast too. The majority of our group drives home on Sunday morning at 8 AM but we leave earlier to avoid the traffic... being that we also have the longest distance to drive the others in our group had no problem with that. WACKEN 2014 - This time around it was very hot and dry... there was no mud to be seen but lots and lots of dust. "Desert Storm 2014 in Wacken"... man I'm sure glad that I bought that very large desert scarf... it was very practical under those conditions. When I got home on Sunday I looked in the mirror and noticed that I had gotten a very dark suntan, my light brown hair was blonder as normal and because I hadn't shaved in a week I saw gray hair on my chin... holy shit! I guess that means I'm getting old... na ja that's life.

    + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + +

    LOW POINT

A fuckin' dumshit stole our laptop early on Friday morning probably between 4 and 6 AM in the morning but we had one in reserve so the party continued. Things like that aren't suppose happen under metalheadz... but the damm s.o.b. probably wasn't a metalhead anyway... fucking bastard!!!

    HIGH POINT

BLACK STAR RIDERS live on the W.E.T. STAGE... simply awesome... you had the feeling you were back in the 70's again. At least 1/3 of their songs were from THIN LIZZY... I believe I was in a trance or some what of a daze... there was such a magical atmosphere in the air... you could feel it.

IF YOUR TOO LAZY TO WALK IN WACKEN THEN THAT'S OKAY...

SOMETHING EXTRA OVER WACKEN - PART 1

They could make a few changes in Wacken for their true fans... namely those who come on Monday or Tuesday... for example...

1- Open the camping grounds free of charge from Monday morning at 6 AM until Sunday evening at 6 PM... less traffic jams.

2- Let the home town folks in the village start selling not on Wednesday but starting on Monday at 8 AM and for the rest of the week including Sunday... less stress by shopping.

3- The swimming pool should be free of charge as it used to be and the pool shuttle bus could possibly be free of charge too... more people (customers) on the move in the village.

A postive effect from this would be that people that come to Wacken practically every year and spend lots and lots of money would feel that they are finally being treated fairly again... like it used to be... and not being used and abused as that is the feeling that the vast majority have had in recent years. Another positive effect is that there would certainly be a larger financial turnover because of the additional full 2 days of commerce... meaning... more revenue for the entire community of Wacken... namely the people that make this wonderful week possible for everyone... and that year after year since 1990... thanx!

SOMETHING EXTRA OVER WACKEN - PART 2

By no means was everything done negatively by the organiziers... there at least 3 things that I found very positive myself.

1- In the staging area there was a lot more room for the larger crowds we have had at Wacken in the last couple of years or so... and what's also very nice is that you can see the TRUE METAL STAGE and the BLACK STAGE from the main entrance (approx. 400 meters) without something blocking your view of the stages as in the earlier years... great job from the W:O:A crew.

2- That that with the 1 liter water pouch was an outstanding idea! I think that helped a lot of people from dehydrating and certainly saved the medics a lot of extra work that they certainly didn't need... not everyone can afford to pay €1 per 100 ml for beverages the entire day.

3- For a great choice of excellent stuff to eat is the Wackinger Village the best place to go when you don't go into the village of Wacken... it's also a great place to chill-out between concerts and in the evening they even have secured campfires... very cozy... another awesome idea from the crew at W:O:A.

    + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + +

SOMETHING EXTRA OVER WACKEN - PART 3

W:O:A 2015 was SOLD-OUT within 12 hours... now that's what I call crazy! But there is a major danger in being sold-out that quickly... as we all know Wacken is slowly but surely becoming anything but a customer friendly event. It's turning into a huge money-making machine... meaning... that they use and abuse the customers where they can.. that... my friends... is anything... but M E T A L ! Is that the future of Wacken similiar to... Mr. Samaranch and the Olympics... Mr. Ecclestone and the F1... or Mr. Blatter and the FIFA... I certainly hope not. I would like to think that the organiziers haven't forgotten their roots and that they remember it's the fans that made Wacken what it is today... not the bands... of course the bands are outstanding too but most of these bands can be seen elsewhere too... it's the fans that make Wacken unique. Without a doubt... they... the organiziers... worked their butts off to keep Wacken alive when a lot of people thought is was laying dead in the water... but they should ask themselves this one very important question... how much profit do they really need to survive? Of course they should earn good money at it but do they have the self-discipline and the conscience not to over do it... not to get carried away a bit too much... just because they can get away with it. If they do... the true spirit of Wacken will probably be brain dead by the end of this decade. Is it really worth it... to destroy something so rare and precious these days on this otherwise totally crazy planet of ours. People will always find a excuse for abusing other people but someone with a strong character won't even be tempted to thinking about doing something like that... namely taking advantage of their fellow human beings...particularly people that love Metal... exactly like they do themselves. As we all know, money can ruin even the best character(s) when the person(s) involved are simply to weak to withstand the temptation... sad but true. I hope that someone ensures that somebody from the organization committee for W:O:A gets this blog.

    SOMETHING EXTRA FROM ME

Next year I will not be going to Wacken because I will be spending my vacation with wife this time around... I told her before Wacken that next year I will take a time-out for her... a promise is a promise. We will be on the road with a motorhome for couple of weeks enjoying the landscape and the people of Scandinavia. Just my wife and me... and that means a break from the kids for a change... yahoo!! There will be no report card from me in 2015 but I'll be back reporting in 2016... head-banging and showing those horns in the fields of Wacken with thousands of other metalheadz!

EXACTLY... RAISE THOSE HORNS IN THE AIR

    + + + + + + + + M O N D A Y - T E U S D A Y - W E D N E S D A Y + + + + + + + +

We got up at 03:00 in the morning and were on the road by 04:00. We arrivied in Itzehoe at approx. 13:00 in the afternoon. On the way we only lost some time by Göttingen because of a construction site on the autobahn but otherwise it was smooth running. First stop in Itzehoe was at the local "Burger King", we all had the munchies big-time...and no... we didn't smoke no pot. Afterwards we went shopping across the parking lot at "Famila", we needed few things like steaks for the BBQ and baby wipes for the Dixi-Klos (portable toilets) on the camping grounds. We finally met up with the rest of the crew at 14:00 in a village approx. 10 km from Wacken. The people in our group come from 6 different states in Germany plus 1 American and 1 Australian. It was great to see everyone again!

We arrivied at the camping grounds at about 14:50, by 15:30 we were putting our tents up in "Area C". By 17:00 or so we had everything up and running... refrigerators, freezer, complete PC system with amps for music and karaoke, beer on draught (lots of barrels in reserve), lighting system for the night, etc. Last year was a bitch, we had less then 1 hour of daylight to organize our camp, this year it was much better. Our Metal-Disco was up and running until about 02:00 in the morning, after that we were doing karaoke (Sing Star) until about 07:00 in the morning. Of course we had a lots of neighbours that came over and partied with us... that's Wacken.

On Tuesday we just hanged around as usual and then around 14:00 in the afternoon we decided to go swimming. The weather was fine and there were not many people at the pool. We found a place to chill-out under the shade of the trees, the one or the other slept a hour or two. Some of us got a little crazy jumping from the 3 meter board and doing stupid shit if you know what I mean. Later, just for fun, I went ahead and swim 1 km, that was possible because the water wasn't as ice cold as in the years before. It was the first time that I ever did a little bit of training in Wacken... plus we walked the 6km to and from the swimming pool. No problem whatsoever, good to go. We got back just after 18:30 or so and then of course it was BBQ-time again. Later we visited our neighbors in the surrounding area and when we showed back up just after dark we listened to lots of music. As always everything from the 1960's to the year 2013... mostly Rock & Metal but also stuff like Johnny Cash or military marching music. At 24:00 it was time for karaoke again, this time around it lasted only until 06:00 in the morning... lazy people :-)

