Too tight to be shambling, too much fun to be The Waterboys and, somehow, not hip enough to be NME cover stars, The Woodentops are one of the most overlooked bands of the late ‘80s. Their two studio albums, Giant and Wooden Foot Cops On The Highway are well produced and full of memorable hooks. The blend of acoustic instruments and electronic effects probably did them no favours through giving music journalists no simple box to put them in but they’ve stood up to the test of time better than many other indie darlings of the day. Sadly none of their music is streamable on Lastfm but it’s easily available elsewhere and, best of all, the band are back and playing live again, still as sparky as ever.
