    wow, lila downs is a magnific singer... try jaramar and astrid hadad... los tigres del norte, they sing themes about life of emmigrants, people livin in hard situations and of course like most of mexican music: about love... (by the way el niño y la boda means something like the kid and the wedding is a very very sad story...) i also recommend you oscar chávez, and another kind of folk, gender name is música de banda, look for banda el recodo, banda machos, i'm not sure if you can find here some abouth them.

    mexican artists that whaaaat???... sorry but my english is not enough for undertanding that... anyway i can help u... but tell me, what kind of music are you lookinf for? good bands: nortec (electronic with northern mexican folk), café tacuba (they're better if you can understand the lyrics), mmh... you can try also plastilina mosh, lila downs (modern interpretation of folk mexican music), lhasa (not totally mexican), of course mm. chavela vargas (only folk) and well really folk music: los tigres del norte, josé alfredo jiménez... look also for the gender "son jarocho" also much more enjoyable if you understand the lyrics... uff.. ska? reaggea?