On Wednesday at approx. 09:00 we went into the village for breakfast as we always do... from Wednesday until Saturday visiting the town folks and getting something good to eat. The food is cheaper and mostly better as what you get on the camping grounds. Otherwise the place to eat on the camping grounds is in the Wackinger Village, it's sort like a middle age market... lots of very good food to choose from. Any way after breakfast I went to the W:O:A Info Office and bought my W:O:A 2013 t-shirt. It only took about approx. 35 minutes, so that was okay. In the evening it was time for BBQ-ing, drinking beer and head-banging to music as always. We started a bit late with karaoke around 00:30... but it was a long night. The last person to stop singing went to bed at 08:30 in the morning?! Well he certainly wasn't lazy, was he... a real party animal! On Thursday morning we went into the village to the gas station and my oldest son & me brought back 10 liters of gas each in our backpacks for the generator at our camping area. The generator must be up and running practically all the time, otherwise we don't have any electricity. So now it was finally Thursday, time for some serious head-banging... let the festival begin!

This time around I have decided to put videos of all the bands that I saw or bands that I wanted to see but missed. Sometimes it doesn't work out... bummer. I could have missed a band for many reasons, for example... 2 bands playing at the same time... lightning storm, don't want to die just yet... simply too burnt-out and needed a break... etc. I also won't be giving grades for the bands either, everybody should decide for themselves if the performance was totally awesome or pretty damm awful. I did my best to put live videos in there, when possible from Wacken 2013 but that doesn't always work. If I didn't find a good live video then I put something else in there. By some videos is the synchronization not what it should be... sorry... shit happens... not my fault :-( By October or so I will probably be able to put some other videos in there for some of the these bands. So all in all I counted 48 videos, should be something in there for just about everyone... have fun & hope you enjoy it!

Well Lemmy from MOTÖRHEAD had to break up his concert after approx. 30 minutes or so... big-time bummer. But from what I understand he's doing okay now, that's nice to hear. You have to listen to what your body says otherwise you are going to have some serious problems even if your name is Lemmy. Good health is very important, so watch out for yourselves: http://www.metalinsider.net/updates/lemmy-recuperating-following-shortened-wacken-set

So this year was a hell of lot better then last year... had no problems with my back or with my right leg. Nice to camp and party without using pain-killers... haha!!

We (3 people from "The Land of the Franken") drove off in the middle of the night at approx. 03:00 early Sunday morning. Last year we needed more then 11 hours to get back to the region where we all come from in Franconia (Northern Bavaria). This time around we took more breaks and we even slept over a hour by Hannover and yet it took less then 10 hours this time. No stress -> "just rol-lin'... down the high-way... liste-ning... to our tunes!" Of course we said good-bye to everyone on Saturday evening, most of our group leaves the camping grounds about 09:00 in the morning on Sunday.

In the beginning... many, many years ago our group had only 13 members. Some of the original members don't go to Wacken anymore for several reasons. But in the meantime we have approx. 35 people in our group. All different types of people from all different walks of life... old & young... rich & poor... no problem whatsoever. In Wacken we all respect one another as equals and that means we get along just fine... everybody shares and helps out where they can. The same usually goes for our neighbours too. Question... why doesn't that work in the so-called real world?

Of course we bought our tickets on the Monday 2 days after Wacken was over. W:O:A 2014 was SOLD-OUT on Tuesday... unbelievable! Looking forward to next year when it's time for the "Metal Family" to meet again. Certainly the best week of the year for me. I'm not 17 anymore but when I am in Wacken I almost feel like I am 17 again... I guess that's the best way to explain why I go (almost) every year.

