1. Nickel Creek (922)
I first heard Nickel Creek when my dad showed me the video to "I Should've Known Better". I thought it was ok, but decided not to persue them further. A few months later, I heard the same song again on someones iPod. I borrowed the first 2 albums off my dad, then bought the third one at the Cambridge Folk Festival 2006. That weekend I saw them twice :-D
First Song Heard: I Should've Known Better
Favourite Song: The Fox / Out Of The Woods
2. The Mars Volta (654)
I first heard The Mars Volta at the smoking area at Hills Road, whilst having a joint with my mates. I couldn't believe how different it was compared to a lot of other stuff I had heard. When in California on holiday, I bought Frances The Mute, followed shortly after by Scabdates and De-loused In The Comatorium. In November 2005 I saw them at the Birmingham Carling Academy. Thanks for the lift rV. Thanks for the ticket Josh.
First Song Heard: Drunkship Of Lanterns
Favourite Song: Drunkship Of Lanterns / Cicatriz ESP
3. Porcupine Tree (531)
I first heard Porcupine Tree in my mates bedroom, whilst trying to decide on what songs my band could cover. I loved it, quite generic, but amazingly written songs. On my 19th birthday, Laura copied me 4 of their albums (thank you) and we went to see them in December 2005 at the Junction in Cambridge.
First Song Heard: Wedding Nails
Favourite Song: Open Car
4. Alison Krauss (307)
I first heard Alison Krauss when my dad was playing her live DVD in the front room. I fell in love with her voice, but then forgot who it was for a few months. When I remembered the song and who it was by, I bought her "Forget About It" CD.
First Song Heard: Maybe
Favourite Song: Maybe / Ghost In This House
5. Sum 41 (248)
I first heard Sum 41 when I was going out with Ema. I hated it at the time, as I was in my Metallica phase. About a year ago I was rooting through some of mine and my brothers old CD's and thought I would give "All Killer No Filler" and "Does This Look Infected A Listen". It seemed so care-free and I loved the bouncyness of it. I have got many a slating for listenning to them by Laura and Josh.
First Song Heard: In Too Deep
Favourite Song: Motivation
5. The Third Eye (248)
I first saw The Third Eye at a party at the Blue Barn Recording Studio. They were a 2 piece then, and I hoped that one day I would be the bassist for them. My dream came true. We have played a handfull of gigs together and will hopefully go to the studio again soon.
First Song Heard: Transient Disputes
Favourite Song: Renew Those Wounds Father
7. Tool (244)
rV and Josh hassled me for ages to listen to Tool, they showed me a couple of tracks, but it didn't really appeal to me much. I didn't think about it any more until rV dropped off "Lateralus" and "10,000 Days" for me to listen to. I listenned to both of them in one sitting whilst on holiday and it all clicked, the technicality of the music.
First Song Heard: The Pot
Favourite Song: The Grudge / Parabola
8. Sikth (236)
I first discovered Sikth when I saw the video for How May I Help You? on MTV2. I loved the quirkyness and randomness of it. I then got a free track on a Metal Hammer CD and was hooked. As soon as it came out I bought "The Trees Are Dead And Dried Out, Wait For Something Wild" and shortly after, saw them at The Junction in Cambridge. I went to see them a second time in April 2006 at the Camden Barfly in London, and as soon as it came out, bought "Death Of A Dead Day".
First Song Heard: How May I Help You?
Favourite Song: Pussyfoot / Can't We All Dream?
9. Dream Theater (235)
rV showed me Dream Theater when I was 16. He gave me a copy of "Train Of Thought". The technical playing really appealed to me, and I loved it. In 2005 I bought "Scenes From A Memory", which is one of my favourite albums today.
First Song Heard: As I Am
Favourite Song: The Spirit Carries On / Solitary Shell
10. Pain Of Salvation (231)
Laura introduced me to Pain Of Salvation. She burnt me a CD with their best songs, and gave me a copy of Be. I love his voice, and would love to see them live. I'm still waiting for my copy of Entropia, Laura.
First Song Heard: Foreword!
Favourite Song: People Passing By
11. The Bays (211)
rV introduced me to The Bays. The fact that they never practice and all their recorded stuff (recorded from a live show) is inmprovised. I am yet to see them live, but when I do it will be amazing. I downloaded their "Big Chill 2005" set, shortly followed by their "Shambala" set.
First Song Heard: The Big Chill 1
Favourite Song: Shambala 2
12. Meshuggah (184)
Heavy-ass-shit. I first heard Meshuggah when my mate Raj sent me New Millenium Cyanide Christ. The amazing cross-rhythms and heavy vocals really drew me in. A little while later, I read the lyrics, and they are really well written, not like most metal lyrics. The similies and metaphors are quite something. Recently I bought "Catch Thirty-Three" and "Contradictions Collapse and None" Definitely a band that I want to see live. That would be intense.
First Song Heard: New Millenium Cyanide Christ
Favourite Song: Sum
13. CKY (110)
I first heard CKY whilst watching the CKY movies with my friends at school. CKY aren't really a band I'm crazy about, but I like the riffs and the vocals. The drumming is alright, but nothing special in my opinion. I saw them live in San Fransisco and then again 2 months later in Norwich in 2005.
First Song Heard: 96 Quite Bitter Beings
Favourite Song: Escape From Hellview
14. Robert Fripp (110)
I heard about the Robert Fripp soundscapesn from my dad a week before I saw Porcupine Tree at The Junction. He was supporting and when I actually saw him on stage I had never heard any of the music before. The things he does with one guitar are amazing. My dad has downloaded me a couple of his shows and bought a CD of a compilation of his soundscapes. I usually listen to him whilst going to sleep.
First Song Heard: unknown
Favourite Song: On My Mothers Birthday
15. Clor (109)
I first heard of this band when my mate Max joined. I saw a couple of their videos on MTV2 and then Reading festival 2005 came up. I saw them on the Carling Stage and it was a fantastic experience. Shortly after I bought their album, much to Max' delight. It is such a pity they broke up.
First Song Heard: Love & Pain
Favourite Song: Dangerzone
I'm not sure if all my links worked, but hopefully they did. Enjoy
