  • 'New' music?

    1 Jun 2008, 13:04

I realised the other day how little 'new' music I listen to (as opposed to new albums by 'old' bands). In fact, only six of my top 25 bands have been around for less than ten years. Nine have been around for between ten and twenty; seven for between twenty and thirty; and three for between thirty and forty. Can anyone recommend some awesome 'new' bands?

    2. Strapping Young Lad - 1995 (13 years)
    3. Iron Maiden - 1975 (33 years)
    4. Pantera - 1981 (27 years)
    5. Coheed and Cambria - 1995 (13 years)
    6. Devin Townsend - 1993 (15 years)
    7. The Fall of Troy - 2002 (6 years)
    8. Porcupine Tree - 1987 (21 years)
    9. Nine Inch Nails - 1988 (20 years)
    10. The Smashing Pumpkins - 1988 (20 years)
    11. Rush - 1968 (40 years)
    12. Metallica - 1981 (27 years)
    13. Judas Priest - 1970 (38 years)
    14. Alestorm - 2004 (4 years)
    15. Mastodon - 1999 (9 years)
    16. Megadeth - 1983 (25 years)
    17. Faith No More - 1982 (26 years)
    18. Incubus - 1991 (17 years)
    19. Dethklok - 2006 (2 years)

  • Defenders of the Faith 2008

    25 Abr 2008, 15:17

Thu 24 Apr – Metal Hammer Defenders of the Faith Tour

First time at the Barrowlands, I was pretty impressed.
We weren't too fussed about seeing 3 Inches of Blood so we decided to walk at a leisurely pace rather than run two miles to get there in time.
Arrived about halfway through DevilDriver's set. Sound was very good and Dez's vocals were excellent, not so sure about the rest of the band though.
After a gargantuan wait, surprisingly Opeth came on before Arch Enemy (guess they must be co-headlining and taking turn about). Mikael was on good form, his banter with the crowd was pretty funny and of course the band were incredibly tight. It was good to hear some of the oldies as opposed to loads of Ghost Reveries (although I would've loved Grand Conjuration).
After propping up the bar for fifteen-odd minutes, we dondered into the middle for Arch Enemy. Their set was pretty good although I'm not very familiar with them. Angela said something about "pissing razor blades", and (apparently) her recent contraction of the clap, which I thought was a strange thing to share with an audience with an average age of about 14. Daniel Erlandsson's drum solo was also quite impressive.

All in all, a good night.