    SOMETHING EXTRA

In the last couple of years it seems there are more and more idiots that come to Wacken just to destroy there camping equipment before they leave, usually on Saturday. If you don't need your camping equipment then that's just fine. Just leave it as it is, I'm sure that somebody could use it but to destroy just for fun is just plain stupid. Perhaps some fellow Metalheadz can use it or perhaps the village of Wacken can donate it to some who could use it. But it could be worse... a hell of lot worse. There are some big-time dumshits that like to keep the local fire department busy and they do that by torching their camping equipment. Exactly what no one needs on camping grounds with 60 000 to 70 000 campers. That's the best way to get somebody killed, I mean anyone with half a brain knows that. We had a incident about 100 meters from us but we got lucky that the fire department put the fire out so quickly. If you catch some bastards doing that kind of shit by you, then make sure that you and your neighbors turn them over to the police... S.O.B.'s If they resist then make sure that they land in the emergency room where they belong, the bastards are putting you and other people's lives at risk.

Anybody who knows me, knows that I am a very tolerant person... my credo is... live and let live... but people who are intolerant... deserve no tolerance... none whatsoever.

Do., 2. Aug. – Wacken Open Air 2012

    MONDAY - TEUSDAY - WEDNESDAY

We drove up north on Monday morning to couple of good friends on the Baltic Sea about a 1 hour drive north of Wacken ...usually takes 7 hours until Wacken ...well on Monday we drove a total of 10 hours because we almost drove to the border of Denmark ...a very, very long day.

On Monday they weren't letting anyone in on the camping grounds but we had some connections to people who work there ...then came the telephone call that they were allowing people on to the camping grounds. So we made a couple of phone calls and started moving down south ...others joining us on the way ...by the time we drove into Wacken we had 13 cars in our convoy. We arrivied at "Area C" at about 08:45 PM ...we only had a approx. 1 hour of sunshine before it got dark ...most of us were pretty burnt-out and were sleeping by 2 in the morning.

On Tuesday we didn't do much except hang around in the camping area ...of course we visited our neighbors and listened to a lot of music ...from Classic Rock to Death & Black Metal ...and just about everything in between. We enjoyed using our BBQ(s) ...yummy, yummy ...and in the evening we had our Metal-Disco up and running as always ...later we were doing Karaoke (Sing Star) from 2 AM on ...actually until long after the sun had shown up and it was time for breakfast ...we didn't have as many vistors as last year because we weren't next to one of the main roads ...still we had lots of fun.

Finally on Wednesday we made it to the swimming pool ...a few of us played beach vollyball but most of us just chilled-out a bit. The water was ice-cold as always but for me it felt a bit warmer as usual ...I stayed in the water for a good 20 minutes or so without freezing my butt off ...in the past it was maybe 5 minutes. In the evening we did the same as Tuesday ...just taking it easy and looking forward to some serious head-banging starting on Thursday.

These time around I won't be giving grades to the bands because I was not up to it ...I damaged my right hamstring (thigh muscle) approx. a month before Wacken.
This happened by Ju-Jutsu training (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/German_Ju-Jutsu) ...we warm-up using our version of indoor rugby using a basketball ...that means no dribbling but tackling on the mats ...but we still shot baskets for points ...yes I know were a bit crazy ...shit happens ...no risk, no fun!

Anyway I couldn't see all the bands that I wanted ...usually I can watch 8 bands in a row but that wasn't possible because of the pain in my leg and my butt too for that matter ...had to take a break more often. So what I'm going to do is put some videos in there of the bands that I saw ...plus those I missed because of my buttache ...haha!! Of course there will some pics too ...it's not the same as the years before but it's the best I can do under the circumstances.

    MONDAY - TEUSDAY - WEDNESDAY
Well we arrived on Monday with 390 liters of beer in kegs plus a lot of beer in cans(approx. another 240 liters)...of course we had met, schnapps and whiskey too.

By Monday evening we had both fridges full plus the freezer running in our rectangle-shaped pavilion tent...was open on the eastside...made it easier for us when we wanted to bbq...our very large party-tent on the northside was turned into a metal disco with two 1000 watt speakers and over 30 000 songs to choose from...on the southside we had a round-shaped pavilion tent for our dispensing equipment ...nothing like beer from tap.

We were only 1 minute from the main gate in "Area P" and we entertained most of our neighbors...why?...from 2 AM in the morning until 8 to 9 AM we had Karaoke in our metal disco...everyone and anyone was invited...after-hours party...Oooh...I forgot to mention that we were a group from approx. 30 people from all over Germany...our next-door neighbors were from Switzerland...their first time at Wacken (Swiss drove 14hrs).

We went to the swimming pool on Teusday and Wednesday...on Wednesday in the swimming pool we saw Blaas of Glory...they got everyone up and singing...Ooops...almost forgot to mention that on Teusday there was a "Circle Pit" by the water fountian followed by a "Wall Of Death" in the shallow pool...and of course all the time you could enjoy watching all the crazy and sometimes naked people jumping from the 3-meter platform...water was ice-cold as usual...that's Wacken!!!

Just for fun we made a "Slow-Motion Zone" on the path next to out party-tent...most people put on a damm good show...enjoyed watching them from our camping chairs...the best ones got a free beer from us...we usually just chill-out until Thursday before the bands start playing in the afternoon.

2- Kvelertak front man Erlend was crowd-surfing and singing at the same time...with a microphone with a very, very long cable...simply crazy!!!

    FRIDAY>>> Primal Fear-2 / Suicidal Tendencies-2 / Morbid Angel-2 / Sodom-3 / Reliquiae-2 / Khold-3 / Judas Priest-1 / Triptykon-1 / Airbourne-1

Best Band Friday> I love Triptykon but the best of the day and probably the best show of all at Wacken 2011 was Judas Priest...no one sings like Halford...sad that they are on their farewell tour.

    JUDAS PRIEST

    TRIPTYKON

    AIRBOURNE

    Extra notes for Friday:
3- Primal Fear > they put on a awesome show and almost got the best note...Ralf's singing is 98% Halford...outstanding job!

4- Suicidal Tendencies > reminded me of Rage Against The Machine...very solid performance.

5- Morbid Angel > the show was great but the new album is better...no harm meant...David did a good job as front man.

6- Airbourne > although it was dark this time around...Joel climbed upstairs anyway.

7- Triptykon > probably the only time in my life that a band put me into a trance...strange...very strange.

    SATURDAY>>> Moonsorrow-3 / Triosphere-2 / The Haunted-1 / Torture Squad-2 / Stormzone-2 / Mayhem-2 / Iced Earth-1 / Sepultura-1 / Avantasia-2 / Kreator-1 / Tokyo Blade-3 / Venomin James-3 / Ghost-1

Best Band Saturday> Iced Earth was great...Sepultura was a bit better...but the victory goes to Kreator...but still I must say that the other two bands... or for that matter The Haunted and Ghost too were all excellent...Saturday was certainly a kick in the face...terrific!

    THE HAUNTED

    ICED EARTH

    SEPULTURA

    KREATOR

    GHOST

    Extra notes for Saturday:
8- Triosphere > really enjoyed seeing this band live...Ida has absolutely outstanding voice.

9- The Haunted > as live band totally awesome!!!

10- Torture Squad > there were a whole lot of fans from Brazil in that tent...atmosphere was perfect for some serious head-banging.

11- Mayhem > you got this strange feeling that when the singer Attila could come down from the stage...he would probably kill something (or someone).

12- Iced Earth > was a very emotional concert for Matt Barlow...was the last time he will ever sing Metal live for his fans...wish him lots of fun and success for the future.

13- Sepultura > their first time in Wacken and what for a butt-kicking performance...Derrick not only singed but played his own drums once in awhile...Samba!...Samba!

14- Avantasia > that was their last performance...Tobias will coming out with a new Edguy album in the near future.

15- Kreator > you got the feeling that Mille & Co. wanted to burn Wacken down...a totally brutal thrash attack!!!

16- Ghost > I'm sure glad I stayed up and saw this concert...simply cool...was totally happy afterwards...couldn't stop smiling and laughing at times...cool.

17- SIMPLY AWESOME, saw 28 bands (Saturday 13 bands seen...I know I'm a bit crazy) these year and 10 of them got the best grade possible...seems that Wacken is more fun from year to year.

    Bands that I saw at Wacken 2010 with grades for their live performance, 1-Excellent / 2-Good / 3-Okay / 4-Bad

    WEDNESDAY>>> Fiddler's Green-2 / Red Hot Chilli Pipers-3

    Extra notes for Wednesday:
1- Both these bands played on the Wackinger Stage, Fiddler's Green wanted some "Crowd Surfing" and got it.
Later on the crowd did a "Circle-Pit" and "Wall of Death"...and that by Fiddler's Green...totally wacko!!!

    THURSDAY>>> Alice Cooper-1 / Mötley Crüe-2 / Iron Maiden-1

Best Band Thursday> Iron Maiden was very good but Alice Cooper was better, show totally kicked ass and I say that even though I'm a big-time Maiden fan.

    ALICE COOPER - SCHOOL'S OUT

IRON MAIDEN - 2 MINUTES TO MIDNIGHT

    Extra notes for Thursday:
2- Alice Cooper > people started "Crowd Surfing" approx. 300 meters from the stage, probably took 10 minutes before they got there...crazy!

3- Mötley Crüe > they put on a good show although I usually don't care much for poser bands, but none the less a job well done.

    FRIDAY>>> Dew-Scented-3 / Amorphis-1 / Suicidal Angels-2 / Orphaned Land-3 / Die Apokalyptischen Reiter-2 / The BossHoss-2 / Arch Enemy-1 / Grave Digger-1 / Slayer-1

Best Band Friday> Slayer was great but Arch Enemy was a bit better, there show was simply awesome!

    AMORPHIS - TOWARDS & AGAINST

    ARCH ENEMY - NEMESIS

    GRAVE DIGGER - REBELLION

SLAYER - POSTMORTEM / RAINING BLOOD

    Extra notes for Friday:
4- Amorphis was simply incredible, just about everyone was singing every song.

5- Grave Digger > they started their show with a group of bag-pipers playing "Scotland the Brave".

6- Suicidal Angels - Die Apokalyptischen Reiter - The BossHoss > they all put on a solid performance, although they all play totally different types of music...was lots of fun.

    SATURDAY>>> Caliban-3 / Kampfar-2 / Overkill-1 / W.A.S.P.-2 / Cannibal Corpse-2 / Stratovarius-2 / Edguy-1 / Candlemass-1 / Soulfly-1

Best Band Saturday> Candlemass was for me the best band not only on Saturday but for the entire week.
I love their albums but I've never seen them live before.
Now I understand why Black Sabbath was so huge back in the 70's.
Overkill was a very close second.

OVERKILL - BRING ME THE NIGHT

    EDGUY - SAVE ME

    CANDLEMASS - BLACK DWARF

    SOULFLY - ROOTS BLOODY ROOTS

    Extra notes for Saturday:
7- Edguy > Tobias got the whole crowd up and roaring like he always does...everyone was singing.

8- Soulfly > was a 1000x better as W:O:A 2006, sort like a mixture of old-school Sepultura and Cavalera Conspiracy.

9- Kampfar - W.A.S.P. - Cannibal Corpse - Stratovarius > all these bands were cool too, good entertainment for all different kinds of "Metalheadz".

10- EXCELLENT, only saw 23 bands these year but 10 of them got the best grade possible.

    Iron Maiden
    Soulfly
    Amorphis
    Edguy
    Grave Digger

Had a great time, totally crazy but peaceful as always.

Probelms: The prices on the festival grounds are very expensive and they always seem to have a problem with having enough T-shirts in the sizes S, M and L.

Hometown folks friendly and helpful as always.

    EXTRA NOTE:
A fellow Metalhead that's been to every W:O:A since 1995 couldn't make it this year.
He passed away on the 18th of July but he wanted everyone to go and have a good time just the same.
You will never be forgotten >>> R.I.P. "Metal Brother"

We will be buying our tickets for 2011 in September again, he would want us to be there to "Raise the Flag" in the "Fields of Wacken".

Do., 30. Jul. – Wacken Open Air 2009

    Bands seen at Wacken 2009 with grades for their live performance, 1-Excellent / 2-Good / 3-Okay / 4-Bad

    WEDNESDAY>>> Bon Scott-2 / Onkel Tom Angelripper-2

    Extra notes for Wednesday:
1- Both bands played in the tent (Headbangers Ballroom), Bon Scott did a great job covering AC/DC.
Onkel Tom Angelripper from Sodom got the german-speaking crowd up and roaring,
    warm-up party was pretty good.

    THURSDAY>>> Schandmaul-2 / J.B.O.-4 / Running Wild-1 / Heaven & Hell-1

HEAVEN & HELL - BIBLE BLACK

RUNNING WILD - UNDER JOLLY ROGER

Best Band Thursday> Heaven & Hell (Black Sabbath lives on, sorry Ozzy Osbourne...awesome performance from Dio & Co.).

    Extra notes for Thursday:
2- J.B.O. > they had big-time probelms with the technic on the Party Stage...too loud and then too quiet.
Never got things under control, normally a pretty good band but not today.

3- Running Wild > their last concert and what for an outstanding performance, gonna miss them.

    FRIDAY>>> Gamma Ray-2 / Tristania-3 / Nevermore-2 / Airbourne-1 (kicked-butt just like last year in Wacken) / HammerFall-2 / Bullet For My Valentine-3 / Motörhead-1 / In Flames-2 / Doro-2 / Ammon Amarth-2

    MOTÖRHEAD - KILLED BY DEATH

    AIRBOURNE - GIRLS IN BLACK

Best Band Friday> Motörhead (Best live concert I've ever seen from them...Lemmy & Co. alive and kicking).

    Extra notes for Friday:
4- Gamma Ray - Nevermore - HammerFall - In Flames - Doro - Amonn Amarth > everyone of them played real good concerts, Friday was a very good day in Wacken.

5- Bullet For My Valentine > where as Motörhead did their best, BFMV wasn't as good as the first 2 times that I saw them...it wasn't bad but it wasn't good either.
I guess everyone can have a bad (average!?) day.

    SATURDAY>>> Rage-1 / Catherdal-3 / Testament-2 / Heaven Shall Burn-3 / Axel Rudi Pell-2 / In Extremo-2 / Volbeat-1 / Enslaved-3 / Saxon-1 / Korpiklaani-2 / Subway to Sally-1

    SAXON - WHEELS OF STEEL

    VOLBEAT - SAD MAN'S TONGUE

    RAGE - CARVED IN STONE

SUBWAY TO SALLY - AUF KIEL

Best Band Saturday> Saxon (Best that I've seen from them too, just like Lemmy the night before, but Biff was a tick better...but I must admit Volbeat was a close second).

    Extra notes for Saturday:
6- Rage > what for a excellent performance, on any other day they would have been the "Best of the Day"...like those guest singers.

7- Volbeat > hard to believe but even better as in Rock-im-Park this year, have to see them indoors one day.
This band has to be seen live to appreciate what for outstanding performers they are.

8- Subway to Sally > for the german-speaking folk they could have easily been the best on Saturday, but at 2 in the morning there were only approx. 25.000-30,000 fans.
    None the less...great performance.

9- Heaven Shall Burn > didn't live up to my expectations (perhaps they were set to high?), but they certainly had the largest circle-pit of the day...with one exception: Machine Head

10- WOW!!! Saturday was even better then Friday!

Excellent live performances by Wacken 2009>
    Heaven & Hell
    Saxon

Last year Iron Maiden played in Wacken, but I must say that this was even better this time around.
My best Wacken Open Air to date, crazy & peaceful as always.
Only 2 major probelms: the ever-changing weather and the high prices!
Can't change the weather, but if you go into the village you can certianly get things cheaper.
Well in September I will be buying our tickets for 2010...Rain or Shine!
